Trying to FIX: Faulty R/C Toy Job Lot + Extra Stuff (PART 1)

  • Hi, this 'trying to fix' video is PART 1 of a joblot of faulty radio controlled cars/boat/helicopter, some other faulty toys and an unusual telephone. I purchased the whole box from eBay for £21 ($27).
    Sorry there is no 'quick version' of this video.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    We were given a helicopter similar recently. I think it flew about twice before it got too boring. Love the Phone. That ambulance has good playability as it would fit playmobile , sylvanian animals and those small action figures like star wars and Robocop .dr octopus looks more like those collector's models they have in shops for adults that sell mint condition comics etc. My son had action man and it has changed for the bad since my brother had one, no uniforms to buy for them and they all are made to do something special these days and only that. Love all these toy mending videos.

    The phone repair part brings back memories of when I was an installer for VoIP subscribers of a broadband ISP. Back then most people didn't like the idea of having just 1 main phone connected to the modem. They wanted to retain the functionality of all their existing phone sockets in all the rooms, without running new cables. That meant if they didn't have an IP or had a concealed IP socket that required hacking, we would have to use both inner and outer pairs of the RJ11 cables to create a network that enables reliable VoIP call connections that you wouldn't otherwise be able to get if you were just using splitters. Faffing about all day, everyday with the wiring nearly drove me potty.

    I gutted the electronics out of a toy school bus today. It was supposed to have little figures go in it with magnets that corresponded to a location in the spot the figure sat. It was supposed to make different sounds with each figure. Water had damaged the circuit board so I just pulled all the wiring, speaker and batterys out. Kids can still use it as a rolling play toy. . My next project is a toy vacuum cleaner. It's fun watching you work on those toys. Glad you had better luck on some of yours.

      I wrote this before the segment on COPPA. I feel that the controversy about this is overblown. They're mostly targeting channels that 100% target kids, not channels that kids might theoretically watch. I do toy reviews, so I do get younger viewers like you, but my videos are primarily targeted at adult collectors.

The controllers and boat segment was interesting. I'm anticipating the rewire for L-R and F-R.

    Why not try to reverse the polarity of the motor and servo wires on the boat so the controls match what you are pressing on the controller? Or maybe open the controller up and just spin the D-Pads around?
    Also, maybe open up the 27MHz controller that came with it and find out why it’s not working, it might still be the correct controller for it.

    nice vid ...Like the hunt for red October at the end...lol... my son has several of the 'new bright' RC toys ...one of the best things you can do to these toys is to get rid if the plugs on the PCB and solder the switch & motor/servo wires directly to the PCB and coat the PCB in DCA SCC3 conformal coating ..don't coat the battery terminals of coarse....his toys have survived many a soaking...I've had to clean out the servos but at least the control PCB survives.

    I played around loads with these RC Toys I learned they are all based on a custom chip known as TX2 And RX2 Transmitter and Receiver modules respectfully.
    Their frequencies are set by a resistor and any can be easily matched provided the RF Carrier matches.
    From what I could work out the Transmitter "TX2" Chip needs a resistance value x3 greater than the "RX2" Resistance. So a 2K2 in the receiver would need around 6K8 in the transmitter.. (They're quite forgiving in the tolerance)..
    I urge you to grab their datasheet they allow for laser / IR data transfer excellent for hobbyists , basically enabling an 8 bit data bus to serial encoder / decoder to mess around with.
    Taught me the fundamental principles of Computer addressing, Bus transmissions Etc etc.

    The boats frequency is a common one. We used to sit in the car park watching kids get confused when their cheap toy cars would misbehave - it was because we were transmitting on channel 15 on the cb radio, it causes the toys to spaz out. 27.145 is slap bang in between channel 14 and channel 15 on a 27mhz CB set :)

    One thing that caught my attention on several of you vids, you use a lot of batteries (AA and AAA), but I never see you use rechargeable ones, since regular batteries a become waste one use, never consider spending some money in rechargeables?, I bought like 20 AA and 20 AAA like 3 years ago and never bought disposables again, just a thought. IMHO, they make a lot of sense money and waste-wise, and don't get me wrong, I'm no tree-hugger.

