They wanted to keep a gas turbine engine tank in thier tank fleet due to gas turbine engines being better than diesel engines in some situations so the russian military would have the choice to choose a gas turbine engine tank in situations where they need it So the development went from trying to replace the gas turbine engine with a diesel engine to trying to make a better and less fuel consuming gas turbine engine Which they kinda achieved so the turbine engine you see in t-80 russian tanks doesn't work like the one in abrmas, the one in t-80 consume way less fuel (but still somewhat high compared to the diesel engines )and have less heat signature while working But the abrmas is way faster but the tank speed is handicapped by the manufacture
