I remember hearing this on the radio in middle school when it came out, and being stunned while swept away in a nostalgia for a time that happened before I was born while also pining for a future time in my life, like a premonition of being haunted by unrequited love "over tea and cigarettes." I couldn't tell who it was till the DJ audio tagged it, so it was this mystery heart-swelling moment in time for weeks whenever it magically answered my pining and popped on. The adult world of unspoken seduction and wistful longing evoked by this song is so compelling and arresting to my senses.
One of the best pieces of music of all time. It's kind of mind blowing that this achieved the success it did. When Great Expectations came out and this song was everywhere for a while, this became the first non-video game non-movie song I became obsessed with as a kid. It seriously messed with me. I was 11 when promotional push for that movie was in full swing, and I just remember feeling so forlorn, broken, damaged, etc... every time I heard this song. Just a deep visceral feeling of sadness. Along with a lot of video game music in a similar vein (Castlevania, for example,) it helped shape my musical taste; I have always loved this dark, deeply morose, baroque-heavy minor key sound. I love harpsichords, Wing upright pianos, etc... anything that gives that regal, courtly sound, my favorite chord in minor key is the V chord, etc.... and man, this song really is one of the best circle of fifths progressions of all time. I Will Survive has nothing on this.

Thank you so much for this oh my god I am literally IN TEARS. I listened to this on repeat in my childhood!!! This has been stuck in my head for years and years as a fleeting memory. All I could remember was “ingénue” and the melody from the bridge. Finally, I searched for the right words and I found it. And it’s been over 20 years since I last heard this song. Listening again took me right back to being 12 again. I felt so vulnerable. I cried so hard but it was in a cathartic release sort of way. Thank you so much for helping me to find this again.
