@Loud McLeod Hi I uploaded the updates in the description box of the video. Here is the most recent one with results. Onion is a biennial plant and regrowing scraps most likely won’t grow another full size bulb, although other people say they have grown full size ones. From my own experience, they all grew small bulbs and eventually flowered and produced seeds, which is a great way to get free seeds and makes an interesting experiment. Here is the link from last summer: th-cam.com/video/hz6JnREkEV4/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks for watching, Misilla

I know this video is old, but here's a little tip I learned from my grandma.
When moving a plant into a proper pot after germinating it in water - gradually mix soil into the water overtime instead of just pulling it out of the water and planting it directly in the soil.
The plant needs time to adjust, so letting it do so slowly by adding the soil little by little until it's mostly dirt, is gonna lessen the risk of killing it
I'm not sure if onions care too much since they're a pretty hardy plant, but if your water-germinated onions die when you replant them into soil, it might be because of shock from sudden change! Hope this helps!!

I once had a store-bought onion that I neglected to eat in time. It sprouted in the refrigerator.
I peeled it apart, like you did, and was able to plant 6 sprouts in the garden. Every one of them developed into a full-sized onion. Luckily, my neglect paid off! I'm currently re-sprouting the base of a leek that I grew in last year's garden, like you did with the onion. Nice to see something growing in the winter, even if it's just on the kitchen counter.

What a little cutie 😀 I "reuse" my green onions every year by purchasing some organic ones from the market and planting the bulbs in a nice, big pot. This gives me fresh green onions to use throughout the growing season for all kinds of recipes. I will definitely try this as well. I always wondered if it would work, they just seemed to make it into the compost pile first. LOL

I plant grocery store green onion (scallion) tips directly into the garden several times last year and after about three weeks, there are green stems to harvest. I left the root tip in the soil and kept harvesting the green stems and those onions actually multiplied. I did not even root them in water first. just pushed them into the so bit. This year I will try some big onions too! Fun!

Same. We grow tomatoes, hot peppers, onions, garlic and mint and other herbs on our little balcony with my daughter. And we will be trying strawberries this year. It teaches the little ones so much... about work, patience and how nature works. A lot of the youngster don't appreciate delayed gratification, they want everything NOW. Growing things teaches people to wait.

I agree, alot was lost with that pre-WWI generation. My great grandmother used to make her own mozarella and grow her own tomatoes and herbs. Not one of her kids (WWII generation) passed it on. Everything with that group was store bought. My grandfather (Korean War) tried growing some stuff, but it didn't work out in the Florida elements the way it did for him up north. Now, I am the new reincarnation of the past.

You’re welcome, Kayla. Make sure to change the water daily to prevent bacteria growth and you can also plant it directly in the soil too. Make sure the soil is well draining and keep it moist. You will get greens and they may produce seeds for you or small onion bulbs. Thanks for watching! Misilla

i put a leftover cut of onion in a tupperware in the fridge almost exactly 12 months ago and promptly forgot about it.
I found it about a month after putting it in there and it was growing roots.
Today, it has a large network of roots. I have never opened the container, but the onion itself has given off enough water to keep it alive. The onion itself isn't even rotting yet.
There are no noticeable shoots yet, but there are about 45 roots coming out that are about 3 inches long each

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Zane Paul Wow! You should plant it in a pot of soil. You can grow it for the greens or let it flower and may produce seeds as long as it wasn’t genetically modified to not reproduce. 😊Thanks for stopping by!

This is no doubt what people mean when they say people who dont clean their fridges probably have things growing in them...ha ha. I imagine if you waited long enough you would find things will even make their own soil.

I was able to regrow several onions by cutting the bottom 1/4 in half, letting it root in a shallow bowl of water,, then planting in water retaining clay soil until ready to harvest. They were Hymalayan sweets and grew quite large. Also they hadn't sprouted yet and a few grew a smaller bulb attached. Thanks for lots of good information.

Your baby understood when the conversation began and was ending! That's amazing! Sorry, what did you say about onions? :) I heard you. Great idea. I noticed that onions sprouted tops in the crisper, so I potted one up and put it outdoors. It hasn't grown since! I have horrible luck germinating and growing onions from seed. If they germinate at all, they won't grow quickly. I have about 20 spring onions that germinated in May, though planted in April, that are not even the thickness of spring grass yet. I'm trying Walla Walla now. They can grow to grapefruit size. We'll see about that! LOL!
