    Great reaction and review, thanks!
As an old-school metalhead and BABYMETAL fan myself, I believe this goes beyond music and the performance itself. This is a show of mutual respect and pride. The way they (Rob, the girls and the kamis) are having a blast on stage just makes me happy, makes me feel really good. And this is what music is about, isn't it?

At the time, Babymetal was big, being the first japanese band since the 60s to get on the US Billboard Top 100, at 36 if I remember. They also performed at Wembley where they charted 7 in the UK and at the time had the highest ever one day Merch sales at wembley for any event, not just them or music. So it isn't surprising this award show production team wanted babymetal, this was right in the middle of their rise to fame. Great performance and considering the girls are about 16 or so, they had a lot of fun. Rob Halford like many metal musicians and singers are babymetal fans.

Nice reaction to this live. I think most Babymetal fans like to watch folk's reactions to seeing Babymetal for the first time. Mostly because they like seeing that WTH face. That's Moa with the dimples. I did think Yui seemed apprehensive without the choreography. Moa on the other hand. I think if she's on stage she will find away to make the most of it and have a great time doing it.

Imagine the feeling of playing live with Rob Halford, at that age and having English as your second language...wow, what an honor! You make a lot of valid points, especially Su having so much fun being herself! The Kami band killed the music! Not the best, for sure....but another epic moment in music history!

There are two things that I love about this:
For months prior to this, and afterward, Rob Halford was championing BABYMETAL. He did this because he wanted to. Originally, they were only going to do one song, but Rob was convinced to do two.
Second, during Breaking the Law, Rob screams, "They kick some ass!'. He appreciated the musicianship of the Kami Band, and wanted everyone to know.

Objectively viewed, this performance certainly wasn't stellar. It obviously wasn't something they had rehearsed for months prior to the show. And that's OK, because that absolutely wasn't the point here. Likewise, your score really doesn't matter in this case. I'm not a big Priest fan, but I love watching this, and it has increased my respect for Rob immensely. He had nothing to prove and not much to gain from this, yet he took the opportunity to get in touch with a new and totally different Metal band. To see these two from different ends of the world and different generations of Metal come together with mutual respect is so wholesome.
In a joint interview (before or after the show, I don't remember) he called "these three monster ladies" the future of Heavy Metal, and he even went through the city before the show to get a red and black leather jacket to have a matching outfit. How awesome is that?
And for a BABYMETAL fan, it's very rare to get a glimpse of Suzuka as opposed to Su-metal, which I think is what we saw here. Suzuka Nakamoto playing a round of air guitar with Rob Halford with a big smile on her face brings a tear to my eye every time.

I know you always say to wait until the end of the video to click the thumbs up, but I couldn't hold out after "OF COURSE IT'S A GOOD IDEA!". I was in genuine suspense about the score from start to finish, but you're a softie when it comes to earnest crowd engagement and stage interaction, so I wasn't completely taken by surprise by the end result being so high.
Painkiller was a bit painful, ironically. It's amazing to me that in that duet, the higher notes were coming from Rob. Maybe he went that high because they found that it sounded bad if the two of them were singing in the same range? I thought the screams sounded great, at least. We don't get to hear that kind of thing from Su-metal very often because she's so protective of her voice. It was fun to see that she's quite capable of doing it if she chooses.
As soon as I saw this pop up I knew you'd have a lot to say about the crowd. Can we also talk about the fact that the person behind the camera was completely unprepared to film a performance with this much going on at once?
By the way, if you wanted to see them live, they just announced a US tour co-headlining with Dethklok.

Su has undergone a great deal of training in order to say her ls and rs. You can see that she doesn't quite have it here but she's better than most Japanese. I always give her credit for that.
And they are playing, but really low in the mix. They took lessons just for this. They actually sold a bunch of those mini guitars, they were made just for them.

The bittersweet moment about this: both Yui and Moa were playing, but if I remember right, Mikio was teaching them how to play guitar as well as being in the Kami band himself. So they do know some chords at this point, and we’re playing along to the band, but not as much as everyone thinks.
Additionally, this was one of the last performances by Mikio with Babymetal.

I think it went well together. Not horrible anyway. What I think is cute though is Su's English wasn't as good as it is now obviously so her L's were still R's so she was saying pain kirrer. To me that was too cute. She was having fun and wasn't restricted with choreo. Same with Moa. Moa is a super natural and can free flow. Yui is a great dancer but is more shy and I think has a little harder time being free from choreography. But I think they all had fun. Even though it wasn't their crowd or normal setting. 🤘🦊🤘
Moa knows the guitar some. She was learning at one point. Yui was a pure beginner but she was trying to learn too from what I have read. Also from what I read is that Rob was to do one song with BABYMETAL but was having so much fun and adored the time he spent with BABYMETAL that he asked to do 2 songs instead.
8.7 is great. I mean look how much fun YOU had watching it. It was just a treat to see them do this. We got to see more personality from the girls too.

