    Even with stock 1991 tires the 964 RS was lightning-quick for its time. In 1991 sport auto lapped the 964 RS on stock tires in 8.28 min, only 5 seconds slower than on modern Trofeo tires (as published in sport auto 11/1991). A 1991 964 Turbo 3.3 with 355 hp performance package (WLS) with the same driver was 5 seconds slower around the Ring (8.33 min).

    Unless you see 911’s on a regular basis you don’t realize how much larger the newer 991 and 992 are than the 964/993 and older 911’s. The 993 was the last 911 based on the G platform and from there the 911 just started to grow in size and weight. The 996 and 997 aren’t as big as the 992 but still a bit larger than the original 911’s. I can’t imagine the 911 getting much bigger. I hope it doesn’t.

      Du behauptest ziemlichen Käse... "Wie wenig sich eigentlich am Auto verbessert hat"... Es hat sich gewaltig was bei Porsches Fahrwerkstechnik, Motoren, Bremsen über diesen langen Zeitraum verändert. Aber natürlich erscheint das durch den Fortschritt bei den Reifen etwas weniger dramatisch. Es ist ein Zusammenspiel mehrerer Faktoren, wobei die Reifen herausstechen. Aber hier zu behaupten, dass der gesamte Fortschritt bei der Rundenzeit nur den Reifen zu verdanken ist, ist einfach nur bullshit!

    I have looked this now a few times and I always get the feeling he is trying harder with the 992. Notice that he does not seem to use heel and toe with the 964 which I believe means several compromised entrances. There are actually couple of corners where he seems to feather close the clutch. I think he can take 5 to 10 seconds off from the 964 time - quite easily whereas the 992 is probably quite there. I also believe that the newer tyres boost the confidence with the 992.

    • @tfrowland
      @tfrowland 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      G B Did you drive the RS variant or just the regular 964? A ‘race car’ ie a ‘race-focussed car’ will be set up with minimal luxury and thus weight, be optimised for feel over comfort, and not flatter your driving. In this regard a regular Chiron is not a “race car” despite being faster than virtually everything else. Of course a 992 is going to be faster, it’s 30 years of dev later. Also, everyone says this but a GT is not a soft sports car - it is specifically designed for touring. Many manufacturers make softer, consumer oriented versions of their cars and call them GTs when they simply aren’t, because it sounds better than ‘Soft Sport’.

      @@KosmicHRTRacingTeam I think Christian Gebhardt is the one who could really tell us whether it's needed or not on this car, but I personally believe he could have gone even faster by applying the heel-and-toe downshifting technique. Maybe he was just not comfortable with the driving position and pedal setup. (He seems a little cramped in there...)

    Yes my first Porsche, a used 964 Carrera 4, when hesitating with a Boxster, the seller explained me that the Boxster is easier and the 964 was a complicated MILF...
    I am excited to get challenged, the 964 Carrera 4 challenged me more than a Boxster. (the Boxster is a great car, easier to pilot, who forgives many errors)
