After 5 years with the 235 I opted to treat myself to the 965 before CIM last year. I love the screen but it’s way too much watch. Serious overkill for just a runner. Hopefully if lasts 5 years and I can justify the money.
Good feedback for people to hear. It's a great watch. I used the 965 on my morning run today. Hey Matt, cheers from Colombia, great content as always. I really can't understand Garmin's watch lineup. As an ironman Myself, I normally change my watch every time a new one comes (always use the Forerunner), but when I got the 965, it really was a disappointment, the battery is a bummer, and I never liked the wrist move to get the screen on, so having it on all the time, kills it every 6 to 7 days. It was so bad, that I trained last year with an Apple Watch Ultra, and never went back to my FR965. The 955 is a way better watch IMO.
I think the 955 is a phenomenal option. It's also at a better price point. I haven't done an Ironman in a few years but I don't know if I'd choose the Apple Watch Ultra for it if I needed a watch. Other than that, it's great. It's a very smart smart watch. 👌🏻
@@mlegrand Yep, I agree. The 955 its great! And I started using the Ultra last year, because I focussed my training on running through the whole year; having my Audible app, credit cards, and music on the same watch, is amazing. For an Ironman, I'll choose my Forerunner in a heartbeat.
Great vid. And . You saved me.. just doing the dishes while watching this when you started talking about battery life.. "omg. I need to charge my watch!!".. phew.. I can quickly charge and head out for my run still
Planning to walk across thailand, about 700km over 20-25 days... would you say the 265 is more than enough? if so ill buy using your link. The key for me is to be able to use the garmin connect, so I can connect to my insta360 x4 so it can do that cool speedo overlay thing. Ill have my phone with me, so i wont need those map things, just a decent way to track km, calories etc? Great review bud, thank you. I guess my question is, does it need the gps to track km, or would it still do it, but maybe not as accurate etc?
No pressure on using any specific link. I would say that the main thing would be the fact that the 265 doesn't have true mapping but you mentioned that. I'm guessing you'll want the GPS from the watch to overlay that data on top of the insta360 camera. There's probably a lot of ways to do this and you could even do it with your cell phone's gps if you wanted. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
what should i go for?? i am out for a watch that helps me with insight on my sleep. i usealy want a wach that is accurate, i am leaning on going to 265 cuz its small and nice. but i dont hate 965. i do bodybuilding and want more out of my health. plis help what should i chose.
Great review! Are you using these watches in freshwater or the ocean? I am wondering how they would hold up with ocean use and am concerned about salt water corrosion - mostly on stuff like the charging port.
When I open water swim it's typically in fresh water conditions here. Salt water might give the metal parts or charging ports some difficulty but Garmin does test for that. Rinsing it off after each swim would be a good idea.
I have the apex 2, just in the 30 day return window. I am not satisfied with it the screen is small and I love love the materials used which is half of the decision on purchasing the watch. I am thinking of returning it and getting apex 2 pro, 255, 955. Reason is I’m not getting 965 and 265 is don’t see much of a difference plus I like the MIP screens more. Would you recommend me getting the apex 2 pro or 955. Im afraid that i might be not aware of something and that the 955 could be too old or something like that. The 955 is made entirely of plastic so am I willing to sacrifice looks and durability over satisfaction 🤷🏻♂️
The materials are pretty similar for the Apex 2 and Apex 2 Pro so the bigger screen might be all you need. I'd personally probably go with the 955 but the materials are actually nicer in some ways on the Apex series. The AMOLED screens are the major changes coming to the newer devices. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@ thank you for replying back! I agree the apex series has nice materials but the watch is due for an upgrade, I love coros but I feel it’s super heavy training watch, but on the other than I feel like garmin is more well rounded in a way. The 255 is on sale where I live and putting the 955 on double the price of the 255. Would recommend waiting for a discount and getting the 955 or get the 255 right away. Thank and I appreciate you creating those amazing videos and putting in the effort, truly outstanding!