    • @LoneWolf5841-

      Rechargeable do save money but most disposable batteries are recyclable so less waste if you do that but still more money spent on them

    • @jasejj
      @jasejj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed for the most part but I find that using disposable batteries for most remotes is more cost effective and better for the environment, as rechargeable that are only charged up every couple of years tend to be done after only a few charges, at which point you may as well have just used alkaline which are easier to recycle than nimh.

    • @dergrunepunkt
      @dergrunepunkt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not wanted to go too long in my message so I didn't told very much, but yeah for things like remotes and specially wall clocks, regular batteries are fine since last a long time and won't loose charge, also there's a big diff between those types, rechargeable are 1.2v and not 1.5v like the regular ones.

    • @dergrunepunkt
      @dergrunepunkt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LoneWolf5841- IMHO, with the exception of metals and paper, recycling is more wasteful than not generating the waste in the first place, since you need lots of additional resources, just to get the waste to the recycle center, the energy you need to input to the waste to transform it into something different, that's usually of an inferior quality.

    • @dergrunepunkt
      @dergrunepunkt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasejj Nothing beats not generating waste in the first place. And, "everything" is recyclable, even your poo, the mere fact that manufacturers puts a "recyclable" logo does not mean that makes sense doing that, or anyone bothers on doing it, that's why there are countless landfills full of "recyclable material", a lot of marketing BS associated to that. Also with the exception of metals and maybe paper, recycling something is wasteful, produce inferior products.

    Hi Vince, I don't know how you do it, but you managed to let a person like me who's not interested in any kind of adventurous stuff at all feel like: "Oh my God, I hope they'l get the boat back." And every time it went further away I was like: "No no please, hope they manage to get it back." Great one Vince; I love toy boats, a few years ago, I bought myself a tin put-put boat, do you know what I mean? I don't have a bath (and even if there was a stream in my neighborhood, I wouldn't even think of trying my put-put boat there haha), so I put it in the kitchen sync. hahahaha Oh and by the way, I am glad I am not the only one doing the tongue test on batteries; if you cannot read a volt meter (just like me), then you have to do something like that... Or, what I also do sometimes is holding both wires of a scrap little motor against the battery terminals and listen to the speed the motor is turning and as long as I know which sound it's suposed to make at a given voltage, it works quite well.

    That tail rotor on the helicopter is to put the nose up/down. That is what makes it move forward and backward. I think you should check out why you can't control that rotor on its tail

    As usual, put a lipo pack on that boat, maybe a charging circuit and a plug to recharge it too. The antenna was meant to be left on the side of the plug in that hole - yeah, not a great insulation system though. Please... Straighten the antenna!

    Hi, the helicopter tail motor control s the forward and back motion. It is not decorative, the motor is concealed and the wire goes through the boom. The motor is probably burned out, it’s tiny! Cheers!

    I know this is old, but any time you need to strengthen a glue joint, wrap thread around the joint after using super glue, then coat the thread with super glue. This makes the repair stronger. I cannot remember where ai learned this, but I use that method on RC cars until I can get replacement parts. I found it lasts quite a long time. On a simple toy, that repair would outlast the toy. I find repairing toy grade toys frustrating. On the RC stuff, I like to upgrade to hobby grade parts. On toy boats, it works great! I pick and choose my projects. Some toys are not worth the effort.

    That moment when your stick broke was so funny, sorry mate xD it's like a metaphore of life. Also i hope that you gonna repair that original controller, and clean boat parts with IPA to push water from them. Jesus that moment when boat was running away been so dramatic, i literraly don't even blink my eyes to not miss something.

    just a heads up with the RC helicopter, the blade on the back is supposed to spin so you can move forwards or backwards. I had one and that's how mine worked
