Honestly, I think Carlsen has made a very kind gesture. He has fought countless battles with Nepo, winning them all, and this time he wanted to offer him a small consolation after Nepo lost two World Championships (unfairly against Ding, in my opinion) and the last Candidates Tournament in the final game in a very cruel way. I think it's fine. I know people like relentless, bloodthirsty competition, but this shows humanity. Next time Armaggedon. Happy new year!!
Nepo should have declined the offer. This was the time to test Magnus and a chance to become a real WC. Even now he can not claim he is better than Magnus...

They should be sharing 2nd place, since neither player beat the other. Good job FIDE aren't running football, France and Argentina might have agreed to share the World Cup after 120 minutes.
I'm often defending Magnus but this time it's more of his fault rather than FIDE. FIDE should have refused, but of course they can't refuse anything to Magnus now. We saw it and we see it again, even when Magnus is clearly the one bringing trouble, people defend him blindly.
Sorry FIDE, don't like having 2 winners in such a tournament. Is not happening in tennis, football, or any chess event in the past. Very disappointing.
Exactly, FIDE has become Magnus' puppet as they can't do anything against him, else all the fanboys will cry. Live boards are never working, like DGT is a ghost society not doing anything to improve them. I want to say that a change at FIDE is needed, but Magnus and the fans are also working hard to make things worse. This event showed that we are going nowhere, no powerful entity can make good decisions for chess
Disagree. Fide had ridiculous rules to begin with and Magnus just did what anyone would do because others could have jeans so why couldn't he? And this format could have been going on forever and its New Years Eve. What were they thinking? Fide must have realized they are terrible and had to make up for their mistakes. That's what I see here.
@@mychannel11231 haha driven by passion As someone who played for 20 years including in those events, but also organized tournaments and was arbiter, I couldn't resist responding to comments on this topic
Magnus basically exploited every failure of Fide rules and management this tournament.... its almost as if he wanted to display their incompetence to the world.😂
He asked to change the rules for him and because everyone side with him blindly, FIDE knows they can't refuse him anything. The rules were clear on this topic, they must continue playing. He literaly scored an own goal. Even though I already knew from the start (and many many years) that FIDE had many incompetent people, he showed that he is a problem as well.
@gredax if FIDE would have put reasonable dress code in place with reasonable penalties from the beginning... then also having an Armageddon plan after so many draws... none of the chaos would have happened. We would only be talking about the failure of the electronic chess boards and the fact that Naroditsky (and probably Dubov) should have had a chance to battle out for a spot in the final bracket.
So, maybe she should play in the open next one. Oh, wait, she wouldn't even make 6 points in the Swiss, let alone qualify in the top 8 and play in the knockouts, reaching the final.
@bigjohnny1985That doesn't matter, We are discussing player's integrity and respect for the games/competition.. Being best at something doesn't make you Above the rules God..
@percyweasley9301 Magnus has tons of integrity and he hasn't broken any rules. He entered into an agreement with his opponent after 3 sudden death draws, which was acceptable to FIDE. But that's all besides the point. if Wenjun is tired of seeing Magnus and Nepo at the top, she should get better at the game.
I'm very happy about the shared 1st place. Only other solution would have been to pause the competition and try again later on when the competitors manged to rest up.
To say let's share it because we are tired, cmon, that's absolutely ridiculous. Magnus for 15 years speezes games until the opponent gets tired and makes a mistake. That's absolutely what the Game is about and what gave him so many wins. No, this is a bs decision and he knows it. He ran away from the fear of losing and it's understandable. He ran away from possibly being no world champion any more after he had it already in the pocket. He clamped on his Last title and used his powers to make an absolute nonsense decision. This time, he hadn't the power anymore to tell the truth in the press conference but was trying to sell this ridiculous argument of being tired. Marathon runners are tired when they come in. Sometimes they can't even finish for exhaustion. These guys are nowhere near being so tired to not play another 10 games.
In Marathon, the finish line is clear. In this blitz tournament, since there is no Armageddon/sudden death, so basically there is no clear finish line. It is possible that both players can draw the games endlessly. Blame on the tournament format, not the players.
They were never going to play forever. It's a blitz game. There are 2-3 big swings per game. And Magnus almost flagged in the last 2 games. If they were tired they should have adjourned the competition and continued it tomorrow. But mental exhaustion is the reason they become champions. The very thing that decides 90% of chess games? What a joke.
Guaranteed I am higher elo than you regards and I'm very okay with this decisions. Let them hang out with their friends for the New Year. Terrible scheduling by FIDE (per usual).
Imagine being so dumb to think they aren't mentally tired only physically. But then again as you are not playing at their level this reply is expected.

