My father was there but not on the initial wave. He fought the Japanese from 1942 through to the end of the war starting as a 17 year old. He made other landings, saw stuff and did stuff but never spoke of it except for the few stories I could get out of him. It's unfathomable to me that a 17 year old could survive that and remain a decent, compassionate cheerful man but he did. RIP dad.

@@srf2112 Visited Guadalcanal and Gizo in 2022 and will be going back this November. Vella Lavella is just a boat ride from Gizo and was the home of the Black Sheep for a time
@@SFRProductions My father worked on an anti aircraft battery there. He was the range finder as I understand it. They not only used the gun on Japanese aircraft but on small assault boats that would try and sneak in. Good luck on your trip. I would give anything to see where my father fought before I pass.
My father was there too. First division (Ray Davis), First Regiment (Chesty Puller). wounded on D+4 but survived the battle. Puller’s Regiment were shot to pieces in one week but they took The Point. My father Never talked to us kids about the combat either. Thanks for you comments.. RIP Marines.
The irony being they could have bypassed this island, it wasn't strategic as Iwo, and was hardly used after the battle. Those poor souls suffered the worse conditions for the longest period in the war, in my opinion. Maybe it's just because it finally got the recognition it deserved, and has now been well documented. We are so fortunate, and most don't know it.
I have read the same evaluation for the need to take Peleliu. I have also read that the Japanese kept most of their army in China and Southeast Asia. These islands were lightly defended but the last Japanese. Fortunately the Japanese could have had more doomed troops on these islands.
It’s crazy how far America got in 3 years when it went from an aging Navy and the Springfield rifle, to being able to pull off a massive invasion in the Pacific, while simultaneously launching the biggest airborne drop in history in Arnhem.

My Dad is driving one of e LCVP’s. He came in on White Beach 2. I stood in that very place at 8:30am September 15, 2019 (the 75th anniversary). I’ve never seen any place like it.

My dad was there at 19-20 years old, he never talked about it. I always look for him in war films. He died in 2015 at 90.
Hey everybody. Just got a bunch of photos THIS WEEK from Peleliu! Historic and emotional! My cousin is part of a group of Marine combat engineers that just reactivated that Peleliu airstrip THIS WEEK June 24, 2024 - 80 YEARS LATER!! A Marine KC130J Hercules just put wheels down on that airstrip reconstructed by Marines to establish a USA presence in the Asian theater… ramping up. All thanks to these guys 80 years ago you guys in this combat footage!! 🫡

Yes, Japanese men back then were tough as hell compared to the soyboys of today !
My grandfather was a gunner on a landing craft ship, he once said about the look on some of the kids waiting to load and go to the beachs, he talked a bit about the kamikaze, and how he would need to hold the gun on the plane until it would hit the water, as some tried to trick being out of control and come right in at low altitude. The weather was an enemy as well. 42' to 46' Then came home to working 3 jobs raising a family...in awe of that generation, and its selflessness..Lest we forget 🇺🇸🎗

Hard to think that there are thousands of guys in those shots doing their jobs, living and dying. Hard to put it in perspective.
My grand father and my great uncle's were in world war2 and my dad was in the Korean conflict, when i joined the Army at 20 year's of age my father was still in the military, it's something that i am proud of, because my father said people in the military are showing love for their nation and its a noble, selfless act to serve, i feel honored to have served ten years injured in Iraq, now i am a service connected veteran but i wouldnt change a thing even if i could
I read Dr Eugene Sledge's book with the old breed before watching the series the Pacific, absolutely riveting. But I was also fortunate enough to hear first hand some of my brothers father in law's stories as he was a Marine and had been on Tarawa & Saipan. Really puts it in a different perspective hearing it from someone who was there. RIP Dr. Sledge & Norm. FLY NAVY!!!
My dad also was there. 18 years old, BAR assistant, White Beach. All he ever mentioned was the heat, the thirst, the cries for water, and that the coral was like a reflective oven, and you couldn't dig very far enough to get cover because it just filled the hole back in.

watch "In Harms Way" great movie as it portrays the service of Navy nurses in the S Pacific theater.
Today's 17 and 18 year olds would do the same thing if they had to and if they recognized a cause just enough to put their lives on the line for.
Peleliu may have been the most horrific battle of the Pacific War. With temperatures over 100deg, no water, and the rocky coral ground making burying the dead impossible. How in Gods name did they do it?
Been to Peleliu 2x and Scuba Dived where the Navy ships were. Best diving ever… If they only knew…

I found, in a box of ancient family pics, one that my Uncle Ed "Raz" Razim, of Chicago, sent back home to the family. It is of his company, & was taken on Peleliu, October 1944. I have a hard time making out the company letter, but I will take a guess & say it is "I" company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He passed away around 9 years ago.

