Some tips from someone who not only has lived through hurricanes, has been a volunteer fire fighter and now works to help prepare and respond to disasters. Obviously evacuating if possible but if you can't. Fill buckets, bath tub and any containers with clean water while you still have power, the water can be used to flush toilets and was dishes. Shut off your gas/propane if you are staying at your house - do it outside at the supply line. When you lose power, turn off all your breakers, leave one on for a single light or outlet somewhere so you know power has come back. The reason why to turn off is that appliances can be ruined with the power surging (intermittent power, or large load, when power is restored, just turn one breaker on at a time). Secure all outdoor items. IF you have a swimming pool and no storage for chairs - throw them in the pool. Get garden hoses into storage. Tie any items you can't place securely inside to a tree, post or something. Prevent as much debris as possible from blowing up against your home. This goes for trash cans also. Make sure you have flashlights with batteries readily available, charge your cell phones now and keep them charged until you lose power. Update your family and friend contacts before and after the storm, don't wait for someone to ask if you are ok. If you weren't able to board up windows and doors, make sure you have a safe interior space in your home for the occupants, including pets - they will need you calm/be their rock. Have a go bag - this means all important documents, laptop, keys, any insurance info. flash light, etc. along with pet leash, harnesses, food for them and you, along with water, bowls, snacks etc. Please don't wait until the last minute. Edit to add more tips: freeze 1 gallon jugs of water - take about 10% off top to allow for expansion, keep some jugs in freezer and when power goes out, place in the fridge, I usually place in a veg bin or pot for water condensation, this will help keep some food for a few days. Tip and a must if insured - take pictures and video of before storm. Stay safe everyone, I am concerned for all those that were unabile to evacuate and hope that you are protected.

What is unbelievable is people who do not believe in climate change or at this stage have it low on their scope of care. A lot more hurricanes now are rapidly becoming catastrophic 4 hurricanes. The longer we do not do anything about climate change the worse things will get then maybe some slow learners will get it
@@waynepond8748 How is that unbelievable. Hurricanes have always happened. We have ~150 years of data on what is "normal" and some tinfoil hat nutters are convinced that a bad season is proof of climate doom! This crap happened after Katrina too, all the kooks came out of the wood work with their sky is falling nonsense. Then we went a full decade with no meaningful hurricane to speak of. What is even stupider is that you think "we" can do anything about climate change. You clearly don't even look at the data from the climate proponents you keep parroting. If you bother to read it, the conclusion is clear, we cannot cut emissions enough to matter. If you want to do something, maybe have a look at geoengineering.

For those who wonder why people livingv on the coast won't/don't evacuate. Even yesterday, 1-75 N was at a dead halt around Ocala. With millions of people living in this state, it's difficult to evacuate. Getting a hotel away from the coast is impossible. I know, I tried yesterday. Fortunately, we're not directly on the water. From Bradenton, FL.
Well that and employers will make us work till Tuesday and some even weds morning. No law stopping employers for firing employees for evacuating so I'm stuck in a less then ideal house in Sarasota for hurricane.
@teddyj5187 first, the employers will still have to be there themselves to fire people.Second, that is wicked of them. If the state declares an emergency, does that stop the employer stupidity?.
If you're tired of living with the threat of hurricanes and you're a retiree, look into moving to Panama where we live. Beautiful weather and no direct storm hits. ❤ please stay safe.

As a resident of the Appalachian region, God speed good folks. I've just witnessed the worst devastation this area has ever seen in my lifetime, but it has brought our family & communities closer together than they've ever been before. It was harrowing and heartening.
yeah... i'm in the same region and not to be offensive, but its literally wiped families and communities completely off the map. I struggle to find peace knowing the carnage, death, and destruction that takes place during these artificial "natural disasters"!! I'm truly caused to wonder at how much God has to do with this. To think that so many victims who lost everything failed to cultivate their faith and pray to God is absurd(of which i'm not accusing you of)... i know God works in mysterious ways, but the unconscionable atrocities that continue to take place and multiply almost daily causes me to deeply ponder every bit of it!! Its almost as if a faith in God is equatable to playing the lottery... in the time of need, few win but most lose. Especially since the 20/20 smackdown productions!! Most can't see it... be it elimination of health and life by med intervention, conflicts with fake roots, or man made weather events that decimate regions and more... not to mention the weaponization of food and technologies---- I'm truly caused to wonder where any Godspeed is at and, even if so, is such abounding even comparable to a mere state of existence of 25 years ago? To me, it seems like humanity is being something terribly duped, faith based or not!! Its as if society is starting to live a "juiced" version of the movie IDIOCRACY... very few seem to notice and very few seem to care, unless its rooted out some shallow superficiality or a twisted form of selfishness... So, you know, Godspeed... i'm 'bating😑😮💨😒😖😞

It's unbelievable what Florida is going through. Praying for all those in the path of hurricane Milton. 🌀
Thank you from Fort Myers.
