Actually most Greeks can speak English, one way or another, so you will not have much trouble if you are an English speaking person. The best time to visit is during September, because the sea is warm and the weather is good. At the beginning of the tourist season in March until May the sea is still cold, at least for our Greek standards. One observation on your video : When you count 5 NEVER show your palm to the other person, it's an insult in Greece. Always have your palm turned your way. I guess this goes back to the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The gesture meant good luck to the Turks, so by making it an insult, the Greeks could insult the Turks without them knowing it. Today if you say "take 5" to a Greek showing him your palm with open fingers is received as an insult and it is something you may see drivers do to one an other occasionally. One other thing tourists have trouble with in Greece is Yes and No, since Yes is Nai and No is Ohi in Greek. So if you say Nay to a Greek he will take it as Yes.
i always enjoy to see your videos. ive been to Greece 5 times and a year ago i started to learn greek. Efharisto for all your tips. take care and keep enjoy life.
Luckily a friend I grew up with here in Canada moved to Greece a number of years ago, so when I go I'll have someone to be my tour guide and help me navigate my way around. I think I'll buy a one way ticket and when he gets tired of me hanging around there he can buy me a ticket back to Canada. lol

I had 4 semesters of Ancient Greek when I was in university - had to do a language requirement. Unfortunately, Rosetta Stone wasn’t around back then - my misery would have been less, probably, with such a useful tool, LOL. Hey, Alina, thanks for that great info. I think that if I went to Greece, I’d have a great time, of course, but I’d want to do it with friends or a female travel buddy. Without the romance, it’s a bunch of unique buildings, exotic food, and colorful sunsets, you can experience in many parts of the world - lonely without someone to share it with. Love is what we came here for - and that makes everything even better. Best wishes!
I've enjoyed watching all of your travel series, but this one from Greece is my personal favourite by far. The detail with which you filmed these videos made me feel that I was a part of a virtual travel experience. This was well complimented with excellent canerwork, music and editing (shout out to Misha here!). Most importantly, great work on providing info on what's life like there during Covid times, as I was keen to learn more about it. Keep up the great work and looking forward to your content from Bulgaria 🇧🇬
Hi Alina , 🇬🇷 & it's people seem very welcoming & I am glad you had a great experience. I am glad for 🇬🇷 that they are gradually overcoming the terrible economic troubles they faced. Continued Happy Travels ! 😃
My sister uses Rosetta Stone for German! Hello from Saskatchewan! We love your videos! I discovered your Hafford video awhile back and we've been watching ever since!
Get a bank account that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee or any foreign (or domestic) ATM fees. Some accounts even refund ATM fees if you use an ATM that charges a separate fee. And always select your account's currency if asked, never let the ATM convert for you, and in general never pay in local currency if a POS terminal asks, always choose your account's currency. If you do all of that, you will get pretty much the best exchange rate available, it's the MasterCard or Visa rates which are the interbank rate +0.4% on average, and you won't get a better rate than this anywhere.
My advice on doing forex in other countries (if you're a regular traveller) is to simply open a bank account. A lot of Americans and Canadians don't realize that chequing accounts are often free in other countries. So then you can transfer money over at your leisure at the best exchange rate, plus you've also got a local (or more local at any rate) debit card. And you don't have to worry about your bank info falling into the wrong hands either. It's not practical to do it in every country, but if you do it strategically, you can save yourself a lot of grief in the long run.
It's been a wonderful journey with you through Greece. I learned and saw so much, laughed and frowned along with you, plus the vicarious thrills... standing atop mountains, those monastery trips, the wealth of first hand cultural information, the food!, well... all I can say is thank you so very much. I'm looking forward to Bulgaria. I know nothing about that country. As for Rosetta Stone, no I haven't used it. I've used a couple of others whenever I traveled to a foreign speaking country (Japan, Venezuela, Cuba, etc.) but mostly I have an ability to pick up a language while visiting. e.g. In Japan, I lived 6 months in Saitama Prefecture which was total immersion into both oral and written Japanese. I'd love to be completely fluent in Spanish, truth be told. Anyway, safe trip to Bulgaria and we'll see you soon. A Quote to Remember: “Life is about accepting the challenges along the way, choosing to keep moving forward, and savoring the journey.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart. Take care Alina.
