Hey Matt. Awesome video. Do you recommend a 40-50L for European Summer/Autumn backpacking ? (My first time, Im from NZ). My gear is normal + DSLR/Macbook (I do lots of photography so might have an extra mirrorless camera) Osprey vs Rei vs Kathmandu - if it has all the key features, 40-50L for summer size and the bells whistles- does it matter which one? (Osprey has been recommended to me 100x more then Kathmandu). Also, dayback add on- is that necessary or just have my own daypack? What about the Trolley back pack hybrids? Thanks
Hey Matt, the REI Mars bag is now discontinued, if you didn't already know. :( Just letting you know so you can update your link in the description. I [think] the updated version is the REI XT 85 pack. Looks like they added some waterproofing to the zippers, switched the big front pouch to two smaller ones and changed up the water bottle pouches on the side. I was going to buy the Mars 80 online today and found all of this out. Heading up to grab the XT 85 tomorrow, I will report back in a couple months for the other readers here once I've ran it through the rounds traveling :) Cheers!
Loved the vid. But honestly, every pack I've examined from NorthFace felt thin, flimsy, and over-priced. Is there a particular NorthFace pack that you like?
Would you be willing to do a more thorough review of the REI mars 80 pack? I think it checks all my boxes but would appreciate a deeper dive into the pockets, organization, materials, how you adjust for torso length, etc. not a lot of videos on this pack it there
The REI mars does not longer exist for sell, what's another good model I can buy? I'm traveling for one month and I half in Europe and then another month to Australia so I want something light to move comfortable! Thx
Ive always been worried that the frame adds too much weight. How heavy is your backpack when it's empty? I have a cheap 20 dollar backpack I bought on Gmarket (Korea's ebay) and has been fine so far, but maybe it's time to get something durable.
hey man, i was wondering is a back pack like the one you have small enough that it can be a carry on? or do you have to check it in?? thanks in advance:)
Hi Matt, I've been doing a bit of research and came across Tortuga packs as a way to comprehensively manage your in a maxed out size carry on bag eliminating the need for check in luggage. Have you seen these guys? We'll worth a look. All the reviews rant about them. I'm still deciding but thinking the Tortuga is the way to go. Nick
can someone please help with with something, now I am planning my first trip and I am going solo , I bought a backup and all but I don't know weather I am going to check it in or take it with me on the airplane????, I am sorry for the stupid question (._. )
Thank you very much, this was quite helpful :) I'll only be going somewhere for about a week so,I don't think I should spend $200 on a backpack just yet (also, I don't currently have that money). But, in the future, once I do some major travelling, I will invest in a really great backpack. :)
No, no, no-this video is hardly helpful in choosing a backpack, except maybe for the side access zipper. The fact that you need it to be the right size for your body, have adjustable straps (jeez, even school one compartment backpacks have adjustable straps, try finding, for whatever reason a backpack without adjustable straps and you'll have a problem), that it needs padding and that it needs to be water resistant are just too obvious. I'd constructively suggest to cover: Are you going to leave your pack pack in hostel/hotel storage and therefore need lockable zippers? Do you want ripstop material? Is an incorporated raincover a good idea? Are you going to hike with it or just move around airports and urban areas? Etc. Good video editing though.
I remember he said he had the same backpack for several years until South African Airlines lost it, however he's since replaced it with the same model (I believe?). Hope this helps :)
How to pick the right backpack for your travels #travel (New intro on the videos too!)
Good
wow like

Wow...one of the best unbiased videos I've seen....thanks man!.
Really cool! I recently finished a roadtrip in Europe which was unbelievable! I put videos on my channel but a camera just can't capture the moment!
Thanks very helpful. Looking to reduce the need for luggage. Down to a carry on bag now.

Picked up the Osprey Xenith 88 the other day. Loved it!
Hi Matt, is there a pack similar to the REI Mars that you would recommend? So frustrating they’ve discontinued it.
Backpacks are so much easier to travel with. I never want to use wheeled luggage again. I'm looking to buy a new pack soon. Thanks for the info Matt!
i going to east asia world trip and you think this is the best for me?

Do you have any experience with wheeled backpacks ? Do you recommend them ?

Do you carry with you a sleeping bag and a tent? If yes, how do you attach it to a a backpack?

I remember he said he had the same backpack for several years until South African Airlines lost it, however he's since replaced it with the same model (I believe?). Hope this helps :)