The best thing about this performance is the sheer joy seen in Babymetal as they share a stage with legendary Rob Halford. Honestly, the only name that comes to mind as being bigger in the metal world would be Ozzy. Now for another Babymetal reaction request. Babymetal recently did two performances on the Japanese show"First Take." On the show the artists are given one take to perform their song. Both "Monochrome" and "The One" were performed. Both were good but "Monochrome was great and I prefer it to the official version. You still might want to checkout "The One" as it is the first good look we get of Momo-Metal who is the new official third of the trio.

  • @Grington300
    @Grington300 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Good reaction. It's Moa with the dimples and the big smile ... and they spoke about being nervous about playing guitar live on stage - so were they playing? Yui was a beginner so less likely, Moa could already play some and they had a couple of the best teachers in Mikio and Takayoshi to help them learn and prepare if they were going to play live ... and the camera never really caught Moa when she might have been playing the main riff.
The camerawork really didn't help at all as it was also focusing on Mikio and Yui hitting a few power chords while Takayoshi played the solo at the other end of the stage and completely missing Moa and Takayoshi in classic rock guitar kneeling and laying back pose (entirely instigated by Moa ... of course).
But it was the moment, the occasion and sharing a stage with Rob Halford, playing a couple of his songs, that mattered most here.
They did an interview right after and Rob, as you would expect, was completely gracious, turning the attention back to BABYMETAL if the interviewer tried to make it about him, and was an absolute gent.

Crappy camera work (who points AWAY from the guy doing a guitar solo?!), bad sound work, the MC's were cringe in the beginning, dead crowd....BUT.... It says a lot about the energy, the absolute fun the girls, Rob and the Kamiband were having, to make this performance still be this good. You should check out a performance where Su sang Painkiller and Breaking the Law with Chad from Red Hot Chili Pepper on the drums, mostly fancam vids, but it's totally worth it, especially at the end. 🤘🦊🤘

heard they had only practiced Breaking the law but they had a good time that at the last minute they decided to add Painkiller. maybe that is why they dont sync perfect but to me it is still cool. wrong venue for this at an awards show? like others have said Rob is a huge Babymetal fan and Babymetal opened for them in 2018 in Asia part of the tour. and huge respect for Rob. at the end he walked off stage first so not to take anything away from the girls. in the interview he did after the show he was there for them. the reported tried to get him to talk about JP stuff but Rob wasnt having it. he has siad Babymetal is the future of metal. he wants to do a callab like BMTH did with Kingslayer.

    "They are not really playing."
Both guitars are plugged in. Yui had to learn to fake playing guitar for this performance. Moa is able to play. The common consensus is that her instrument was not turned up in the mix but she may have played parts of the song.
Yui and Moa use the same guitars in the MV of Ijime, Dame, Zettai. They were definitely not playing that song.
If you want to hear Moa play guitar, watch Shine from the Legend M concert. That's the one for her 20th birthday.

Great reaction! Was looking forward to this one with both a great deal of excitement and also some trepidation - I wasn't certain if giving you the full performance to react to would be a mistake or not. There's a shorter version on You Tube that skips over Karate and begins with the Rob Halford introductory video which I thought might have been safer as I was wondering if you might get a bit impatient wondering where the heck is Halford when you were over half way through a 15 minute video and he hadn't shown up yet... and maybe you did start to feel that a tiny bit, but for the most part Karate kept you entertained enough that it didn't become detrimental. But yeah obviously the high point is when Su announces "tonight's special guitarists... Yuimetal and Moametal!" and from there on out it definitely did not disappoint. The girls are all clearly having the times of their lives and it's infectious and makes the audience feel good about it too. So yeah, there you go, all around great reaction to a great performance!

At the time it was often discussed why this for such a rare collaboration? The crowd were not really 'on board'. Thank goodness there were some in the know.
I wondered at the time, how many well established Metal Bands, would have given their right arm to perform with Rob Halford, no matter what and where the venue.
Glad you picked up on the joy on Su's face and commented about her freedom for the two songs. At the time, it was stated Moa and Yui guitars were well down in the mix but as you said, I don't believe they were 'on'' at all but wonderful to watch.
For me it is a wonderful reminder of how bizarre and strange the BabyMetal concept is. Who would ever believe that Rob Halford would be on stage with three Japanese girls, backed by a band of Japanese talented musicians dressed as ghosts?
A very difficult one to score, so I didn't even try and guess what you would give it.

