Wow congratulations Andy! Incredible that you ran a time like that - I hope you and your 97 kids are so proud. I love these time trial videos - thanks for doing them TRC!
I Absolutely love this channels production and the way the topics are explained and broken down. I'm definitely picking up a pair of Alphafly 3's for my next half (my 1st half I wore Vaporflys and loved them) . . Once I build myself back up to that point that is. Just getting back into running so I signed up for a 5k at the end of April, then just go from there . . I'll honestly probably be ready for half come fall time. Can't wait until I'm running long distance again it's the GREATEST feeling!!!!
Honestly, I wasn't expecting such big differences in speed. I'd love to see Mizuno Rebbellion Pro 2 in some your shoe time trial video. Such a controversial shoe but can be found for much better price than AF3.
Obviously Andy runs fast, so I would be interested in seeing how the other Running Channel athletes do and their thoughts about the shoes, doing the same shoe test. I have the vapor fly 2 and I can say that it does make me run a bit faster than my everyday trainers (i.e. Infinity run 3's).
Nike gets all the oxygen in the super shoe discussions, would be cool to see how other brands compare, but I understand one person can only do so much running for one video
The thing is that currently, marathon race shoes are highly personal. The Vaporfly line is the only one that works relatively consistently for everyone. Some people might do better in the Asics, Adidas, etc. but the Vaporfly is pretty much a safe bet.
What pace would you say is fast enough to gain an advantage in these shoes? My last 10k was at 4:53/km so a lot slower than the times Andy runs. Would I gain much from a pair of super shoes?
100% with you on the Vaporfly 3. Bought them recently and not enjoying them. So much so I went back to the previous model. I'd love to try the Alphafly but a bit pricey for me.
I watch a lot of your shoe comparison videos (enjoyably) and understand that they aren't meant to be a controlled scientific test. I think that adding your heart rate data would be a great addition to these tests though. I think it would be a fairly accurate indicator of the difference between the shoes. For example, you were excited about the Alpha 3, did that translate into an extra 5BPM during your run? if so then you might have just been carried by adrenaline. was one of your slower times paired with a slightly slower heart rate - maybe the cold weather had you down and you just didn't bring you fill 100% to the road? This, to me, would be a fantastic indicator as to how much of the time difference is attributable to the shoe and help eliminate some of the MANY variables with your testing methodology. It's data you already have, and with your advanced fitness level i suspect your heart rate is an accurate indicator of effort.
Andy. When the new metaspeeds come out, I want to see you test them vs the alpha 3s. I'm honestly blown away by their (your) performance today. Good work and good feelings.
Are these shoes helpful for someone running a 5:30 per km pace? I’m tempted to try a carbon plate but feel like super shoes might be a bit silly for a slower pace
There's a podcast from Doctors of Running addressing this exact question. I think that the answer is that the shoes are beneficial for non-elite runners but that nobody can be sure how beneficial. If I remember correctly they mention that some studies suggest that the benefits dwindle as the place slows, while other studies claim the opposite.
I've got 3 of those 4 (not the Aphafly 2) and also have the AF1 and I'd go Vaporfly 2 up to 10k and AF3 for over 10k or maybe the Hoka Rocket X2 for the shorter distance. The AF3 is brilliant!
I have exactly the same shoes, and have tried the AF2. I would also go VF2 for short distance (5km), and AF3 for everything else. VF3 is such a disappointment. Fells like a Saucony Speed 3...
I wish you would test a regular eveyday training shoe alongside the super shoes, to show much you can gain. It would give some perspective of the advantage you get, even on a short distance. Thanks, great video still.
2:56 is slower ahah, i wish i could run a 2:56 min/km. I think what is missing is to complete the nike test is one of the fastest shoes that is the alphafly 1. I agree with you that the first vaporfly had a better lockdown (it was a bit tight for my big toe but better lockdown for sure)
I've just got my first pair of Alphafly 3's, ran a 2 miler in them yesterday to test them out. Doing a 7 miler on Sunday as part of my training for the Great North Run in September, would you suggest I wear them for the 7 miler to get used to them and then only wear them on race days following that?
These shoes do give you an edge for most runners of any level. However if you do even the slightest of the heel strike you will destroy them in no time, the heel area has almost no rubber protecting it from abrasion. And they're not cheap either. Also if you need a supportive shoe, one that will keep you heel more stable, the upper is extremely light and will not help in that area.
For me, i am intrigued how the Alphafly 3 sits at my feet, because when the production alphafly comes begin March, i'll buy a pair and see how they perform from my perspective.
be good to see these tests done across a range of running speeds/ability - may be good to rope in/torture the rest of the running channel hosts do the same time trial? Same qn Andy had on the AF3, I wonder if it really makes that much of a difference to a slow runner (like me).
I am a New Balanxe runner and have been happiest in their shoes through my ~5 years of running. I would love to try some of their supercomp shoes. Though the notion that now every regular non-pro runners need to buy a $250 pair of shoes for their races is not a trend I love.
Question for the Running Channel: How many runs should someone do in these super shoes prior to running a marathon? Should a person run one to two long interval sessions in the training block to get used to the shoe and make adjustments, or just one long run prior to the marathon?
Would be interesting to see the streakfly since it's made for shorter races, theoretically should win this 1k TT. If not much faster then might as well go for the other shoes for 5-10k races
I used to run only in New Balance shoes for years, unfortunately their new mash top material is failing apart for me. The last four (different) models of them lasted not a year of training. Their support was not helpful either, always saying the shoe was to big for me. I went for another brand now, this is not sustainable development for me.
I need everonye's help... I'm looking for a mid range shoe that does it all, but doesn't require a mortgage to buy. So far Adidas boston 12, Hoka Mach 5 seem to be standing out?
As a do-it-all shoe, it's hard not to recommend the Puma Velocity Nitro 2, or now the Velocity Nitro 3. They won't be great race shoes (unless maybe on a light trail), but they'll do everything else pretty well. The VN2 is cheap to begin with, on sale regularly, and probably will see some steep discounts soon as the VN3 rolls out. The VN3 will be a little more pricy, at least at first, but I expect Puma will discount it frequently.
There's something about nike running shoes i hate and i dont know why 🤷♂️ you mentioned the Vaporflys 2s being very responsive i find the it the opposite.
I'm kind of surprised at VF2 not being faster than AF2 for short distances. The VF2 are faster (but not as comfortable) for me. 🤷♂️ I hope I can get the AF3 on April 4th 🤞🏻, cool color too.
Exactly. No way the AF2 is faster than VF2 for short (5K/10K) all-out efforts. I have both and the Vaporfly is significantly faster-regardless of hype/marketing.
@user-kl3lg7tf3n-anx1ous Yeah, they're lighter and tip you forward aggressively. You rock forward just by leaning. Adios Pro 3's are fast, too, but different (without the tipping forward).
Because his test is note accurate, every pro runner is faster in the vaporfly 2 on short runs and only this guy is slower. Total joke test if you ask me😂
I'm not an expert but the general consesus I've seen is that yes they do. One thing to note though is that at 4 hr pace you probably won't be landing on the forefoot for the whole marathon, which supershoes often seem to be set up for to get the most out of them. The Alphafly 2s have good support at the rear and feel natural rolling forward from more of a heel strike when you're lower legs are exhausted, while still keeping a good pace
Great job! For me, there's none that would work, I expect. Having a very wide foot, splaying toes and a bit of an enlarged big-toe knuckle from arthritis, I probably couldn't even get these on (ugly sister vibes here!). I wish some of the manufacturers would acknowledge flipper-footed folk like me! Even Altra are turning their backs on me, with slimmer-fitting models... (never gonna be Cinders, heading for the ball)... X