Congrats to Magnus and Ian!❣️
I'm happy for Ian even though I'm a Magnus fan, Ian deserves to have a world championship. Also this is a good thing for chess because now they will learn from this when they make the format and we will never have this situation again. This reminds me of what happened in the Olympics when two men shared the gold.
Me too
It wasn't even allowed In the rules so how could they even learn from that
There was no mandatory Armageddon... So they said, f that, I want this to be over, let's just share the medal and go home
@@thecoldestcoldcaller5762He's won the candidates more times, for one. And in this specific tournament Fabiano wasn't in the final? So that's the big one for being a co champion for the 2024 title.
Exactly
What about Lei Tingjei? Is this how FIDE treats women in chess, only men get to be double world champions??
They ask they get ,if ju and lei asked they can be also
The tired excuse is so pathetic. Ju Wenjun was also tired but she had to battle through it. She is more of a man than these snowflakes.
dont go that way, please
She also won in 6 games, whereas Magnus and Nepo would have played at least 8. Also, tired is the political answer. The real reason is a power play by Magnus so that FIDE will reintroduce armeggeddon in future tournaments.
pathetic take, winning is not everything

Feeling sorry for Ju Wenjun, be so much ignored while being sole champion!
Women champion
I don't feel a thing. Don't know the names of any female chess player, other than the Polgar sisters. Let the women play the guys, if you care to give them more PR.
not much of a championship when the finalists wont play a tiebreaker.....
They played 3 of them actually.
I WANT TO REMIND THE FACT THAT ANATOLY KARPOV AND GARRY KASPAROV DID NOT PLAY ARMAGEDDON MATCH IN SOVIET CHAMPIONSHIP 1988, THEY WERE WITH SAME AMOUNT OF POINTS AND SHARED THE TITLE OF USSR CHAMPION. SO THIS IS NOT A PRECEDENT.
Back in the USSR, you don't know how lucky you are!
@thecoldestcoldcaller5762 I just stated a fact, i don't understand are you ironic or not, but the debate is not in political terms, but only in chess terms.
@@marintanev1675 Reference to a Beatles song. You are too young.
But they didn’t change the rules in the final, during the event!
@@macleadg Actually, according to the rules, they had to play, but they refused, even Karpov was paired with white.
Magnus never fails to boasts about how he is head and shoulders above rest of the group in blitz and I do agree he is, can't counter that. But then why would he chicken out after couple of loses and few draws? If you are really the best and significanly stronger than Ian then why not just beat him? it felt like he chickened out against Nepo and asked for the shared first (being too tired and too nervous cant be an excuse). Very unlike the Magnus we are used to seeing. I have a feeling he will continue to become more and more of a diva as the gap between him and rest of the field diminishes.
He ain't on board on Fide for a very long time. He saw this breach of not being imposed an Armageddon so he just went with it to create more drama and impose an even worse image on Fide. He kinda seems to want his own federation or maybe just be the director there
If that's the case, Ian could refuse Magnus offer to share the title. The same thing players can refuse to draw offers from their opponents.
@@joaochanoca3317 contrary to what a lot of people think, this is not a breach. Think of it like football penalty shootout. Blitz are often decisive and quick to play, it can't last endlessly

Plot Twist: FIDE allowed the co-champion to make Magnus looks bad as privileged arrogant player after the whole Jeans Gambit as a retaliation