One of the few times I disagree, I do believe Yui and Moa were playing live. Let me tell you why. Listen to the opening riff. Then listen to the same riff when it comes back around. The opening riff is just too fat sounding to not be all 4 guitars. Although after that Yui and Moa were turned down in the mix (maybe all the way down) and not turned back up even when the riff comes back. Yui is mostly just trying to strum along with the main chords. But Moa is actually doing a bit more. Yes, indeed, all of the heavy lifting was left to Mikio and Ohmura. Plus the interview comments by Yui expressing how nervous she was about playing live. It may have only been the opening, but I am sure they were in the mix.

Where’s Rob? He hadn’t time to learn all of the Karate choreography, or to find a Babymetal cosie to fit. With the guitar playing - Moa is said to be low in the mix. Yui had never really touched a guitar before and Mikio was showing her how to touch the guitar in a semi convincing way

I really respect these people in the crowd who are confused by the presence of this dissonance. Powerful metal music and those squeaky voices from anime shows for teenagers. And personally, I am still in the dark about why it is so popular. Female vocals and rock music have a wonderful combination in many American and European bands. Floor, Tarja or, for example, Lizzie Hale will kick these girls out of Babymetall like dust from a carpet.

It is a miracle in my opinion that babymetal was there, considering they usually play in giant venues, I think the only reason they were there is cause of rob Halford, I think you are just fairly ignorant to how big babymetal is wherever they go, and I'm saying this as a person who likes some but not all babymetal music.

    • @THEDavidHeretic

Actually, according to a lot of the commenters on this video, the reason Babymetal were there was because they were nominated for an award.

Yui is playing. The guitars aren't props, ESP makes that very shortscale V. Moa isn't plugged in. Yui actually being talented is why she left Su and the managers' maniacal control.

How come you allways misstake Yui and Moa ? Moa was right (the smiling one with dimples who went all out) and Yui was left (more shy and stares a lot). Of course the guitars were offline. But for you to know Moa knows how to play. She owns a little E Guitar, playing for years. However nobody knows how good she is. During the pandemic they made a little online concert in the first club they ever played 2012 in Shibuya . And Moa added to her signature at the entrace the words "let´s keep shredding". Also on her birthday concert Legend M. she played the beginning of the song "the shine" on an acustic guitar. Don´t know if the sound of that guitar was in the mix. But you could clearly see the strings were moving and it looked very much like she knew what she was doing. Sorry but I guess you reacted for the wrong version of that song. And about experiance ... 2 years before that in 2014 Babymetal already made warm up at 6 concerts for Lady Gaga.

Maybe you are making a perceptive mistake of David Heretic, as though he is someone who should be an all knowing, mistake free demigod ?. 🔱🛐
Remember, you're looking at this from a perspective of a fan of Babymetal, who seems to know the details fairly intimately.
David Heretic is a reviewer who puts a lot of his time into viewing large numbers of artists.
From a description of himself, he has mentioned on several occasions, that he doesn't tend to binge watch/listen to each new artist he encounters.
He's said he usually avoids watching stuff that he hasn't seen by an artist previously, precisely to avoid seeing stuff before he gets to do a review to them.
Also he's mentioned he doesn't generally go searching for artists info, leaving it to people in the comments section to inform him (both correct and incorrect info too).
Remember, the time between viewings of each artist can be quite long thus it's easier to forget, especially the details.
To be fair he got most things right here, he knew who he was talking about on stage even though described Moa as Yui briefly.
Yes he has mistaken them in the past too, but they are similar if looking at a fair distance often seen in their videos.

@@chrisharris1522 I think calling them idiotic statements is overly harsh.
I've no idea how proficient he is at typing, or how good his spelling and grammar are, or how much of his real life takes up outs of TH-cam, but.. I can only imagine how insanely long it would take to respond to the ever growing tens of thousands of comments on his videos.
Remember he would have to scan read a lot of comments to find decent information, that's also not always right, before he might choose to reply.
Much easier to suck up the comments like these and vocally respond if necessary when doing a reaction & review of the artist another time.
That's if he remembers to by the next video.
I'm sorry, but I'm sure very few of you who have gripes about reactor videos, actually view and research such large amounts of new bands and songs they do.
Most of the viewing public are watching either specifically for a handful of bands, or they are a fan of specific reviewers and mostly watch whatever is next on their feed/newest videos.
So it's a very different ball game as a viewer to critique a reviewer/reactor.

Moa has stated before that she doesn't practice nearly as much as she should. She said she focused on dancing more. She was nervous to play live during Shine. So it was track of her playing in studio. As for this performance she clearly was giving it a good try and was probably a better student at the time. Although if they had any sound it was very low in the mix. Yui even lower lol. Yui was more of a beginner but I read she wanted to learn too. I give both of them props for doing something not 100% in their wheelhouse and still making it look fun and entertaining. The girls are very talented. Adorable and humble. I am sure if they could spend more time learning they would be great. 🤘🦊🤘
As for mixing up Yui and Moa, that happens a lot. especially if you don't live for BABYMETAL as much as most of us do.