I'd be interested to see a baseline using a standard running shoe over the same course.
yeah against something like Pegasus 40 which would be still within Nike brand and didn´t "offend" anyone
Def would be cool to have a control group. Also maybe a blind study although I wouldn’t know how one would do that aside from maybe a blind athlete
Maybe, in order to make Andy run a lot of time trials, we'd need a baseline from each brand of ordinary running shoe?
@@Wyldina😂👍
@drfunk1216 maybe blacked out shoes, dark shades and some earplugs if the noise from the shoes itself affect anything?

I love the carbon plate asics!
But Zoomx is the king of foams! Nike supershoe is therefore the most popular
Because Nike racing shoes are the best racing shoes?
The thing is that currently, marathon race shoes are highly personal. The Vaporfly line is the only one that works relatively consistently for everyone. Some people might do better in the Asics, Adidas, etc. but the Vaporfly is pretty much a safe bet.
All of those times are CRAZY! You don’t even look like you are running that fast 😮. Incredible!
14 seconds between 2 supershoes? :O what would be difference between stock daily trainer and one of these I wonder
What pace would you say is fast enough to gain an advantage in these shoes? My last 10k was at 4:53/km so a lot slower than the times Andy runs. Would I gain much from a pair of super shoes?
+1 on that, is there any benefit sub 50 10k, sub 2 hour half marathon etc.
100% with you on the Vaporfly 3. Bought them recently and not enjoying them. So much so I went back to the previous model. I'd love to try the Alphafly but a bit pricey for me.
I tested all of them. AF3 definitely is on 🔥. Best yet so far. I will be using the af 3 for my 3 marathons this year.
Just ordered I currently own vf2 and 3 (didn't like three)
so excited to try my alhpafly 3

1. Those time trails are the most intersting videos by far.
2. Its a bit sad you didnt include the Alphafly V1...
Although the AF1 is a great shoe, it doesn’t compare to the AF3
