The most underrated and my favorite Bond theme.
To my mind, this is the only Bond song that was sang from the perspective of a villain and a lover.

Whoever asked Garbage to do this deserved a raise, great crossover.
That month David Arnold (composer who did few bond songs before) offered the theme to Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson,[1] who was very enthusiastic; Arnold said he "never heard someone screaming down the phone".[3] A week later he sent the band the rough demo, which they approved.[8] Manson requested a small change in the lyrics, disliking the line "I know when to kiss and I know when to kill", so Arnold and Black changed "I" to "we" for the final version.[1]
Garbage drummer and co-producer Butch Vig said that when the group contributed to film soundtracks, "one of our fantasies would be to do the Bond theme or do the new Bond song."[8] Manson called herself a fan of the series, "an institution I admire and has always captured my imagination since I was a child", and the films had a "sensibility quite similar to how we approach making music".[3] The chance to record a Bond theme appealed to her because "you know it's going down in movie history",

@@iangardiner2265 I admit I'm no expert, as back in those days, I mostly (and still do) listen to video game and movie OSTs, but this song stood out to me, but maybe that's only because they are invoking, on purpose, that "James Bond" style opening music, with all the orchestral music.

My old VHS tape of 'The World Is Not Enough' had this music video right before the movie began, and I'd always watch it all the way through on replays. It's just such an eerie and memorable video- so much dark imagery like the detached head singing, body parts being assembled, murders and terror plots. Great way to hype you up for a Bond movie.
Yes. And even with Xmas Jones, the movie has one of the series' most grim storylines.

The World is Not Enough might not be anyone's favourite Bond film, but a good case can be made for it being the best Bond theme music video, and rather unique for being written from the villain's perspective.

David Arnold did an amazing job here with Garbage. Best bond theme ever imo. The video and a aesthetics are on point. I remember watching this when I rented the DVD of the parent movie back when it came out, and thought it was really something. Never appreciated the music until a decade later.

I remember watching the making of this music video. Shirley did a better job of driving the BMW than she let on. Love Garbage so much! And they did this song in June when I saw them at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA!

I've always been a fan of Bond movies. But I remember explicitly when watching "The World is Not Enough" I was absolutely captivated by the theme right from the start. The whole piece as shown here is mesmerizing.
As an extra: it's amazing how Bond films keep eliciting some of the most awesome intros and music themes ever. When I was a kid "You only live twice" absolutely stole my mind and taught me about Japan.

I was probably 12/13 when I first listened to this. I was not smart enough to look up who the band were, but Shirley's voice had stuck in my head. Many years later, I was in grad school, when I suddenly remembered and googled it. I'm so glad I did! I'm now a big Garbage fan.
