I was tempted to enter (not that I'd win because my mixing is still suspect lol) but I'm literally waiting on a new computer to arrive and haven't been able to touch Ableton for weeks. And of course in that time I've come up with AND forgotten dozens of melodies haha.
So is it better for imaging to create a seperation between wet and dry? IE bussing… I always see the mix ratio on most plugins so I used to think it would be the same.
Just got Ableton not too long ago and needed to learn how to bus audio, so thanks a bunch. If you're using FL Studio, to bus you can route channels to a single mixer track, or route channels to *different* mixer tracks and then route *those* to a single mixer track
Awesome video. As someone who's been working in ableton for over 5 years, every time i see logic my brain just stops working. Especially with new concepts. Once i get these main concepts down, i think it would be cool to learn how to use that daw too.
I will purchase the master class as a birthday gift to myself this year:) excited. more importantly EDM tips family is amazing. cant wait to join the master class.
I'd love you to cover some more old school stuff. I've had Underworld's "Dark And Long" stuck in my head for ages, which if you analyse it is a very simple track in terms of elements but has a real knack of holding the listener's attention for long periods between changes (granted it's most effective when you're off your head but still an absolute banger while sober) and I've love to see a video about that, not that specific song necessarily but the art of arranging songs to keep the listener's attention without overwhelming them with noise and effects.
If I can get on this (ahem) BUS, all the songs Will mixes are effects-heavy compared to my stuff. How about some examples that aren't buried in reverb and delay? Not complaining. Still can't beat the knowledge for the price!
You always post the things that I am trying to improve, it’s super helpful. Cheers. Also, I should have entered the remix competition but I guess it’s a bit late to start 🤪
The answers to these questions are on the competition page, Syntrix: 1)deadline is 21st June (midnight PST); 2) link to be private on SoundCloud; 3) we will listen to all of the submissions after the 21st and will hold a live stream to listen and give feedback to as many as we possibly can.
Cool video once more I've been using the extra audio channel method as a pre-master for a little while as Ableton on my old i7 likes plugins spread over many channels. Also noticed the video didn't seem to match what you were saying about the Ableton drum rack 8 minutes mark(?). Anyway have a cool weekend and catch you again next week.
Will you please do a breakdown on a seven lions or Jason Ross style song with the broken beat style. If not can you direct me to a TH-camr that you recommend for this. I’ve been a huge fan of yours for so long and I know this isn’t your favorite style but you’re a great teacher and there aren’t many out there like you. Cheers
Hey, Millenial Markets, thanks for your kind words of support, really appreciate it! I will add this to my list but I have to admit, I get so many requests now, I simply don't have enough time to do every single one of them. Hope you understand.
Hey, Will! I LOVE your videos. I usually have no trouble translating any new knowledge to Cubase. But Logic isn't close enough in this case. It's gobbledy gook to me. I look forward to your next vid.
Maybe I missed it in the video, but why would you want to only send part of a signal to a bus (auxiliary bus)? Does that act like a dry/wet knob essentially?
yes. You set the FX bus to 100% wet and control the effects by the amount you send from each track. That way you don't have to CPU the FX on each track. (He explains it better. :) )
Great video and because thanks for sharing it😎. The only thing I struggle with is how quick you talk😵💫😬. But I’m from The Netherlands so that also count’s. Cool new track also you released which I’m streaming right now on Tidal😎.
Straight to the point with chapter marks. Thank you so much! Any pros/cons between cmd+G and creating a new audio track and route other tracks into it? I guess the latter allows for more flexibility in how you lay out and sort the channels in the UI?
For the types of Ableton busses, the Group one seems like it works very well for your bass and kick glue stuff, and I think the return one is good for reverb and delay but is the just a track with monitoring buss style useful for anything specifically or is it just better to use one of the other techniques?
Thanks a lot for your tips !! really helpful.. a question : If I'm not planning to create more than one level of hierarchy, could I just group similar channels ? Because that's what I always did and never thought about Grouping as the concept of busses... unless the idea is to create more than one level ? Usually I group Kick and Bass then this group goes to the Master...correct if I'm wrong but I see the concept of busses only applying here if I plan to send the signal of this buss ( Kick and Bass ) to another Buss instead of master....not sure if that makes sense. Thanks a lot !
Have you got a video on levelling, I think this is my biggest issue, I know it seems like a simple thing but it’s very hard to get right in the mix , and then furthermore what everything means as in rms lufs true peak ect
My question exactly! Should the Kick not be included in the drum bus? If you change the kick's track output to the Kick+Sub Bus, do you still 'send' some signal from the kick to the drum bus?
Great video’s and there very helpfull! So what would you suggest with an analog mixing table? Would you group the bass and kick in one channel as well? Thnx in advance!
Thanks, Will. I hardly ever want post-fader or pre-FX sends. Pre-fader post-FX is the norm for me but sometimes I like to route a send halfway through an FX chain. Easy in Reaper as every track is like a mini DAW but the more complex the routing, the more difficult it is to grok when you look at it later on. Sometimes I think it was designed by a programmer. 😀 Oh, that's right it was.
soooo, return tracks in Ableton, I am routing them to a Mixbus with everything else ofcourse (mixes then routed to master). But when I do this some sort of pre delay of all my return effects appear, so my reverb adds a longer pre delay then I've actually dialed in... tried routing my return tracks back to master out and everything sounds fine. But they now bypass my mixbuss channel and go straight to the master. Haven't figured this out yet so I'm just creating parallel fx chains with the same effects on my desired tracks instead. Takes longer time but at least it sounds correct. Any tips? cheers
I jalways thought a 'Bus' is when the channel receives a single instrument (eg. a kick and its distortion, reverb, etc.) and its dedicated FX, and a 'Buss' for bus summing channels for easy sidechaining (hence 'busS) 😅 I'll be sticking with my naming conventions though!
@@EDMTips Absolutely agree. I use FL myself from familiarity but nearly every time I see something being done in Ableton I think "I should switch". On this occasion I believe the visual mixer of FL objectively makes these tasks easier because you can see the signal chain and I surprised myself thinking that.
totally disagree with this. setting up a complex bussing hierarchy will give you much greater control depth and separation. how far you are willing to go depends on how far you are willing to go.

What do you want the lufs of the song to be at for these remixes
Im trying so hard to finish !! Lol
I think the bus-joke was funny hehe

And a great tip about FL Studio, lots of people will find it useful!
it is the basics for the final mix and it is something that must be done to give presence to the production, thanks for the tip
fast and objective
Cheers, glad you found it helpful! Anything else you're struggling with?
You can also use a Summing Track Stack in Logic in a similar way to the command G in Ableton. Menu > Track> Create Track Stack
Stop the Bus - I want to get on! - Great companion vid to the must-watch How to EDM in the Syle of series.

Plan Nine was my first ever artist name :) It then changed to The Plan then wandered off into other things
Thanks for adding some Logic in there. The new Ableton update has been really buggy with my M1 and I've been dabbling in Logic.
Great video as usual and this new track is 🔥🔥 with that 808 state(ish) vibe. So good!

you don't need a bus, you need a TAXI William, with gags like that!
is making a bus the same exact thing as feeding source tracks into one group in Ableton?
every Aux goes to the Master? it is not better to a Grp Channel or a Mix Bus to controll better the last Mixbus volumen?
how have i been producing music for 15 years, doing this as habit, and not realising this is what I've been doing the entire time.