Kalimera, Alina. You look stunning and have such a nice voice today. Thank you for five useful tips for traveling Greece. I am looking forward to seeing you on next video soon :)
You should definitely visit Ioannina & Zagorochoria in the fall (early November). The food, the lake, the folliage, the culture. I'm greek living in Crete Greece and Athens. It was absolutely magical and I bought myself and friends some beautiful silver jewelry from the silversmithing expo ^_^
Hey Alina, that's so awesome 👌 I am glad to know that everything is going fine. Thanks for your valuable tips :) OMG, It is really hot in Greece 🇬🇷 But it is so beautiful. I like the country 👍 Someday you could be a well-experienced travel agent or a guide :)
I like your attitude, it's so nice an kind, and is like whatever happens don't forget you have a unique life that is up to you to enjoy it. It's a good feeling Greece gives. I think it's the best country to travel for vacation, you have history, amazing sea, lanscapes, an happy people, plus, sure, good food and salty air. And as a background goes very well a nice Vangelis music, or greek traditional songs, Zorba the Greek in front.
If you don't have children with schooling to worry about, the best month is September! Tourist peak has lessened- better service, the weather is still gorgeous, the sea is warm, and nights more comfortable. Example, tonight 25/09/20, 9:00pm and it's 26*C-78*F. May and June can sometimes be pretty cool and rainy- comfortable for travelling around, even sun bathing, but not swimming as water is still cold. Enjoy!
Personally I think the best month for visiting Greece if you don't care about the beaches and want to explore the culture and the beautiful architecture of the cities is May. It is not too hot to walk around the city plus all the flowers are blooming and it very beautiful 😁
Hotel rooms are not noise insulared, you will hear most things around your room. So avoid hotels on main roads altogether. Loud motorcycles WILL wake you up at 3:00 am.. Good Job Alina.
I almost never give such compliments to others and you probably have heard this a thousand times but it's almost unbelievable how beautiful you are! Hope you enjoyed your time in Greece! Bye bye! 😁
Some people just make the world a better place. You are one of those people Alina, so thanks. Your outward beauty is special but no match for your inner beauty!! I posted once about Warsaw, and I hope you can make it there at some point. Probably not a more soulful city on the planet. Take care.
One thing about Greece you should know dear Alina, is that the gesture you made in the beginning, with the five fingers of your palm stretched, is considered a HUGE offense in Greece. Now that you know it, I advice you never repeat it, at least in Greece.
You can find Euronet ATMs all over Europe, but it’s not a scam. It’s just a very bad deal. They have a niche in the currency exchange market, i.e. you can find their ATMs everywhere. I never use them because I always get my local currency from other commercial banks ahead of time, but some people wait until they’re out of cash and then run to the first ATM they find.
Alina, I enjoyed every aspect and detail of your Greece travels adventures & sharing everything relevant and this advice too! Hope one day to see everything in person! Same with Rosetta Stone yes I used this years ago to try and learn Russian and Ukrainian not mastered but know a few of the common sentences or words as noted! Thank you for sharing everything as I know you made it to Bulgaria already and this post is older! Look forward to your next adventures and travels! Waving a hand hello from Missouri, USA. Be safe!
@Factor X Hello, Your English is fine no worries! Yes Indeed, politics and the tongue is a sharp weapon that cuts deep! I learned these languages than as dating a Russian woman years ago in the USA! As well as seeking in Russia & Ukraine`s dating sites after that failed! Rosetta Stone taught me the basics of conversations! Waving a hand hello from Missouri, USA. Be safe!
Fantastic video .I really like watching your travel vlog they are nice .The travel of Greece was amazing it's also great info about things to know. Looking forward to your next travel to Bulgaria Have a nice time and take care 😘
Hey Alina, I was looking for some information on the ferry-travel options within the Greek islands & also choosing the right time to travel with my family to this paradise on Earth wherein I intend to avoid the heat (as I come from India, anyway)…….& you nailed it with the right information on this video, as always!!! Thank You! I think I should visit Greece during (end-April to mid-May) OR (mid-Sep to mid-Oct), can I avoid the hordes of tourists then?
Most of us can't go anywhere, might as well learn a new language. I never tried Rosetta Stone. I use Duolingo. It's free and although its not the best, its helped me in learning Russian, German, and Polish.
I think it's so great that you are traveling right now Alina!! Also, you reminded me that I need to get back to Rosetta Stone, my sister has the Polish one and I've been meaning to get it for myself! My Polish family will appreciate it lol
Euronet has quite a bad reputation here in Austria as well. That's mostly because a few years ago they where the first ATM company to introduce withdrawal fees for domestic debit cards.
Thanks so much, Alina! Your tips are certainly welcome and needed. We can always count on advice from you, because you will tell it like it is. I agree that late fall would be the best time for me to visit there, maybe we will plan a trip there from Ukraine next year, yes I will be a permanent resident of Ukraine starting around Christmas time and hopefully this virus situation will be well under control by then. You gave some great points in this video and as always, I always treasure your thoughts and advice in anything you do on these adventures. Stay safe, keep smiling and look forward to all the things you have planned for us.! Cheers!!
Yassou Alina you look most beautiful than ever 😀😀😀 Greek beauty therapy!!! I see my town Heraklion Crete....you can try Crete also Winter... come again .
