Why Trees are Important in Permaculture Design?

Trees are fabulous in areas where you need to protect the hydrology but where swales, bunds, checkdams, etc could more erosion/slide problems.
Trees have deep roots which do so much below ground as well as above. The mycelium relationship, the ability to create deep wells of carbon, protect from drying, stop solarization of soil biota, etc
It is important to select site appropriate trees.
Mark Shepard has adapted farming into a silvoculture/polyculture method that blends site appropriateness, trees, livestock as land management tools,
