I don't see why weight is a problem for the MPC XL.
It's built for the studio, so you place it on your desk and you leave it there.
If it's heavy, it will not "dance around the table" when you are using it.
What is a problem though, is the fact that the software is still missing song wide clips (as it is called on the Maschine software).
For studio use, that is a must.
So I hope that the 3.0 version will add that functionality.

I agree but parts cost less and are smaller and lighter so for any company it's a selling point like "we're lighter and stronger than before".

Your explanation of the RAM along with all of the technical info was really straightforward language. I’m still diving in on my MV. Should I go solid state with its storage? I still need to upgrade my MPC2kXL for TF/SD cards. I am reluctant to do since I need my floppies to load my material. 2023 I’m using 3.5” floppies on mpc?! Should I be embarrassed? These days, most younger kiddies find it a magical to ‘watch’ floppies spin and load files into an mpc. They’ll answer “a what-?” When I ask if they ever had a VCR!! Then I immediately show them the line in with its RCA phonos and tell them It’s how you get the samples onto the MPC! “Oh, THATS why they put samples of movies on songs!” they’ll say. I think I might just pass on the XL, in case I find a way to upgrade my files to SD card in the meantime. THANKS FOR THE SOLID PRESENTATION!!

I hope Akai put at least 8 individual analog outputs on the proposed MPC XL for a total of at least 10 like what the previous generation MPCs had. The addition of some digital I/O options such as ADAT would also be welcome. As far as MPC 3.0 goes, there are some workflow features from the previous MPCs that were neglected and left out of the current ones. Here's a feature request list I put together a while back.
      ---------------
      Feature Requests:
These new MPC 2.11 features are wonderful and welcome additions. However, I just hope Akai makes some simple usability and workflow improvements to these new MPCs and include features from the old ones (1000, 2500, 4000) that were left out of the new MPCs (One, Live, X).
      Examples of such features include:
      1. Selecting a note/pad or keygroup to edit by pressing a midi note from an external keyboard while in program edit. The MPC Key 61 does this with it's internal keyboard. The ability for all other MPCs to respond from a midi keyboard would be wonderful.
      2. The ability to copy a keygroup while in program edit when editing keygroups.
      3. The ability to copy/paste names while in the naming screen.
      4. The ability to switch the time display between (beats and bar counter) and (minutes, seconds, and frames or tenths of a second).
      5. The ability to input a fixed numerical value for all selected midi notes (or for all notes on a specific track) when editing note velocity for a selected group of previously recorded midi note events or all midi notes on a specific track (There’s a dedicated window for that feature in the MPC1000, 2500, and 4000).
      6. The ability for the MPC to remember the last assigned midi port, midi channel, bank select, and program change values (from the previous midi track) and pick up from there when creating a new midi track. This would save a lot of time when composing while using sounds from external midi gear.
      7. The ability to copy all sequence parameters of the current sequence (without the recorded midi event data) into a new sequence to use as a template for the new sequence.
These are all workflow-related features that exist in older MPCs, such as my MPC2500 and 4000. They save time and make the machines much easier to use. Perhaps I should find a way to submit these "feature requests" to Akai to be implemented in a future update.
I will also add these last four to the list:
      8. When double tapping on ANY field containing a numerical value on the MAIN SCREEN, display the virtual numeric keypad to allow the user to directly input a specific value instead of a pop-up list that forces the user to scroll to find a value.
      9. USB Multichannel/multitrack audio streaming.
      10. Anything that can be done to the software to improve/optimize the tightness of the timing and performance of the MPC sequencer (including when slave syncing to other midi devices and especially when slave syncing to a DAW) will be most welcoming.
      11. A screensaver mode menu option for the LCD screen to go completely dark and shut itself off while idle until it wakes up (just like the qlink OLEDs on the MPC X). This would tremendously extend the life of the LCD display and backlight.

I'm not bothered by the current weight of the X. If they cut 2lbs off that unit, to me, that signifies that the rigidity/thickness/integrity of the materials goes down, making the new unit more flimsy. If someone has a problem with a 12 lb instrument that sits on a table, they need to go to the gym lol.
You brought up a great point about the 32 bit floating point eating up memory. It makes a strong case for having WAY more RAM - like 16GB - because it's like having 8GB in practice compared to old school hardware samplers. Add in the fact that the OS has to run on the same RAM and tbh even 4GB doesn't sound like enough. No wonder the RAM gets so quickly maxed when you load a piano or a few Fabric XL presets... It needs to be closer or at least expandable to current laptop specs. Or... at least enable disk streaming like the Kronos has had since 2011. Also, the Kronos originally shipped with a 32GB SSD, with an option to add a 2nd one.

