These arent poor man recipes but are DINNER ! I eat similar meals and never feel poor. Good video sweet little taste testers. One thing folks need to keep in mind is that nutrition is a daily thing. So, if, a person does not get a full 3-4 ounces of protein in one meal, snacks of peanut butter, cheese, eggs for breakfast etc ensure they get their daily allowance. I didnt see anyone complain in the comments but people often do say things such as 1 pound of meat for 6 people ? Yup, add in cheese, beans and this meal has a whole lot of protein 😊
My mom and grandmother grew up poor and my mom always saved some gravy after making stew to eat over bread. Today i do the same thing so the extra doesn't go to waste. My grandmother would always wipe the inside of a salad bowl with a piece of bread to soak up the dressing and bits of veggies left in the sides and bottom and eat the moistened bread . Yummy !
Glad to see that you use your bacon grease! That’s what I’ve done all the 43 years I’ve been married ! Especially in green beans and pinto beans , it makes them so delicious! Save your bacon grease and use it on anything that you think it would be good in and you’ll Thank me later I’m sure of it! Happy cooking! Blessings!💕
If you don't mind a suggestion from an old lady when I use cream of whatever I fill the sink with hot tap water and sit the can down in it for about 10 minutes I will turn the can over after 5 minutes it makes it easier to pour out
Not to be critical- do you know how expensive hot water is? Do you really need to fill the entire sink? Hot water is precious. How about use a rubber scraper? That would be a better “poor man” tip.
Budget friendly tip for chili, use barley instead of beef, the beans & barley make a perfect protein & the barley takes on the flavor of the chili. And you can always add beef broth instead of water for a beefier taste. My husband never knows the difference.
Hello, just wanted to tell you about the paper towel trick. Throw one inside your ground beef, and wiggle it around so it will absorb all the grease. That way you won't have to dirty up your colander. 🙂
I can no longer afford ground beef, I use the ground turkey fiesta brand from Walmart, 1/2 pound of turkey and 1 cup of cooked lentils on beef bullion cube. Lately due to the prices continuing to go up, we are going no meat meals. We buy the chili beans in the really big cans it's cheaper per ounce we eat on it for days then freeze the rest.
Do you have any discount grocery stores in your area? We have several that get the groceries super cheap for damaged crates etc and they sell the groceries at fantastic prices-- I don't know if they are available in other areas. I live in Arkansas.
I feel your pain, my love. 🙏🖤 Im the only one that cooks in my fam, yet I'm on disability. I often have to find a chair. They're all, "what's for dinner?!" (ages 31 - 73...😔) NOT CHILDREN. 😡🙄
For them to be poor man's meals they do look pretty good. I just saw your videos for the first time and i love the name of this video, I Have a lot of poor man meals that are better than meals that cost a fortune, I'm not a person with a lot of money myself and I think this helps everyone. Thank you for sharing.
They remind me of Southern Frugal Momma. She has to drag her kids in to taste test and the young one rolllng his eyes and falling over - stupid. Kid testing videos turn me off.
One of our favorite easy dinners is beef & taters...we call it "hamburger hash". I don't add corn; I stir in a good squeeze of ketchup and a splash of water. Sometimes, I skip the ketchup and water and just add a can of pork & beans with their sauce. I have prepared most of the meals you shared during my 40+ years of married life, even when money wasn't tight. I consider this "good country cookin'"...the fact that it's budget friendly is just an added blessing!
I grew up with & love S.O.S.! The only wet ingredient we use is milk. Then salt & pepper it up. Then eat it on toast. Sooooo Yummy!!! One of my all time favorite meals!
This might be the best "poor man's" mix of recipies Ive ever seen. Good variety that everyone from my family would love! And thank you SO MUCH for the further links and descriptions !!! ❤❤❤
I get a whole pork loin ground up and use it in chili, meatloaf, tacos... much cheaper than beef, and more flavor. Usually less than 2.00 a pound. You cant buy bologna that cheap.😊
Hello. Thank you for the ideas. I noticed that you make a lot of dishes with round beef, pasta and tomato products. Have you considered meatloaf or meatballs with a white sauce? Or maybe a curry with coconut milk. Hamburger with a variety of topping choices is another different option. This will give your babies a variety of different things to eat. Ground bulgogi is another ground beef meal. Just some ideas. Keep up the good job feeding your family!
I’ve been making chili Mac for 30 years. I use a can of Nellie’s jalapeño chili and a box of Kraft Mac n cheese, then add about 1/2 cup shredded cheese. My family love it