Great video Matt Battery life I will pay extra for the stamina and training readiness are key for my next watch. Once my Felix 3 dies or I am doing a long distance tri
I think the 265 is fantastic but because you are a hiker you might want the maps that are on the 965. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
the monster says : it's not about hating running....it's about runners :D :D :D. joke aside. Thanks a lot for your video mate. it's helping a lot that focus on the differences and what's right for who. thanks.
😂 - Why Garmin why!!! This is when you know you review too many Garmin watches and you get annoyed that they moved the charging port on one and only one Garmin model series. 🤦♂️
I use a screen protector on this watch but the issue is that bezel is slightly curved. So you basically have to have a screen protector that is too small to fit just the face of the watch and not the edge. It's not great 😬
Great video man! As casual runner and do gym workout side by side 6x a week, 265 is more than enough. 965 have huge price difference unless there's sale ongoing then get it. But also as someone just few months bought 955 for $430 and recent just switch to Fenix 7s PRO SS because of steal price $530, just buy what makes you happy (think later your sad wallet haha) 😁
Good point Jervin! I always mention suggested retail prices in these videos but you can some times find amazing deals on the high end options. 🙌 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@jaemylez Its not brand new but only bought last December with 2yrs warranty. I get lucky that some rich dude selling it for bargain price, he has collection of watches. Try to look at your local markets, there are people especially rich one that impulsely buy things and sell it when they get enough of it 😁.
@@jaemylez But from my Exp, there's not much change from 955 (which I own prior) going to 7 Pro series. You are definitely just paying for Premium build and material. But metrics its all the same and even the HR sensor I dont see much difference. Buuut what I definitely notice is how Heavy it is and that for 7s Pro (42mm) only, probably regular 7 Pro would weight more. I suggest keep your 955 if there's no issue and wait for discounted price or good deal for 7 Pro to come out.
My wrists are tiny and I’ve gotten used to the 965. It’s a beautiful watch but there’s nothing wrong with the 265 if you prefer that watch instead. They’re both pretty similar in size.
Ok so I have a question… as a forensic scientist I need a watch that will accurately pin point my location and confirm that I was in that location at that specific time.. will this watch do that for me ?
Ok, this is an awesome question. Garmin devices allow you to save your location at any time. It's an option within their quick menu system which could be a nice quick way to do this. It could have issues locating satellites or it could be slow to load satellites if you're inside. By default the "waypoint" has lat/long and elevation. It also names the waypoint by date and time. That name is editable so I'm not sure if that would cover what you're looking to do. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I just found your videos and it’s being great bc my boyfriend is falling in love with running and I want to support him as I’m a monster that dislike running 💀 He is planning on doing a Triathlon in a couple years and I want to give him something that will stay with him for a long time. There’s a sale going on and I don’t know what go get him fr 265 or fr 955. What do you recommend?
That's a hard call. Those are both awesome options. He'd be perfectly fine with either. The trade off is maps and longer battery life on the 955 vs the very nice bright beautiful screen on the 265. If he works outdoors or something like that, I'd go for the 955 because the screen does well in that scenario, otherwise I think I'd go for the 265. You're a very kind monster to be buying a nice watch for your boyfriend 😂 but you should try walk/jogging. 3 minutes running, 2 minutes walking. I bet you would be very surprised to see how well you would do in your small local 5k (3 mile) fun run. Best of luck to you both!

As someone who has a forerunner 745 and is planning to do some ultras (100m at most and Ironmans) would you suggest one of the new watches or the forerunner 965?
I might take a look at the new Enduro 3. It's a great watch at a good price. I'm still finishing up my review but it should be out this week. Are you ok with bigger watches? Any of the 51mm devices have bigger batteries.
