How does the Gustav Holst Society benefit from Bruno Lima visiting the UK in September 2024 as part of our celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Holst’s birth?
Gustav Holst (GH) is a British composer, born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 21st September 1874. However, unlike the majority of British composers, GH has an international reputation.
During World War 1, GH composed an orchestral work which was to become the best known and most played/recorded work of the 20th century, namely The Planets.
There must be few, if any, professional orchestras throughout the world which have not given performances of this work; hence, Holst’s international reputation.
Bruno is our South American correspondent. He is a young student, very knowledgeable about GH with good IT skills. He is keen to promote Holst throughout South America and in particular his substantial output of classical music. For example, Bruno’s research discloses that in 1946, the National Symphony Orchestra sof Brazil gave a performance of the Planets. He has also discovered that the earliest mention of Holst in the Brazilian media dates from 1928. Today, other Holst works performed in Brazil include the Brook Green Suite, the St Paul’s Suite, the First Suite for concert band and the opera Savitri.
By visiting Cheltenham and London in the UK later this year, Bruno will have great opportunities to widen his knowledge and appreciation of the music of GH. The Society will also benefit from Bruno’s international and independent approach to scholarly perspective.
Bruno’s visit to the UK can only be of benefit to the Society which looks forward to Bruno successfully promoting GH and his music throughout the 13 countries in South America where apart from Brazil, Holst is virtually unknown.

Holst: Phantastes Suite (1911) III. Sleep (arr. for piano and clarinet)

In 1911, Holst composed a suite for orchestra called “Phantastes.” It was performed on July 23 1912 at the Queen’s Hall, London, by the New Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer. However he withdrew it after this first (and only) performance. The piece has since been forgotten. Gustav Holst: Sita, Op. 23 (1899-1906) Closing Scene From Act III
มุมมอง 8352 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a rare live recording made by Opera Viva on LP, 1983. At the time when Holst began composing his opera Sita in 1899, Richard Wagner’s influence was prevalent in fin-de-siècle London and was especially strongly felt by the young composer. Holst would later describe the opera as ‘good old Wagnerian bawling’. In 1906 it was submitted for the Ricordi opera competition, but failed to win the...

My 7th grandfather Charles Grim of Winchester Virginia under General Wolfe was a pow at the battle of Quebec at 23 years old. He later got freed and ended up being very close friends with Daniel Morgan and drinking buddies. The Royal Irish and Royal Highlanders were proud to serve the Crown, this is such new age Liberal tripe about the Irish and Highlanders being anti British. Both the Highlanders and Royal Irish were Protestant and pro British. The French were weak, untrained cannon fodder. Their great, great grandchildren pollute the modern Canadian Armed Forces with the same weakness and cowardice.

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

Hold on! Historic events have many nuances. The highlanders mentioned had not lost their homes solely because of the 'British' as stated in the video, but were turfed out by wealthy Scottish land owners/clan chiefs who saw greater prosperity with sheep.

Overall, very well done. You don't hear many female voices narrating military history. They did a better job than Hollywood showing the smoke cloud and confusion that enveloped the battlefield when firing started, smokeless powder was not invented until 150 years later. How many modern men would have the stones to stand (literally) in line and trade musket volleys at 40 yards? And step into the holes in the ranks and reload? Then to advance in line with bayonets.

The British Redcoat fought in every corner of God's earth. He served with honour, heroism and great distinction . Often he served a Parliament that sent him to war but resented paying him for that privilege. He was often under manned, ill equipped and maligned by the public, but nearly always carried all before him. God bless all British Redcoats past and present.

The man that brought my family name to this continent was one of those sent in America to fight in the 7 years war. He was a landless Alemannic German farm boy in what it now eastern France whom enlisted in a mercenary unit. The unit was contracted by the French crown to serve on a Compagnie Franche de la Marine ship bound to Acadia for the siege of Louisbourg in 1758. He deserted with most of his unit of "Volontaires étrangers" after a short time in the fortress. He ended up in Boston for a few years but settled in Quebec in 1765.
