I learn best with TAB. That allows me to figure the repeated structures in the melodies. I REALLY struggle to figure things by looking at fingers and spoken TAB , so a downloadable PDF of the TAB of the lesson is essential. Rhythmic notation above or in the TAB would make a serious difference as well.
@@jeremyacton4569 Hi Jeremy, for the next videos I'll have a more zoom-in shot of the left hand/frets. Tabs at this point in time aren't in my plans but will make an announcement if they come out! I went slow step by step verbally in this video, hopefully this will be a good starting point. Thank you for your feedback!
Don Keller, congratulations man. That is the song is from my country, The Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩 was played by Luambo Franco. Love it my man.
Merci Mr Keller d'avoir Immortalisé ce géant de la musique rdcongolaise en particulier et africaine en général qui est le Grand Maître Franco Luambo Makiadi . Ceci prouve sans équivoque qu'il fut GRAND .
But singing it out and playing is the best way to learn to play by ear. Don't be lazy, learning by tutorial is ok to just confirm if Ur doing it right but it's not necessary if Ur serious about the music craft.
Love your playing, what a great surprise to find a tutorial! Soukous music is a ray of sunshine. Thank you for taking the time to make this and I hope there is more to come!
I’m not trying to be a bragger, but I was there at Melkweig,I am in the audience on that album, and Mario was an avalanche,it was an earthquake,I saw his fingers glide,to make that sound. It was a moment of angels. It was!!!
Hi Don - My guitar has been in the shop for the last month - watching this tutorial makes it harder to be apart.... To my knowledge no one else is posting tutorials from this era of West African music - I hope you continue.
Very nicely done, you explained everything clearly and will definitely stay tuned for the next instalment. Chapter markers also made it easy to navigate. Your playing is top notch Don!
tokoss!..more of these videos ..am a die hard congo rumba fan and am about to buy my first guitar...always enjoyed the videos...deeply..salaams all the way from kenya
hello Don thank you for this excellent work and I greet all the fans from all countries who follow you and love this fantastic music and the fantastic artists who created it. Well it's not an easy song and it took me several days well I'm French and the translation of the video is not obvious but it does it in full screen thank you very much. well the piece is in C - CFGF but with a very special rhythm of the chords for soukous thank you take care of you all !!
Thanks Don for resurfacing in a great fashion.Again much love from Kenya. You actually inspired me to buy a bass guitar cause I figured playing rhythm and lead guitar was beyond me but probably would manage the bass line for you.🙏
We need more tutorials like that. I would love to see you play others classics like Mamou, Parafifi or Tabu Ley’s classics like Mokolo nakokufa or Kelya. I hope you’ll be back ! Thank you for your amazing dedication
...I kept expecting Francos voice to kick in...!! Great work bro! Thank you for the lesson...still so so complicated for a newbie like me... but am inspired not to give up learning!!
Thanks Don for this installment. Was waiting for this for a long long time. I would like maybe an indication of the guitar playing level requirement that the tutorial is for : Beginner or Intermediate. This is awesome work Don.
I would classify this as "intermediate" to play it properly in time but that's just my opinion. The reason I don't classify this explicitly is that I don't want classifications to limit anyone's playing. I hope this helps. Thank you for your compliments!
Hi Don! Congratulations! You did it, the first tutorial approach😊 Sitting outside in the night with a beer, the kids are sleeping and I'm following your project. Good understandable explanations on the chords and the theory. Quick feedback, maybe a close up view of your left hand would be helpful. Keep it going! Pat from Germany, or beberu kichaa as I am known of in Tansania 😊
Muy buenooooo... Soy de Argentina. Se entiende la explicación... Pero la tablatura en el vídeo ayudaría muchísimo más. Te agradezco lo que compartis que nos ayuda a mejorar como guitarristas.
Great tutorial! Thanks. Keep 'em coming, please. I am certain that the pick up is on the and of 4, not 3. Had me really confused whilst laying down layers with a loop pedal, until I realised.
Bro, you took long to get started on these tutorials.. Good that you finally came round to it. We need a tutorial on Guitar Amp settings for both the Rhythm and Solo guitar for the general Soukous Sound, such as the Bokelo Sandoka cover you did.. Would not hurt also to know how you hold the pick and how you position it on the guitar body for the crisp and fast picking notes
Hi Sylvester, you can to a certain extent but it will be more work for the hands. The best thing without a capo is to slightly modify the playing so it's easier on the hands. Knowing the basic melody and rhythm and how it falls in place with the other parts is key. That's my two cents. If someone else has a better solution, I'm all ears :)
Much appreciation Don! I have a question. The rhythm guitar no.2 seems to be different than the part you are playing in your cover video from 2011. If you know that part will you teach it to us please? Also, Massu would be another great tutorial!
You're welcome. The 2011 version I did had a rhythm part that was my own. In the tutorial for this song, I wanted to be as close as I could to the original. I think a tutorial for Massu as well!
9:21 so the first pick up starts at low C. Are you saying the second rhythm is another octave higher (middle C)? Does not sound anything like yours on my piano. I know nothing about guitar and just learning piano
The first note should be C for both in this example. I believe we are thinking of the same part 9:31 that goes over the octave change. If it sounds off, feel free to reach me through my website: www.donaldkeller.com/contact
What did you like most about the tutorial? What would you like to see done differently?
Entertaining, helpful...but can we get a zoom in on the frets
@@nathannavachenja3513 Great feedback! I will do that for the next tutorial!

Reading through the comments, 40% are from Kenya, one would expect Congo to lead, but Kenya seems to have the most fans of Luambo
