8:56 "We can fix that." Plus the damaged propshaft easily done too by a good machinist. The gearbox, on the other hand, hopefully it has shearpins or couplings internally that protected the precious gears. But that has to be determined by the shop. If the gear box is common enough, then replacements gears may be on hand, be used, scavenged or new. When shopping for a boat of any kind, check the power plant and driveline for any issues that may put your ride in drydock and wind up costing a pretty coin. But the prop, yeah, that's phosphor bronze and can be soldered/beaten back into shape, easy peasy for any qualified metalsmith.

I wait until I need to relax and let my cares drift away before watching your Vlogs. As I enjoy your daily adventures even if they my seem trivial to some, the little niggles that are encountered reflects upon everyone's journey and being able to relate to our own short-comings or lack of patience in other areas. Misconceptions of those that are still holding on too tight to life's up and downs I can relate to. Thanks for the warts and all and self depreciation of your post's. In short your Vlogs are very enjoyable.

I woke with a migraine today and thought to watch one of your soothing river boat excursions; all those locks were stressful (music jarring) you must have been exhausted by the end of your day. And, you are right, it does seem that there is always someone watching when we screw up! Anyone that wanted to hear the whole story--would have to search back and find it for themselves. So, I edited my original comment. I added a new first line, which tells you where to find "The start of the story". I hope this helps.

If you get a chance to stop just after bridge 161, you'll find the Sleepy Meadow Pet Cemetery. Well worth a visit and rather surprisingly quite a happy place, filled with memories of dogs, cats, rabbits & horses, whose owners clearly thought the world of them. Given that this stretch of canal has been around for well over a hundred years, I'm amazed that the offending rock inflicted its very first bit of damage on a prop, unless it had been tossed in recently by vandals? Either that, or it's happened many times before, in which case one wonders why it hasn't been removed.
Excellent upload, as usual - thank you David.

I’m guessing that at one point in time commercial and industrial canal traffic required two sets of locks be in continuous use , but ever since the canals have devolved into mostly recreational uses such redundancy in capacity is excessive. But you don’t want to tear them completely out in case recreated use swells to the point of needing them again

11:17 It's always blowy on Heartbreak Hill.
I do have a habit of cruising early in the year. Almost every Livaboard I see says to me 'You're the first hirer I've seen all year.'
I remember going up the wind took my bow clattered another boat, and had me pinned to the wrong side of the cut.
I apologised to the other boater for giving his boat a thump, he said that it was ok because the same had just happened to him.
Try as I might I could not get the boat off the side. So I gave up and had some tea and cake.

Thanks David, 14:05....no chimney and no cap..... I am reminded I took off my chimney when I cleaned Percy yesterday and forgot to put a cap on.... a trip to Fradley for me tomorrow.... top video as always

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, I remove the chimney and cap now when going through locks otherwise I have a tendency to flip them off with the centreline when I'm holding the boat on it in the lock...

Excellent as usual. Not over keen on that music for the high speed locks but I do enjoy the speeded up bit, especially as I know those locks! We've got the Hatton flight next month. Cheers.

Lucky it wasn't your prop that got turned into a piece of industrial art. I hope they have it on the wall or on the coffee table as an ornament.

The missing lock in the pair at 4:30 is the location of the former Thurlwood Steel Lock. It was installed because one lock in the pair was suffering from subsidence due to salt mining/brine extraction. The idea was the steel lock could be jacked up on it's foundations if there was further subsidence, and the chamber walls wouldn't deform or bulge like a conventional lock. Quite a bonkers contraption, with it's guillotine gates and visible culvert tubing, probably quite a noisy experience too - www.geograph.org.uk/photo/601242
I think the other abandoned lock chambers on Heartbreak Hill which have been converted to bywashes are also that way due to subsidence - certainly the case for the one where the chamber walls are held back with a bevy of acro-props!

Another enjoyable few minutes of my day. Thanks, once again. As a side note: I wonder if the Canal and River Trust could talk large men into volunteering as security to catch people spraying graffiti along the canals. I think if they allowed the security to publicly flog those people within an inch of their lives, it would be fairly easy to find volunteers. Just a thought. At any rate, great vlog and beautiful landscapes, as always. Happy cruising!

I think the security men could be tempted to make people graffiti just so's they could have their fun flogging them...!
