Does FLEX Actually Matter? - MythBusters

  • We're often led to believe that flex has a huge impact on the way we hit the ball, with a softer shaft tending to steer the club head left and a firmer shaft sending it out to the right. Is it really as simple as that though? In this video, Simon puts this common theory to the test.

    Fantastic explanation and demonstration. Shows what modern data capture technology can prove over the conventional belief. Must admit I doubted this when Simon told me in my fitting but the data doesn't lie. Weight of the shaft is more important to help timing and delivery over flex. I'm a convert, thanks Simon!

    Great explanation Simon! I am a recent convert (thanks to your channel) of focusing on weight (including swing weight) vs flex for overall timing of the swing and particularly the release. Flex to me as you say is more of a preferred feel…and for years was also an ego thing. Everything had to have an X or 6.5 on the label. 🙄 At 55 yrs young I finally gave in and went a little lighter weight and softer flex through the bag this year. My game and my back both thank you! 👍🏼

    Very good and important video. As I have learnt through many hours in your good company through live and recorded content, it's the weight 🏋 that is the more dominant factor in how a shaft fits most golfers.
    More people need to understand this, and this video helps.
    Great stuff as always, and due to the great explaining by Simon, the Trackman numbers screen was really not needed anyway. 😄

    This is good....but now I can't blame my awful golf shots on the driver shaft flex. Great Content!

    Great explanation, so Shaft weight therefore likely to have a greater influence than flex on feel and results…? Could I ask, in general, the likely result in ball flight of selecting too light and perhaps too soft a combination ..? And secondly, would a lighter stiffer flex perform similar to a slightly heavier slightly softer flex, example 55g stiff versus a 65g regular flex..? Love the content, thanks .

    • @Precision_Golf
      @Precision_Golf  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Correct regarding weight having a bigger influence on results but flex affects feel a lot too.
      Too light generally means a pull or pull fade, too soft can mean not trusting the feel and backing out of the shot but the flex alone will only add a hair of flight/spin. Heavy will create a push or a handsy flip.
      The lighter and stiffer shaft would still perform differently to the heavier and softer shaft as your delivery will be affected by the weight difference

      @@Precision_Golf thanks very much for that clarification….Changed from steel to graphite and feel I have gone too light !! It’s like learning to play golf again !! 🙂..suffering with a pull and perhaps too light a swing weight.

      @Precision_Golf  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@eugenekennedy9053 yes, try heavier swingweight (you will only need 2g or 3g to see a difference) but it could mean needing a stronger shaft weight too

    great post but did you notice whether the increase in spin (I think you said 20%) resulted in a big change in carry? I know you drew it more so that may have impacted distance but did it change the distance overall in your opinion?

    • @Precision_Golf
      @Precision_Golf  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For me it did not make much carry distance difference but the higher spin resulted in less run out. It can, for the right player, help retain ball flight though

    Great insight Simon thanks, as we couldnt see the screen what was the difference between club head speed of the 2 shafts and did that translate to ball speed and distance? Thx

    • @Precision_Golf
      @Precision_Golf  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As the shaft weight was the same club head speed was the same (less than 1mph difference) so there was only 1 yard between the best hit with each shaft too

    Hi Simon. What I've found with softer shafts is that I really notice the head almost twisting on off centre hits. I've tried X flex and love the stiffer feel but found, as you say, the weight goes up and then I loose the feel of the head weight. Currently playing a Tensei blue AV 55 S in a TSR2. Are there any X-flex shafts around that weight you would recommend?

      If you want a very stable shaft then the Diamana WB 53 is close, also the Mitsubishi Vanqush 5 and Accra TZ Six 50. For a bit more tip balance Accra TZ Five 50 and Graphite Design Tour AD VF-5

    How do you use swing weight and total weight to influence a swing during fitting.

    • @Precision_Golf
      @Precision_Golf  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delayed reply. Total weight determines the overall connection/synch between body turn and club, helping the player stay in posture and stabilise delivery. Swingweight is about timing the hands/club head release through impact to regulate the club face alignment. Factor in balance point of the shaft to this equation too!

    If the shaft twists the clubface open or closed, it's a f*^&%# shaft.

    • @Precision_Golf
      @Precision_Golf  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a characteristic of torque which all shafts possess. Some shafts are higher, some lower in torque rating, this can also be affected by the size of the head. Could you elaborate?