Try that hamburger gravy with mash potatoes, so delicious! If you don't have soup, another poor man way to make that is instead of soup, put your milk in and salt & pepper, delicious.
I made Shepard pie tonight. I chopped up some mushrooms and red onion and sautéed it then added some shredded carrots. Once soft i removes it from the pan. Then i used ground beef and cooked it up. Seasoned it and drained off the grease. Not ALL of the grease but most of it. Then i added 2 tsp of beef bouillon. The better than bouillon beef flavoring. Let that cook for a min then added a few tbs of flour and let it cook off and added about a cup of water. Let it cook. Add back the veg. Cook for a few min then added to my casserole dish. Added corn to the top of the meat/veg mix. Homemade mash taters on top...so good. I also make a healthier version using ground chicken/turkey. Cook the ground meta. Set aside. Cook up mushrooms, onions and garlic. Once soft, add some frozen peas...add ground meat to casserole dish then mushroom/onion mix. Add mashed sweet potatoes on tops cook for like ten mins in oven. SO. GOOD. And a bit healthier.
one of my favorite meals is: 1 box spanish rice made following directions on box. Brown 1 pound ground beef with diced onions. when both are done combine. So good and fairly cheap.

I remember as a kid we often had breakfast for supper, waffles and eggs, sausage, or sausage gravy with biscuits. I miss those days. It's an affordable dinner, that's for sure. I love seeing your precious children, they are so well-behaved and adorable.
It's great to hear so many home cooked meals. I grew up with tight means as well. But I'm wondering why there's hardly ever any fresh produce served. Fruits and veggies are literally the most cost effective and healthiest foods and are an endless variety of meals options. Not to be negative but meat is normally a luxury for a lot of people who are budget conscious.
These days poor men can't afford ground beef by the pound after pound. One once of ground beef is an adult serving for a sunday dinner treat. :( 36:34 The pan grinning at me just made me laugh. Corndog casserole - fry onions and thin sliced hotdogs till browned in places, mix into jiffy cornbread mix made with egg and a can creamed corn, bake in a cake pan. The corn and onions give it tons of flavor and the sweetness a of corndog.
This video reminds me so much of my childhood and how my own Mom cooked. And the meals that we grew up on. What a great video. - Hudson James Co-Host of "Stories Round the Table with Hudson & Joni"
Im from an older generation, and southern. I was taught SOS was a creamy chipped beef gravy served on toast. Your SOS looks more like stroganoff sauce to me, especially since your using cream of mushroom soup. Next time try it with some egg noodles it will deffo will be super yummy and filling/
Great ideas! I make my own breakfast sausage all the time now because it's so much cheaper to buy a pork roast or pork loin (usually $.99 cents a pound) and make it than it is to buy it or hamburger in the store. I make my own hamburger too when we can find beef on sale. (usually it's cheaper to find a piece of beef or a roast and make your own, plus you know what's going into it). I just finished radiation treatments (30 of them) and knew I would be exhausted and not feel like cooking towards the end. I am so thankful we bought a pressure canner last year for our garden, and just before radiation started, I made a huge batch of chili in the instant pot, then canned what we didn't eat that night! I tell you, it's been a lifesaver to just be able to grab a quart of chili and add some macaroni, or add the chili to baked potatoes or hot dogs/bratwurst, add Frito's, cheese and onions for Frito Pie, etc. It's one of the most versatile meals I make! I'll never go back to cooking for one day at a time when I can can everything and not have to work to eat! LOL

36:34 The pan grinning at me just made me laugh.
Corndog casserole - fry onions and thin sliced hotdogs till browned in places, mix into jiffy cornbread mix made with egg and a can creamed corn, bake in a cake pan. The corn and onions give it tons of flavor and the sweetness a of corndog.
Your "spaghetti egg drop soup" looks intriguing... have to try it. Your other recipes are tasty looking as well. 😊
I grew up with most of these meals off grid living in Northern Michigan thanks for the video
This video reminds me so much of my childhood and how my own Mom cooked. And the meals that we grew up on. What a great video. - Hudson James Co-Host of "Stories Round the Table with Hudson & Joni"
wow i am starving now! great ideas
Im from an older generation, and southern. I was taught SOS was a creamy chipped beef gravy served on toast. Your SOS looks more like stroganoff sauce to me, especially since your using cream of mushroom soup. Next time try it with some egg noodles it will deffo will be super yummy and filling/
My SOS is also chipped beef over toast, but I'm from Ohio
Yes,that’s how I make it…must be from Pa?
Thankyou ! I have never thought to add cream cheese ! Your little fam is adorable !!!! It must be a favorite comfort meal im sure 🙂
Irecommend toasting great for beef & cream of mushroom soup.
Pure SOS is made with chipped fried beef. Yum
I think this should be called 1 month of yummy! 🤤
LOL