Well, I would add 1 more thing to that list, when you are in Plaka/monastiraki area, keep your stuff close to chest. And maybe visit the south of Athens not just the center.
4:57 Actually you don't need to know these greek words. In Greece we are actually use the words "ciao", thanks", "hello" pretty commonly especially ages between 15-60.
Banks here in Greece are the most corrupted companies. So try to avoid them using your credit cards from your country, in case that you need to exchange cash you should do a research for this. Locals cannot advice you because most of them are not familiar with this kind of transactions.
Just a beautiful Veiw, not bad for a girl raised in -40f or -40c (same temp brrrrr) it is no Greece heat lol awesome job and excellent idea of Rosetta Stone for fast language learning....Luv&Peace from the home province 🙂✌⚘🍻
Bravo. Congratulations for more than 71K subscribers. I'm one of them for more than 18 months. You've already achieved a lot by your famous long Russian tour. As a greek historian & ethnologist normally, I should be glad for your trip to my country in these precarious times. It's nice to see Santorini again, the island of the origins of my family, through the eyes of an experienced visitor. However, in another message, very soon, I shall explain to foreign tourists, why they must not choose Greece as one of their future travel destinations. Of course, the reason is not the "pandemic".
Hoi, Alina, Bravo!, well done. Been to Athina also for example in February and it was really nice, warm and less people around. Good, actual tips and be aware not all airlines inform the people about the actual entry rules. This can be especially problematic with the 48 hours to fix you´re QR-Code.
Hi Alina! These are good, sensible and informative tips, based on your seasoned world travel experiences! Avoiding the peak travel season to any country is one of my ‘golden rules’. How are you doing on language learning? Generally, I have a good ear for languages and accents. I can greet people in many native languages, without necessarily being a fluent speaker. But I always want to learn more. As a native of Montréal, I am fluent in both official languages - English and French. I am also a fluent speaker of Lithuanian, and I can read and understand Latvian semi-fluently. My knowledge of French and my high-school training in Latin also helps me with reading and semi-fluent understanding of the other Romance languages. My big ‘blind spot’, however, is with the Slavic languages. I grew up and went to school with many other kids whose parents came to Canada from Europe after the war - especially from Poland and Ukraine, but I did not learn much more than the names of national culinary delights and the occasional swear word. And I have no proficiency with the Cyrillic alphabet. I certainly appreciate your Slavic language learning suggestions and insights. Спасибо (Spasibo), Alina!!!
That's still incredibly impressive! Slavic languages are very challenging and from watching my Dad and some friends try to learn it, it's definitely a language you have to hear a lot to understand the pronunciation. They would think they were saying it right and they were waaaay off lol. I am 'fluent' in Russian, but even I make some slight intonation or grammar mistakes without knowing it.
@@AlinaMcleod Thanks for your compliment! I would certainly benefit from the Rosetta Stone lifetime plan. This is what I will present to myself at Christmas. I hear plenty of Belarusian and Polish in Vilnius - and my father’s home village was on the border with Poland. And everyone in Lithuania above the age 35, including all of my cousins, are very fluent in Russian. I would love to surprise them with some spoken Russian! Last but not least, I absolutely love the fact that women are the key agents of democratic social change in Belarus!!! I’m looking to your forthcoming videos from Bulgaria. Be happy, safe, and healthy, Alina!!!
I wish you could have met the very charismatic Stephanos Tsitsipas, Greek's top Tennis player and no. 6 in the World! He had a very popular channel and travels a lot playing in all the top ATP events.
Alina we hope to visit Greece again to visit smaller treasures ...stay safe n we love u here in Greece..i prefer Hellas but anyway..lol your Greeks is ok, Hellenic language is difficult
Thank you for the usefull info. As to the third point u raised: in Ancient Greece the god of trade was the same as the god of the thieves: Hermès. This may help us to understand that the gap between those two is not that wide. Have a good time and wish you good times in Bulgaria. Greeting fm Holland
Mandarin Chinese. It's absolutely wonderful, if you stay after it. I slacked off for 5 years when we had 2 kids and my skills are mostly useless now. Use it or lose it.
Hmm... Alina paused the creation of Russian subtitles, turned on the Aphrodite mode again and released a new video sponsored by the language-learning product. Looks like a very smart promotion strategy, You know 😄 Seriously, your channel is a great stimulus for learning English, which in itself is good training for our instrument of intellectual activity, but at the same time seems to be a much easier task than learning Russian. And this video perfectly matches your usual quality approach: the maximum of information in a minimum of time. Despite the fact that Greek banks to some extent insured Russian tourists from their exchange games by excluding the Russian ruble from them in advance, it was very interesting to know about your experience with that 👍🏻 P.S.: #5.1. Elevator repairman`s certificate is welcomed 😅
Quite hot on the early of September? You bet, I’m still sweating my ass off here😅 and it’s the end of the month. I definitely recommend you to visit Greece on September. The weather and sea temperature are way better than May or early June, and the prices are not at their pick.