True. 2 champions is bonkers.
I mean players are just as much to blame for agreeing to draw
Magnus>FIDE
We found out that FIDE is:
(1) Stupid [Jeans issue]
(2) Spineless [shared title]
dont cry when fide lets magnus bend the rules today when you were crying about fide asking magnus to follow the rules yesterday.
@@BakedTomato123stupid the jeans didnt matter, the world champion title does
@@BakedTomato123 FIDE is more than capable of being both stupid & spineless.
Making a player sit out a round instead of just giving him a hefty fine for refusal is silly. Obviously if the attire was distracting, he should've been kicked out on the spot, which wasn't the case here.
To agree to a tie is spineless & I'll happily maintain that.
@@diavolodiablo205 It's not about the attire being distracting it's about what's in the rules that everyone has agreed to follow, or if you don't want to follow just change them by advocating but don't play the games under those rules then break them, the rules were always there and he could just not join the tournament and make a statement saying he wont play until the fide changes the jeans rules if its about his "principles", instead of playing tyrant and join the game with rules everyone is supposed to follow and ask the tournament to bend them literally just for him during the event, and the public reaction? Dem rules are stoopid Magnus is cool f the rules f the establishment. FIDE was already fighting an uphill battle when it comes to the most powerful player demanding to be special, when the entire public mob turns on them at the same time for simply enforcing a dress code rule(made by a player committee btw) evryone agreed to in the contracts entering the tournament, you wonder why they go well f it you want a king you can have him.
Kasparov and Fisher were right…
Huge congrats to Ju, Magnus, and Nepo. A wonderful and moving outcome in the open section, especially given the specific history between Magnus and Nepo.

@@dimasfaiz236so what, at least play an Armageddon match.
Am sure Ju Wenjun would've loved to share the championship with her best friend but like a true champ she understood that she needed to grow a pair and fight until she won. Then these two disrespect her achievement right after🚮. Fide be better this is a huge L on your part.
Ian and Magnus are holding hands under the table... So cute! 😊
@@Electronite1978 because he's not and why do you think if he won a Blitz proves he's better than Carlsen when Carlsen has 5 WCC, 5 World Rapid, 7 World Blitz prior to that!
And Nepo would have gotten the black pieces and Carlsen would get why pieces. Why risk it?
They should be sharing 2nd place, since neither player beat the other. Good job FIDE aren't running football, France and Argentina might have agreed to share the World Cup after 120 minutes.
A more accurate football analogue would be "agreed to share the world cup after 500 minutes of both teams scoring all penalties".
Then write the Armageddon rules before the game starts, it's FIDE own fault
Should just be "two people advanced to the final, and that's the end of the tournament"

It did happen in chess Sinquefield Cup 2018 where there were 3 players as co-champions. It also happened in the Olympics in high jumping event.

This is terrible. FIDE is a puppet. Magnus runs FIDE, apparently. And the live boards were terrible. This event was an embarrassment.
Exactly, FIDE has become Magnus' puppet as they can't do anything against him, else all the fanboys will cry.
Live boards are never working, like DGT is a ghost society not doing anything to improve them.

Disagree. Fide had ridiculous rules to begin with and Magnus just did what anyone would do because others could have jeans so why couldn't he? Poor Magnus...i'm tired and nervous....i dont want to play anymore!!!! Fide...Ok no problem...whatever you want your majesty.
Magnus basically exploited every failure of Fide rules and management this tournament.... its almost as if he wanted to display their incompetence to the world.😂
all he displayed was he gets exactly what he wants and fide bends the knee
14:15 Wenjun so over this circus
So, maybe she should play in the open next one. Oh, wait, she wouldn't even make 6 points in the Swiss, let alone qualify in the top 8 and play in the knockouts, reaching the final.

@bigjohnny1985That doesn't matter, We are discussing player's integrity and respect for the games/competition.. Being best at something doesn't make you Above the rules God..
@bigjohnny1985She's great chess player, You should see her games..
Great sportsmanship by Ju. However Ian lost his great chance for glory by agreeing to be a joint winner.

I think this match is fixated. Both Magnus and Ian wants to prove something that FIDE rules are all stupid
The real winners in the Open section are the two medallists not sitting here and who did not say they would force 5 move draws if FIDE didn’t agree to bend the rules for them, ones they knew of before the event began
Ju Wenjun has been treated this poorly before. Its not acceptable! She is only real World Blitz champion this year.
This moderator should be reprimanded for not having more questions for Ju. If FIDE wants to promote women’s chess then they should act like they actually want to do so.
Congrats to Ju Wenjun for her great achievement on getting the world crown (even Magnus was paying attention to a couple of her games) and for having endured all of this deal with good composure and dignity even when she was a bit left aside by the conference handler.