Peleliu and Tarawa probably could have just skipped over and saved a lot of lives--on both sides. Halsey, who famously screwed up in the largest naval battle in history, argued, I think correctly, for this but Nimitz apparently refused to abandon the assault.
Nimitz was a fantastic admiral, but Peleliu was his only big mistake. Tarawa is debatable…very costly, of course, but at least much was learned from it.
Nimitz wanted to bypass it but Macarthur on his return to the Philippines, wanted it taken...was concerned about his flank...even though peleliu is miles away...Macarthur got his way....blame him for the casualties...but, ok for us to judge with hindsight

They tell in Boot Camp that Tarawa was the Marine's bloodiest battle but over the years of hearing & reading stories, I wonder if Peleliu was worse.
My Dad was in the 321st RCT 81st Div The Wildcats that were assigned to the USMC for this operation. Gen Rupertus cost a lot of good Marines their lives and was replaced. 1st Marine Div had been rendered combat ineffective and were suffering from dehydration in the heat when command for the operation was handed to the 81st. Today 7-1-2024 a USMC C-130 landed on the renewed runway there as US prepares for a war in the Pacific again.

Willis Caywood was my wife's Grandfather. He told me was driving the boats that delivered the marines to these islands. He was a bad Mofo.

Yeah, well. When you're about to make an amphibious landing and are going to use the skills and training you've received in order to survive the Japanese defense...then you definitely don't have any jazz tunes playing in your head or some Frank Sinatra. Adrenaline is being played in this musical form whether you will live to see another day, or simply die on the beach.

Peleliu could have been bypassed, Nimitz could have contained Peleliu, but McArthur wanted it taken. In part, this is the unfortunate saga of WWII Cage Mast Admirals and Cavalry Generals. Thank God Nimitz and Halsey understood aviation, McArthur not so much. A simple example is Tarawa, there was no reason to land against the Japanese defenders. We had TBM/TBF's which we could have loaded with 4 25-gallon drums full of fuel oil and aviation fuel, and a detonator, we could have set fire to the entire island (2,400 ft yd by about 10,000 ft), we could have raised the surface temperature to the point where nothing could have survived. The Admirals in charge didn't understand how to use air power in this instance.

the reporter is describing and the film matches exactly.
In fact, when the reporter says they are on the beach, the film highlights that at the same time
with the printed statement on the bottom of the screen that says "Marines land H hour" ?
That also suggests the editor of the film timed the sequences to match the actual timeline of events.

Amtraks we’re great. Those low tech Higgins boats sucked. If Amtraks were used on d-day in Normandy it would have saved a lot of American soldiers lives. They could have pulled right up on the beach and disembarked the soldiers in a spot where they’d have a little cover.

I have walked those beaches in Normandy a few times and yes getting closer to the shingle would have really helped. Amtracks don't do so well against 6-foot waves. Just see what happened to the 741st Tank Battalion.
And where was Stalemate I?.
Stalemate I was originally drafted for the invasion of the Palau islands but the conditions of the war had shifted and there were serious supply issues that threw off the projections for what the battle would need. Stalemate II was a last-minute revised version of Stalemate I that accounted for the momentum of the war and the exclusion of the plan to invade all of the Palau islands successively.

I don't think the Marines took lessons on Amphibious assaults from anyone. For better or foe worse.

From the Tarawa landings all future landing including Normandy were planned so that the problems that occurred at Tarawa would not be repeated. What a waste of Life and materials, and in the end they didn't even need it. I've always wondered how the "planners" were able to keep their jobs? I think they should have been made to lead the troops in the next battle.

This was my Father's last battle in WWII. And he never left that island.
1800 MARINES died there 5400 wounded, there is no numbers for how many died later in hospital or at home, or other battles. That island continued to take lives long after the battle was over.
Hold the politicians accountable that put us MARINES and SAILORS in these terrible places.

Europe, where to start. Not accept the surrender of Germany without invading and occupying first, a logistical nightmare for the US and the British, and without the help of the Soviets. In 1936, invade Germany in response to their occupation of the Rhineland. Or one year earlier in 1935, when they starting re-arming with weapons and drafting new soldiers. Nothing was possible because war was so unpopular. Maybe you would expect the French to act, since they were the first to feel the threat. But instead, they built a wall, but not into the woods. Oh well.