Hello there. One question. If I have my Garmin Edge 530 and I want to upload the data from the sensors of my bike to my smartwatch can I do it with Garmin Foreunner 965 or 265? Garmin Edge 530 works with Garmin Connect app in my phone, so I guess that a Garmin smartwatch has to have this functionality as well? I mean I want to upload this data to Strava and also my smartwatch as well. Thank you so much
Typically you’ll connect your bike sensor data to either your edge unit or watch but not both. If your bike sensor is connecting over ANT+ you can pair it to multiple devices. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I’m Really struggling to decide I wanted to get the 955 but it’s nowhere available in my country So the choice is between 265 vs 965 but I’m unsure if the 150$ more is worth it for me

The last three here are pretty durable. I also have a video about the Suunto Race coming up. Anything with a sapphire lens seems to hold up well. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Neither of these have the sapphire lens tho correct? I’d assume the 965 might be a bit more durable with the titanium bezel? My only other concern is how the screen of these is pretty in line with the bezel while some other models seem to be “sunk in” a bit to protect the lens. Thanks again for your videos.
"omg. I need to charge my watch!!".. phew.. I can quickly charge and head out for my run still
Awesome! Glad this video can serve as a small reminder. Hope you had a good run!
Love the titanium bezel of the 965.
Me too. It’s small but it looks really nice. 👍
@@lhzsdgsfbvv that’s why I bought it
Planning to walk across thailand, about 700km over 20-25 days... would you say the 265 is more than enough? if so ill buy using your link.
265. Look for a Black Friday deal. 👌 965 has maps and Golf. ⛳️. If you need that, great. Otherwise skip it. 👍
@ the 255 would be an excellent option as long as you’re ok with missing mapping and golf. ⛳️
Not too much difference in price, so definitely 965 for a bit more
Nice call Exa! Thanks for watching this one!
Great video Matt

That Fenix 3 has done well over the years. 🙌
I just started to run a few times a week and but I’m also a hiker. I currently own a Garmin Instinct 2 Solar. Which would you recommend?
I think the 265 is fantastic but because you are a hiker you might want the maps that are on the 965. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
the monster says : it's not about hating running....it's about runners :D :D :D. joke aside. Thanks a lot for your video mate. it's helping a lot that focus on the differences and what's right for who. thanks.

So useful, thank you Matt !
You are very welcome. Glad it was helpful in some small way. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
What? the charging port on the 265 is on the opposite side? Gosh, definitely a deal breaker for me. Thanks for that.
😂 - Why Garmin why!!! This is when you know you review too many Garmin watches and you get annoyed that they moved the charging port on one and only one Garmin model series. 🤦♂️
@@mlegrand ;-D
amazing video! thank you!!!!
Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Any recommendations on a screen protector for the 965? When swimming will a screen protector trap water or moisture on the watch face? Thanks
Wow..where did you find a fenix 7 pro at that price. I have a 955 and I am contemplating on getting the fenix 7 pro myself.
@@jervinreyes21 Thanks for the response. Makes alot of sense. I definitely prefer the size and weight of my 955.
Planning on buying the 965 but the size might be too big for my wrist. So thinking of getting a 265 instead. What do you think?
My wrists are tiny and I’ve gotten used to the 965. It’s a beautiful watch but there’s nothing wrong with the 265 if you prefer that watch instead. They’re both pretty similar in size.
As much as my 965 is big on my wrist. I quite enjoy the big screen. I will never go small.
@@mlegrand thank you so much!! I went for the 955, I’ll let you know if he likes it. I’ll try jogging and I’ll be back at the end of the year 😂 thank you for your help
Ya it works exactly the same in regards to the watch uploading to Strava.
I’m
Really struggling to decide
I wanted to get the 955 but it’s nowhere available in my country
So the choice is between 265 vs 965 but I’m unsure if the 150$ more is worth it for me
Hey Oliver, what stuff do you like to do? Do you like to golf or need maps?
@@mlegrand I do running and swimming and plan to do cycling in the future.
I don’t think I will do crazy distances in the near future but it’s definitely on my to do list for one day.
I do trekking sometimes so maps would be interesting but I always got my phone with me on treks so I don’t necessarily need the maps on the watch.
