    Why do people keep comparing commercial stage IEMs to normal ear buds? Is it just me noticing this?

  • @conspickerous
    @conspickerous 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    What I noticed with AudioTechnica is most of their lower end models are those with the neutral sound signature, like the M40x and the IM02. The M50x has that v curve, M70x has that treble emphasis, the IM03 has that warm sound sig and the IM04 has even a more warmer or say darker sound sig. Anyway, great, honest review Lachlan! When you get the chance, try the Dragonfly Black with the IM02.

    • @Llucius1
      @Llucius1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup , I must say that IM03 is not for everyone , especially you are a vocal guy, but if you are a musical guy , you will love it. Classical music , IM03 is the best driver ever.

    I own the E70 and agree with the review, I use it mostly for mixing and monitoring on stage or live performance, so far the most comfortable in terms of EQ and clarity without piercing my ears.

    I've seen you mentioned the 846 in your clip. I own the Shure 846 CL from the moment they appeared on the market and even now,they're awesome, they have an even better sound signature than as the first day.
    Also bought the Shure Bluetooth adapter and it's great.
    Great review on the 846 CL would be great because nowadays the price has lowered a lot and the build, the sound quality are outstanding.
    It would also be great to review the Shure bluetooth module RMCE-BT1 or BT2 together with the Shure SE 846 CL.
    Nice videos dude! ☺️

    Great review, sounds like these won't do the job for studio monitors but the sound signature is something I like so I'm wondering does it actually sound bad or is it just bad for the job and for a good price I might want these.

  • @davidharrismusician
    @davidharrismusician 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I enjoyed this analysis. You actually nailed the qualities that a stage musician looks for in an IEM, because ultimately, if a monitor has even a little bit too much treble presence, it is extremely hard to work out a good mix. As a musician myself, I am definitely going to be checking these out, because, while these certainly won't sound great in most settings, as an on-stage IEM they seem to fit the bill. Thank you for these videos, friend, they are beautifully made and extremely informative!

  • @ronwright4684

    So, I hear you saying that the the background noise reduction is good and the bass response is excellence. I am a BASS PLAYER looking for a REASONABLE priced IEM to use onstage. These are the two most critical needs I have - reduce background noice without the expense of audiologist fitted ear-buds and enhanced bass sound.

    • @stanley-fghijk441
      @stanley-fghijk441 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Wright Get these. I'm a pro bassist and can tell you that these blow away IEMs priced 2-4 times higher. The reviewer is correct in that this particular model is for live players and producers and they absolutely slay onstage. You'll hear everything with zero disruption and clean separation. Best money I ever spent. Cannot believe I almost did the Audiologist and $1000+ IEM thing.

    Interesting review Lachlan. I've owned my own pair of E70's for more than a month and have similar views on the design where I think the short length and large width of the nozzle can make it uncomfortable after a long listen. I do agree that the treble is blunted however I somewhat prefer that as sometimes the sibilance of certain headphones does irritate me and I will say at the price of $699, I agree it will be rather disappointing to most people.

  • @andyhaochizhang
    @andyhaochizhang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice review, refreshing to see a review that made some good points and not that positive. Actually agree with a lot of the things you said. E70 is "darker", a decent quality for stage monitor actually.

    • @andyhaochizhang
      @andyhaochizhang 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing to point out though im02 has a pretty huge spike btw 5khz and 10khz. In fact a lot of audio technica headphones have similar signature, one of the reason some people say audio technica is too warm. E70's treble rolls off after 5khz but it's not that bad, actually pretty similar signature to LCD series (good bass mids but slightly roll off treble). I think what makes it a much more noticeable problem for you is because you expected refined im02 but got something exactly different.

    Lachlan, about a year and a half ago i watched your video on the ath-im02's and you convinced me to get them. It was the best purchase I ever made. The lows are present and they have an overall a very pleasant sound. They are great but I'm looking for a pair of throw around earbuds that arn't as expensive. Im stuck between the e40s or the im50's. I tend to listen to bass heavy music. which do you recommend thats balanced, but has a more pungent bass curve.

    Musician here, IEMs are supposed to be very clear and neutral, most people will think more expensive monitors sound worse, that's the point. They accurately show all the mistakes in your playing, so you can play better live. They don't color the tone at all.
    They aren't for listening to music, no IEMs are.

  • @BojanBojovic
    @BojanBojovic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is what I heard today with E50. They are relatively accurate, with some strange notch at 200 to 300 hertz, the bass was so-so, but the high frequencies were not so impressive. I will listen again in few days, but not sure how they will do in real live playing situations. For listening music from a phone, not a problem. For any professional use, not sure...
    As for best profile, well it is always a relatively flat frequency curve for start, while only R70X does this at some extent, others not so much.