    • @_EightySix
      @_EightySix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SampleKingsVideos Nah, it's the metal chassis that makes it heavy. Electrical components haven't gotten that much lighter in 6 years.. The X having weight to it is reassuring, and it's not meant to be mobile. I'd prefer an MPC XL to be similar in shape and weight to the X, just upgraded internals.

I like my MPC flagship big and heavy. I have the Mpc 3000 and Mpc 4000. Had the X for a week and sold it felt flimsy like a toy and my computer had better software. Akai is missing a huge opportunity - they already have units for the masses bed room studio back pack guys. Make a serious machine for the ultimate level and don’t cut corners they will come

@@SampleKingsVideos true for portability reasons i get it makes sense, but for a centre piece of a studio set up i usually prefer "heft" and "sturdy" - I almost felt like the X was like an ipad attached to a pad controller it really didnt give me an MPC experience. Yes its a very capable machine -but i just felt like the software was inferior from an intuitive perspective to most DAWS which i can live with as most MPC's are like that but it misses the immediacy of the whole MPC work flow in my humble 2 cents - i was jumping around all kinds of menus to find things. which is why i still pull up my MPC 3000 in 2023

It would be wild if they don't put in a laptop sized DDR4 or DDR5 Ram slot in their new line of MPC's so they could be upgraded like the older MPC's. I feel like that should be required, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that they will not be including that, which would be so great.

    • @SampleKingsVideos
      @SampleKingsVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I suspected that much. So unfortunate too. My love OG still gets used well and its all I need and want in terms of hardware, looking forward to what they'll bring with future updates, but I feel they'll more than likely cut update compatibility for the original line of Akais modern standalone devices as they probably won't be capable. What I don’t get with big corps like Akai is even if the XL has 4GB of RAM that’s still very small for a brand new 2023 flagship model. RAM is not expensive at all these days so if your going to add 4 you can just as easily add 8 or 16. It’s like they drip feed the next step up only, instead of a giant leap. Imagine if the XL came with 8GB and that was DDR5 Dimms with say a max capacity of 32GB, it would be a game changer. To stay number one you need to knock it out the park instead of only being one or half a step ahead of your competitors. Six years since the MPC X really doesn’t seem right to just add 4GB or a 2GB upgrade especially if this should be lasting us for the next 5 plus years. I have a LIve II and love it, my first MPC and I nearly brought an X a few months back but decided to wait in the hope of a replacement of the X so I’m super excited but I really do want it to be a worthy upgrade not just a minimalist redress. I’m ready to buy the XL but I hope it is the next big thing. The MPC Keys looks nice but that’s old news now and a slightly different approach in the MPC world. I don’t need keys got plenty of synths and controllers. What I do need is CPU speed and Capacity. Another thing with say OS v3.0 it’s probably going to take up more space and more RAM so what you gain in one hand you lose in the other with what’s left of usable RAM to actually make music with. But who knows hopefully we will find out within the next month.

If that's all the updates that they have planned, I don't really think it's worth it. I would rather have four DDR4 memory slots than to be stuck with 4gb of ram that can never be upgraded. You can buy 32gb of DDR4 ram for around $80. Also, the current generation of MPCs have 16gb of internal storage, but that storage is actually just a Micro SD card. You can buy a 128gb Micro SD card for around $14, but I know Akai will charge at least $1500+ for a new MPC XL. I have a 256gb Micro SD card in my phone, and you can buy one of those for around $25.
The bottom line is, they could easily give us much better components if they weren't being so incredibly greedy in an attempt to maximize their profit margins. I won't even begin to talk about the 10 year old cpu that the current generation of MPCs are using. Smdh.

Weight is non issue for a studio device.
Even 20 lbs will not be really heavy let alone the 12 lbs.
As for the storage and Ram, Should be 16GB Ram and start storage at 128GB.
Those are baseline smartphone specs these days and expansions and such fill up 32GB like nothing else.
