Extremely impressive. It's natural for bigger voices to show wear and tear at this age, so even harder for lyric sopranos to preserve that purity and elegance in this repertoire. She still has those wonderful high piannisimi and sounds indelibly gorgeous after all these years.
@@jmiller05 - Mdm. Fleming knows what "Ausdruck" means. Maybe told by her teacher Marilyn Horne, who suggested also to learn German to understand the beautiful German Lieder written by Richard Strauss and others. - Heinz
Stupendously gorgeous - my dear Dad was an aficionado of classical music. He wanted this song sung by Renee at his funeral. We spent hours when he was dying trying to find the best rendition but nothing we located was completely right. I like to think he would have fully approved of this one.
Thank you. I found Fleming & Kaufman. But you should hear what was posted by Gervais Chouinard: "Korngold: Die tote Stadt - O freund... Glück das mir verbliebt"
Anyone who says - and many have - that the German language isn't beautiful, have never really listened to this song. I also cannot help but think this song is a good example of how much the Nazis cheated their own people of such deeply human music.
Es ist und war der kriegshass auch von unseren englischen freunden...die immer sagten...oh german. So. Gutteral.....oh Ja? How about. Throckmorrrton...ok
I first became aware of this aria when I heard Beverly Sills’s extraordinary rendition. Fleming’s voice is perhaps even more beautiful, if that’s possible.
Hi Mary, you are absolutely right. Reneé sings like an angel, and yes, her German is also very, very good. - Have you heard her singing the Irish song 'Tis the Last Rose of Summer'? There are several TH-cam videos .- I love both: Reneé's voice and this beautiful Irish song. Eckard
Es war die großartige Marilyn Horne, die Renée Fleming dringend riet Deutsch zu lernen um auch später als Lied-Sängerin Erfolg zu haben (Mahler, Richard Strauss). From arguably the greatest (and most unappreciated) opera written in the 20th C. A life that doesn't spend a decade emmersed in the music of Korngold is not a life properly lived.
THIS WHERE THE JOKERS IN HOLLYWOOD MISS THE BOAT. MS. FLEMING IS POISED, LOVELY AND SO GORGEOUS IN A VERY AVANT GARDE DRESS. THE DRESS IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND FRESH LOOKING, INSTEAD OF SOME JUNKIE, CHEAPLY MADE DESIGNER THING WITH VERY LITTLE FABRIC, AND FLESH EXPOSED, EVERYWHERE. SHE IS SO LOVELY AND SO ELEGANT IN THIS DRESS.
This makes me so emotional not only for the beauty of the music and singer but the fact that after 80 years, the music of a Jew can be performed on the very spot that Hitler swore in his Nazi recruits.
Danke sehr, wunderschon.
Danke
Fleming, superb as ever. But the notes mention Die Kathrin - totally wrong. This is from Die tote Stadt, Op 12, opera in 3 acts, composed when Korngold was an unbelievable 23. (as correctly given in the title line).
@@9546aw Sorry, but you are quite wrong. The first line of the notes state an excerpt from "Die Kathrin" and nothing else, nor is there any other listing of music, so that first line IS identifying the aria as coming from "Die Kathrin". It's easy to see how the error occured, as Fleming performs the "Die Kathrin" item in the same concert (and is available on TH-cam). Someone muddled the titles of the listings.
@@9546aw The music title immediately under the video correctly liosts the Tote Stadt excerpt. This wasn't orriginaly the case and a correction has been made. For which reason my early comment will be removed as it makes no sense. Thank you, I didn't know the correcrion had been made.
Great music, great performance, but listen with your eyes shut. As usual, an unmusical TV video director does his best to ruin the illusion with a constantly moving camera and hideous closeups of the singer's tonsils. When will these people learn that closeups of singers are a MISTAKE?
Still excellent for 60 years old!

Sublime but the duet is even more heart rending. The whole opera is a masterpeice.
Amazing that Korngold was only 23 when the opera premiered in Hamburg & Cologne

So incredibly beautiful ❤️ one I need to learn!!!
To learn it you need to master the criteria of the traditional Italian technique
I heard this in the film Aria and the images of this segment are fixed in my mind whenever I hear this: scenes of Vienna during a light snow fall.
Love Korngold. I cried so much, though.Renee is hard to beat.

Korngold is a largely neglected genius. Hollywood’s gain was Europe’s, and classical music’s, loss ❤️