And I don’t Golf or do indoor climbing.
@@oliverbui2662 - The 265 is a fantastic watch. That's what I recommended for my older brother who does up to 1/2 ironman distances and he's enjoying that watch so far.
I love your videos!
Wow, thank you so much Taylor! That is so nice of you to say. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
How rugged do you feel
These watches are? Most of my running is on trails and I’m a bit clumsy. 😂 I like the Fenix but the cost keeps me away. Thanks!
They’re very good!
@@jeffhallman676 - right. Both of these have the same Gorilla Glass but I typically recommend a lens protector just in case. The Fenix is the one that has a sapphire lens.
@@mlegrand Thx!
I wonder if you could flash 265 sw to 965 sw... :D
Now we're talking! I'd love to see some hack like this work

Thanks for the video Matt!
Just wondering which would you choose between 955 solar and 265. I At the moment they are selling at the same price in my city.
I don’t do extreme sports, I only run and swim regularly. Cheers! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’d go for the 265 at this point. Solar wasn’t super helpful on this watch in my opinion. The 955 would have maps and golf if that is any interest to you?
@@mlegrand thanks for your kind reply! Helps a lot!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Do you need to wear a chest heart rate monitor for these 2 watches??
They both have optical heart rate sensors built into the back of the watches. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Would love to see chapters on your videos.
I can add those in post. TH-cam will actually do it automatically after a few days. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand thank you. For runners, do you think it's worth considering any other watches? You also didn't mention display differences in terms of glass, so is the glare a non-issue?
Leaning towards 265 for price but I'd love the 965.
@@MonticArckeys - I'd be confident with the 265. It's a great option. I do have a full video about that specific watch if you want to check it out. th-cam.com/video/yS7y6j1tWUc/w-d-xo.html
Another watch to consider would be the more affordable new Forerunner 165. It actually came out 2 days after this video and I've yet to review it. It should be a great option for runners but it is missing a few things. Triathlon, Training Readiness Score, etc. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Iv'e had a 645 for like 5-6 years now and i want to change... Im between these 2... But I still don't know what to choose. Im a marathoner... but i do like the occasional hike on marked roads. That large screen and maps are telling me yes... but the $200(canadian) extra have me thinking.
Help.. what do i do? lol!
Ok, I've got you. I suggest waiting until black friday and seeing if that $200 gap is still too much to cover. If so, the 265 is an excellent option and still has breadcrumb style navigation. It won't be as good for hiking but there's always the maps on your phone. 🤷♂️
Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@mlegrand it is already balckfriday sales in canada so the difference isn't going down. thanks for the tips.... now I'm leaning 265.... also having read the other comments from people who had both and returned the 965.
Thanks for the help!!!
By the way... ordered the 265😅
@@juncaarle - Nice! Hope you enjoy it buddy!
can you change the watchface without the button?
Not that I know of. You can't swipe between Watchfaces like you can in some other devices.
What would you gain jumping to the Fenix 7 pro models?
Nicer material and an excellent flashlight built into the watch body! 👌 🔦
I'm thinking about it..coming from 955
Put on some romantic music so that the Venu 3 and 265 can make a baby 😂

Lol. I love hiking and biking and tech. I was never a runner. I preferred sprinting and team sports. Im 6 foot 3 and even in college was 220 pounds. Just not a long distance runner.
And now they have a 165. 😮
Yes. And I think it's a really good option for people who don't need triathlon and training readiness. Hopefully I'll review it in the next few months. 🤷♂️
I love my 965 , I choose it after quite a few of your videos! At first try in the store I thought it was too large but after going shopping a few times (my family was going crazy with my tergiversations 🤣) I went for it and I have zero regrets! It keeps me so motivated loving the badges and the levels and the Garmin coach etc! Thanks for your informative videos!
Which one your wife choose. Its nice to know woman opinion
She's worn both of these a lot and she likes them both. Her eyes aren't great so she might go for the bigger 965 but she's currently using the 265 the most.
