This documentary was a project started in 2020 with the intention of editing an unfinished film made between 1976 and 1977. The original producers, John Davie and Tony Richards, went to the effort to interview some important people who knew Holst personally. The documentary has interviews including Imogen Holst, Edmund Rubbra, Herbert Howells and Michael Tippett as well as testimonials from several students of Holst. This documentary brings together several incredible memories that give us a glimpse of the man beyond the composer. Forgive me for the quality of the footage, I tried unsuccessfully to make a dignified restoration, but this project was done with dedication and love for Holst's music and life.

Although I’ve listened to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s recording with Simon Rattle of your wonderful “Pluto: The Renewer,” I must say that David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is more my cup of tea. Still, “Pluto” is definitely a fitting bonus movement for _The Planets,_ as renewal through any means necessary is Pluto’s astrological representation. Not a lot of people know that astrology played a big role in the original suite, so I’m glad that there are those who do. If you’d like a specific recording to listen to, I suggest Sir Charles Mackerras with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. By far and away, it’s the best.

This documentary is pure gold for everyone who appreciates Holst and his music. I loved the story about the orchestra getting the St. Paul's Suite with the ink still wet--how amazing! I played this piece in high school myself and felt nothing but wonder for his student who had the extraordinary privilege of playing in that orchestra.
Lovely little film. Watched this a couple of times now, great footage of Imogen, fascinating lady, and of Edmund Rubbra. Well done, wonderful.
Quite by chance I came by The Planets individually. And I remember finding it incredible to believe that the man who wrote Venus The Bringer of Peace, could also be the composer of Jupiter The Bringer of Jollity and Mars The Bringer of War.
And can I just say that John Williams owes this man a great deal of gratitude. Without Holst, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman and Close Encounters would not sound as beautiful.

A fantastic documentary to a great composer and beautiful human being. So interesting to hear so many first hand accounts. I could also listen to Imogen Holst all day she, like her father, imbues enthusiasm. I always visit her grave when I pay homage to Britten.

A lovely sensitive and inciteful portrait of the man and his work. Really interesting descriptions of his teaching from his clearly impressed students. I was surprised at my own emotional response to Imogen’s description of his memorial service at Chichester cathedral. Tomorrow will indeed be our dancing day…….🙏 Bruno

Thanks for letting us see this! It's an excellent look at all three aspects of Holst (composer, teacher, and activist), and I found out a couple of things I hadn't known yet.
Beautifully put together, Bruno. It was so good to hear the reminiscences of so many of GH's younger associates, especially his former pupils at St Pauls.
Well done, Bruno - great job. Very nicely edited and assembled. This video is a real gem for the history and legacy of Holst, and a superb treat for Holst fans and scholars alike. Indeed, it's important material for anyone interested in classical music the world over, particularly given Holst's tremendous contributions to the canon of serious art music. So many revealing insights into the great man and his life and work. It's really important that such material is shared openly so you have done Holst's legacy a great favour by your excellent work. As regards some of the concerns about quality of old film footage and the desire to remaster such footage, I personally don't think you should worry. Often it's nice when such footage is enhanced (usually at great expense), but sometimes the faded and imperfect elements actually have a charm and authenticity all of their own. As a Holst/Planets scholar and massive fan of Holst, I loved it. So thank you very much indeed.

Very interesting thank you. I'm fascinated by the attitude that Benjamin Britten had to those two great friends and towers of British music, Holst and Vaughan Williams. He loved Holst's music and often used to tell Imogen as much. On The other hand he didn't for R.V.W.'s music at all !