    An extremely misleading & inaccurate assessment of an excellent in ear monitor: one of the most natural sounding headphones I am sad to see a fine reviewer like lachlanlikesathing has understood this excellent product so poorly. Is it his preconceived notions about this headphone or usage of below par music players & music files? What ever it may be, i urge people to try ATH E70 at least once.

    • @llysender
      @llysender 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The e70 is a love at first listen and a detailheads wet dream. Every thing sounds so natural and clean. My only issue is the imaging is a tad poor and there is a hard cutoff of the lower subbass

  • @TheLostrocks

    One thing worth mentioning, Even though I very much agree about the treble bluntness, I did find them to have a noticeable increase in micro-detail than even an analytical earphone like the Sony MDR-EX1000, up to the treble that is. The E70 is kinda special in that it's very detailed but quite dark at the same time. A bit reminding me of the Stax 007 with the SRM-717 amp.

  • @FrankyboyLegend
    @FrankyboyLegend 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't had any problems with the IM70, but there have been a lot of complaints about the pins snapping off of the 2-pin connector on Head-Fi and other sites. The biggest downside is that once the pin inside the IEM is broken you will need to buy a new one instead of just buying a new cable. They probably find MMCX to be dodgy and prone to become loose or they just want something proprietary.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. To me the pin connection seems very secure, since it doesn't rotate and come loose like MMCX. But I don't detach it very often; I've learnt not to detach this stuff unless absolutely necessary.

    • @conspickerous
      @conspickerous 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, had the IM02 for two years already and no signs of the pins breaking or splitting. Maybe because I didn't detach the cable since I bought the AT-HDC5 cable.

    did you happen to try the im04? i heard in the im series, the im04 is the dark chocolate of the bunch. Maybe just maybe i think the e70 is suppose to continue that tradition (despite using 1 less BA). Also i'm curious that you said the treble is rolled off, i recall you mentioning that about the im02, i guess the e70 is MORE rolled off? curious about your thoughts

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +On A studentbudget the IM04 is dark, more mid-bassy, and has a more distinct treble peak than the E70. The IM03 is like the 4 but tilted brighter overall. The IM02 has flatter mid-bass and as a result sounds more neutral. The E70 ends up sounding darker than all three, with more bass and also more slam.

    • @onastudentbudget8647
      @onastudentbudget8647 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** hm... seems like a predicament... a triple BA with good bass slam is quite unique to hear! but tilting that far may have a been a mistake. Any chance you tried the e50s?

    I never understood why people say bassy headphones and low detail are good for electronic music. A good producer will make incredibly detailed and dynamic sound design, that would make detailed neutral headphones critical for listening.
    I listen to Trance, Progressive House and Electronica and can't stand listening on cheap earbuds or bassy headphones.
    Sorry if this sounds dickish, but It really irked me.

    • @josephBo
      @josephBo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you. Edm sounds best on a detailed headphone that is also complemented with solid bass. Idk why anyone thinks any genre would sound good with less detailed headphones. A lot of the edm i listen to is mastered so well

    • @MannequinOngaku
      @MannequinOngaku 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kai You It makes me happy someone agrees :)
      I just spent this whole weekend listening to Diverse System's 15th anniversary album, RADIAL, and I have to say, the mastering and sound design is some of the best I've ever heard. It's worth it if you get the chance to pick it up.

    • @felixf4378
      @felixf4378 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good producers are rare when it comes hip-hop or electronic music, that's why it's safer to go with a warmer, less detailed earphone.

    • @thepetsaver
      @thepetsaver 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree, if you listen to stuff like Marek Hemmann or Max Cooper, it's way better to have neutral hearphones. Probably for hiphop too, if you listen to quality producers, you'll want quality, balanced heaphone to hear and appreciate what they heard when producing.

    • @nonyaatl8630
      @nonyaatl8630 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The review couldn't be more misleading. He's using studio monitors mad for mixing to review low quality files and source. The e70 is very revealing, so any issue with treble is coming from the music he's playing or the device.

  • @harhccha
    @harhccha 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was the recessed treble consistent across various ear tips? The spin fits have consistently boosted the treble across my IEMs, but perhaps the superior seal gave dominion to the bass. I'm only speculating of course.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Unremarkable Harry yeah, I could not find a tip that gave me the treble I wanted, even the Spinfips failed me!

  • @smmmmm88272
    @smmmmm88272 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably a bit late, but I felt the same initially going direct into my s7 and especially compare to the ls200's I bought at the same time.... but I think I've found the perfect balancing force which reveals high end treble detail whilst giving you that low end push: pair ath-e70 with a bright DAC like the dragonfly red. To me, the df red combo elevates the e70 to an almost perfect iem, with crisp and airy vocals coupled to an amazing sub bass. James Blake sounds incredible for example, rather than truncated and bassy. (Still have fit problems tho - argh!).

