As usual, fantastic lesson Johnny! I just wish I had seen this last week because I performed both Autumn Leaves AND Smile at church and I really could have used that diminished trick on both those tunes! (Especially on Smile, because that 4 bar long 1chord at the beginning needs alterations)
Suspended diminished was big in the 1930s. I hear it in movies a lot. I just think of it as chromatic neighbor tones. But I like suspended diminished, that works.
yow this lesson thought me a lot, ive been doing this techniques before but this is my very first time to discover the proper use thank u for this video
Love your content, subscribed! I'm a metal guitarist that needs this stuff for accents in my recordings. I took piano & music theory in high school in the late 90s so I should know this but I'm rusty! Thanks for what you do!!
i luv you u r the best at first i thought your stuff was too easy for Me genius that i thinl i am but i have been into dim chords since high school & never got this easy explanation or guideposts for using them i am all yours now.
Good Morning sir, i come across your lesson today but one thing i notice is that your too fast for me i don`t know about other but your good how can you help me out.
I am a bit confused - are you using everywhere own terms in the videos instead of the music theory terms? For example, you call it a diminished sus chord - but isn’t it a C Major Chord with the added 6th? This wouldn’t be a sus chord as sus4 is F not A? I might be afraid to learn terms that are named differently 🎵
Great point; there's no actual chord called a suspended diminished, but it can be arranged in a way to behave similarly to a sus chord. This post goes into full detail: pianowithjonny.com/piano-lessons/diminished-chords-5-essential-piano-techniques/
@ Emmanuel Markie Morris 3 diminished 7 chords on the piano. After you learn the notes in the C dim 7 chord, C sharp dim 7 chord, and D dim 7 chord, all the other diminished chords are inversions of those 3.
He meant there's only 3 dim7 chord finger patterns. Technically there are 12 dim7 chords per key, but 9 of them are just inversions of the first 3 of the scale in that key. You still call them whatever makes sense in the progression. Eg a Cdim7 and a Gdim7, harmonically same chord, what's the correct name? There isn't one except if the voicing or root note matters.

Very helpful thanks!
In section of Drop In Diminished, there's a progression C-Eb-Dm-G, mostly it is a C Am Dm G. So is Eb a tritone substitution right?
Great info Tha ks

Only 3 diminished chords?? I'm not clear in that part...

You're too young to play this beautiful. Beautiful
Wait…Pls, is it 3 diminished chord per scale(or octave)? Of it’s 3 diminished chords on the entire piano?
@ Emmanuel Markie Morris

If i play for example E G C, it could be a C Major on the second position but also it could be an E dim b13, to going in F Major for example.
Show👏👏👏❤
Don't build your house foundation out of these chords.
Meaning?
@@Charles.Wright appreciate ya for telling me.
😅
meaning... go back to the basic and root chords first and master them before applying these ones
@@shareekwillis2799 I think what he actually meant was they're "unstable", at least it seemed like he was making a music joke!
Please
I need more teaching sir please just reply to my message if you see it okay