Tip #6: Never show the number 5 with an open palm towards a person in Greece. It's actually an offensive gesture called "mountza". :)
Ooh interesting thank you!

Cheers!!
That's so exciting! I'm very happy for you :)
@@AlinaMcleod go to moldova and israel;;;;
I used rosetta stone before going to Russia very helpful
That's wonderful! Traveling in Russia outside of Moscow/Saint Petersburg and knowing some of the language would definitely come in handy.
@@AlinaMcleod it certainly helped in Moscow x
You look fab in the thumbnail 😍 (and always btw)
@Alina McLeod, just a correction. Travellers from The Netherlands they do not need a negative Covid19 test to enter Greece
Yassou Alina you look most beautiful than ever 😀😀😀 Greek beauty therapy!!!
I see my town Heraklion Crete....you can try Crete also Winter... come again .
Thank you for the advice, specially on what to do at the ATM, and ware are you know, do you have more new videos
Well, I would add 1 more thing to that list, when you are in Plaka/monastiraki area, keep your stuff close to chest. And maybe visit the south of Athens not just the center.
Thanks for The tips. Best TH-camr
You have a sweet way of explaining it
4:57 Actually you don't need to know these greek words. In Greece we are actually use the words "ciao", thanks", "hello" pretty commonly especially ages between 15-60.
They were just some quick examples, but of course knowing a language more fully is ideal.
Can you swim between the islands? I want to save money on ferries.
lol I think that's a death wish
Lol... You’re cheaper than even me.
This comment really cracked me up!
Banks here in Greece are the most corrupted companies. So try to avoid them using your credit cards from your country, in case that you need to exchange cash you should do a research for this. Locals cannot advice you because most of them are not familiar with this kind of transactions.
Just found your channel. Great video. Greece is so beautiful, hope to go there soon again. 😊💕
Thank you!
I ❤ your 🇬🇷 and Alina
Just a beautiful Veiw, not bad for a girl raised in -40f or -40c (same temp brrrrr) it is no Greece heat lol awesome job and excellent idea of Rosetta Stone for fast language learning....Luv&Peace from the home province 🙂✌⚘🍻
It definitely is! I used it years ago for Japanese before going there.
Useful tricks and information Alina; I would like to go to meteors and the volcano that you went there before 😄🙌🏻✌🏻
Thank you for this information
Lots of great useful help. You look great also
I wish you could have met the very charismatic Stephanos Tsitsipas, Greek's top Tennis player and no. 6 in the World! He had a very popular channel and travels a lot playing in all the top ATP events.
fantastic
Alina we hope to visit Greece again to visit smaller treasures ...stay safe n we love u here in Greece..i prefer Hellas but anyway..lol your Greeks is ok, Hellenic language is difficult
Nice vlog 😊
I like your vlog 😊
Nice new video update, Alina!❤️❤️
Thank you!
You're Welcome, Alina!
Thank you for the usefull info. As to the third point u raised: in Ancient Greece the god of trade was the same as the god of the thieves: Hermès. This may help us to understand that the gap between those two is not that wide. Have a good time and wish you good times in Bulgaria. Greeting fm Holland
Hermes was not the god of thieves, lol!
Mandarin Chinese. It's absolutely wonderful, if you stay after it. I slacked off for 5 years when we had 2 kids and my skills are mostly useless now. Use it or lose it.
Use it or lose it is incredibly true!
Hmm... Alina paused the creation of Russian subtitles, turned on the Aphrodite mode again and released a new video sponsored by the language-learning product. Looks like a very smart promotion strategy, You know 😄
Seriously, your channel is a great stimulus for learning English, which in itself is good training for our instrument of intellectual activity, but at the same time seems to be a much easier task than learning Russian. And this video perfectly matches your usual quality approach: the maximum of information in a minimum of time. Despite the fact that Greek banks to some extent insured Russian tourists from their exchange games by excluding the Russian ruble from them in advance, it was very interesting to know about your experience with that 👍🏻
P.S.: #5.1. Elevator repairman`s certificate is welcomed 😅
Thank you for your advise
Quite hot on the early of September? You bet, I’m still sweating my ass off here😅 and it’s the end of the month. I definitely recommend you to visit Greece on September. The weather and sea temperature are way better than May or early June, and the prices are not at their pick.
Did you only have to prove vaccination entering the Schenge, or was there checks in each individual country ?
Great work 👍. I like you channel 😍
Best information thanks
great video!
Thank you!
Stunning! Chicago?