    I’m curious how these 2 to 3 year old designs stack up against the newer KZ offerings. I just got the AS10, ES4 and the ZS10 and I’m VERY impressed. Not saying I’m impressed for the price which is $131 for all three. I’m saying IMPRESSED regardless of price. I have the AT E40 and all three are better. I also have the same problem with the E40 having the wider short nozzle and it can irritate my ears. I never really have them in for longer than 30 minutes because of this. The KZ stuff is NICE. I’d love to know what you think of them. I’ll say this.....if you spent $150 on all three of the models I mentioned you won’t be disappointed. And if you were it would be MICH LESS disappointment than the LS70.

      JR, if you don't mind me sharing a set or two of MEE audio earphones for much much less, that you may like if that's the sound you go for [balanced(?), laid back, non fatiguing, not boomy or too bright, textured(?)... I can use them all day, everyday with no irritating feeling whatsoever].
      The N9P [with mic] was the pair that I've been using since 2014 after grabbing them on the cheap [$15 - retail was around 25-40?] for a 2-month long trip, but did not want to use my more expensive stuff when out in the crowd.
      Since those came with a mic, its housing eventually fell apart exposing the wires & eventually led to its demise at the end of last yr. [not too bad for 4.5 yrs].
      Anyways, I've been on the lookout for its replacement in the N9 [its non-mic version] for the last 2-3yrs. without any success [discontinued]... and then suddenly, there they were from its maker on their own E seller account. That was in FEB [2/01] when I bought a set to test them & make sure they sound the same as the previous pair [they did].
      I also grabbed a couple pairs of the N8, its smaller sibling [described as "bass heavy"] just to see what they sound like [not bad at all, somewhat darker/warmer than the N9].
      After posting a comment to someone else on another site about a popular Sony wireless set on sale for $150, down from $300... it hit me that I needed to stock up on the N9/8 as they're discontinued & won't be around forever.
      On 3/20, I used my bigger E account [for bigger $$ purchases] & grabbed a dozen of them [the last 5x N9 & 7x N8]... the seller ended up giving me a discount by having me paid for 10 total & he included the other 2 sets for free ;-P
      I thought those were the last of the N9's, but about ten days ago, the seller brought out a few more, so grab one & see how you like them... along with a pair of N8 if you like (=
      Do share, if you should... or anyone else, reading this =D

      @rorygallagher-redslug 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the reply, appreciate it! I might give them a go and hopefully I can return them if I think they are too 'dark' for me. Whilst I think the Hd-25 were too harsh sounding, the Aiaiai tma-1's i also owned previous swung too far in the other direction with too little treble. Maybe these will strike a balance for me...
      the UE900 were perfect in this regard with a really nice smooth treble I could listen to for hours, but the build quality of those is absolutely woeful so I don't want to get those again!

    • @rorygallagher-redslug
      @rorygallagher-redslug 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you were right! I bought them to try, and the sound i think the sound is just a little too dull. The bass is so good that I could have potentially lived with the dark treble but aside from that I can't seem to get a good fit with them, so I am going to return them/sell them on!

      Oh, I listened to the XBA-300 in HK! It's in the IEMs @ Jaben video. It's like the total opposite of the E70 - very treble focused, probably too much for me.

    wanna talk about blunted treble? listen to the Aurisonics forte. I couldn't believe it.

    I've purchased the ath-e50 few months ago and was disappointed either...the sound is unexciting on these, vocals sound dull and make a feeling like being 'far away'. The bass is great though, not to deep, but punchy and detailed. Plus they are terrible in terms of comfort. Overall, it doesnt worth the 200$ in my opinion.

    Hey Lachlan, you should probably run in your earphones before doing reviews. 3 drivers takes around 100 hours of listening before the drivers work harmoniously. I leave them playing music overnight with my Onkyo DPX1. This will let the sound balance out and typically sounds more stable, I really recommend you trying this method before reviews because they actually have a big difference before and after. Sorry if you have heard this a few hundred times!

    The review couldn't be more misleading. He's using studio monitors made for mixing to review low quality files and source. The e70 is very revealing, so any issue with treble is coming from the music he's playing or the device.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The E70 could certainly be used for mixing, though I think it seems more designed for stage monitoring (despite what Audio Technica marketing states). Compared to some of the other mixing monitors I have owned - for instance, the Shure SRH1540, Sony MDR-7550, Beyerdynamic DT770 or Audio Technica's own ATH-M50x, the E70 does have a different treble signature. It's not necessarily bad in and of itself, but just because you don't agree with my opinion there is something wrong my process. I don't believe I specified what source or files I used in this video, so I'm not sure how you could come to that conclusion.
