It’s lovely to see how you’ve moulded yourself into the Icelandic lifestyle. I’ve followed your videos since you were not long in Iceland so it’s wonderful that you’re so settled and now Mamma to an Icelandic baby! You are glowing these days and clearly love your new life. Motherhood is a special thing and agrees with you well! Having bumped into you in the EasyJet queue I can vouch for how quickly you can get home by plane. We must come back sometime it’s a place that gets into your soul and I can see why Iceland inspires so many creative people. Keep up the good work. 👍😀
Hi Carole!! Yes, I remember meeting you. Thank you for sticking around and watching our life grow. Mia is an absolute delight, exhausting but so worth it. I'm loving Mum-life.
There are benefits being a Scot in Iceland: The mentality is eerily similar (I spent a year working in Aberdeen and had the same feeling). A definite plus: Flying between Iceland and Scotland only takes a bit over 2 hours!
...and this coming from a Scot! A Highland Scot would be hard pushed to spot the difference, let alone the difference in mentality. I spent almost a year working in Aberdeen, Scotland, and it felt VERY familiar. Scots and Icelanders are definitely more alike than the Scots and the Sassenach...
I stayed in Reykyavik, marvellous country like off-planet out of this world for nature, turf houses, black n white beach in the south silver foamy waves on the ebony sands so surreal and the landscape of moss and lichen, warm snug buildings indoors modern and minimalist. Slow chilled pace of life. Ultra safe, I wandered on my own at night. And in the capital city and sparsely populated, quiet, peaceful. It was February and after dusk it got dark very slowly. I loved everything about it.
What a writer! Ebony sands, moss and lichen landscape, warm and snug, modern and minimalist and in February after dusk, it darkens slowly. Lovely Jeanne7774. TY!
So many things to love there! I do love the heating, the 2 times I stayed in Hella and Reykjavik, I slept with the window opened (top), love Scandinavian ANYTHING, love the lamb, skyr & licorice, loved the slower paced life, quietness, beauty of outdoors, well I'm ready to move!
We visited a few years ago for New Years Eve which was an experience! We remarked how orderly everyone was. We never saw a policeman or fireman. We were thinking if this was back home in NYC, there would be policemen on every corner. Even walking back to our hotel late at night, we never felt unsafe. Hope to visit again !
Yes, this is a very good point. There is a distinct lack of Police on the street which reflects my point, there's just not a need for it. I have heard that there is even a 'waiting list' for prison here, so basically you go on parol first and if you prove that you have reformed, then you don't need to go on. Crazy huh!? Hope you do get to revisit.
Icelandic New Years Eve and ORDERLY in the same sentence? At any other time if year this might apply, but on New Years Eve we simply go bonkers with fireworks, alcohol and (if conscious at all) sex. I am certainly glad you had a feel-safe experience.
Very good things. I was there a couple of years ago. Agree, Icelandic lamb rocks!!! I love lamb anyway but when I tasted the Icelandic, it blew me away. Also fresh seafood, Plokkfishkur was another win with me. The restaurant food I ate was all exquisite. I would have thought they would import frozen vegetables since they are frozen immediately after picking.
A great list. So many of things I appreciated when I was there. I truly felt at peace, comfortable, safe and happy there. The environment really does foster an inherent practicality and minimal approach to life I thought. Every day should start with skyr!!! I loved the geothermal towel rack in the bathroom we had that helped warm and dry the wet clothes after exploring and would love one for my Canadian home as we are no strangers to harsh winter weather where I live. We see the Aurora Borealis from my home every now and then. I am interested to hear your dislikes...the wind, maybe?!
oh, you know it too well!! My day often starts with skyr though we don't have a heated towel rack but that would be great. Stay tuned, I am sharing my dislikes on Thursday
Funny, I love how Icelandic sounds. Yes, so hard for English speakers to pronounce! 🤦🏾♀️ I was last in Iceland exactly 2 years ago, and I’m quite sure if I went in my 20’s when I was 1st invited, I would have ended up with my own Viking. Hehe! I’m from N California, and I find Iceland more sincerely chilled. There are so many artistic people, and people spend time talking to you...so nice to be there! The food is just the best! Such a great place!
It's fun to think of how our lives would have turned out if on a different path but I think we have a path in the stars so maybe you will come back to our chilled out island. I love how Icelandic sounds but I obviously don't make it sound as good when I try to speak!!
Sonia Nicolson I totally understood what you meant. Hehe! You probably have a bit of an advantage over an American. Our pronunciation is so flat. Seems Scottish is a pinch closer. A tiny pinch. 😉
The cleanliness!!! The cleanest country I have ever been to. Also, as far as clothes go. When I bought my wool coat, the woman who sold it to me said… there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. She was right. I still have it and it is lightweight, waterproof and warm.
hi sonia, just came across your channel....i think id LOVE to live in iceland...im sooo into the simple life and nature...i actually watched your what you hate about it first....im just wondering about what work you can do? get? and what you have to do to be able to stay/live there ....thanks for video...Love your accent....love scotland....its beautiful.. :) x
I had about the same initial reaction to the Northern Lights when seeing them in Alaska for the first time.

I love the volcanos there.
If you can do your job just about anywhere, what compelled you to try to live in Iceland--an obscure, far-away place?
