    for some reason i find the algae rather attractive in that aquarium.

      I don't think it's much of a problem (it removes the nitrates/nitrites of the fish waste) but putting actual plants in there would probably fix it.

      @@TokageSan I'd be interested to know too. I've read it's a struggle with months of acclimatization even with the "toughest" plants.
      And it will most likely still have a hard time growing.

    The puffer and the Goby's are some of my favorite fish. I love to watch saltwater tanks video's just because of them. I know the Goby and the shrimp have a bond and they work together. The Goby stands watch in front of the cave and protects the shrimp. I just love watching them. Thanks Dan for sharing.

    I have a figure 8 right around his size and let me tell you it’s the best fish I’ve ever kept. So personable! The friendliest fish I’ve ever owned hands down. It’s worth the extra effort it takes to own one of these fish but he’s 110% correct when he says algae grows insanely fast in these brackish/salt tanks.

    5 years later.. I love the tank with algae colors..
    But, if you haven't already experienced this...
    There are brackish seed shrimps and Amphipods (scuds in fresh) that will process unbeaten foods... And eat algaes.
    They also provide Butter bean with something to hunt after all day. 😁

    thank you for the video. your commentary about Butterbean's personality is helpful. i just picked up a figure 8 puffer after wanting to get one for a while. i call mine p.diddy or "puff". i keep him solo in his tank because i'm not sure how he will tolerate others in there with him. i have a young bristle nose pleco that i want to put in there every once in a while to clean up the algae already growing quickly in the tank after just 2 weeks. if they get along i may leave him in there with puff. i will just keep an eye on them at first to make sure no one gets hurt. i hope you have a video about keeping feeder snails. thanks again!

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pleco can't tolerate brackish water, which you should have Puff in. (I just got 2 Pea Puffers I'm calling "Puff" and "Stuff")

    What made you get a Figure 8 over a Green Spotted Puffer? Do they have similar SG requirements? Also, can I move a Figure 8 directly from (what I presume) is freshwater from the pet store to my already seasoned brackish tank? Obviously, I will look at all the numbers to make sure the tank meets the requirements, I'm just concerned about the "shock" to the fish (although I guess in the wild they can adapt from the oceans to the streams).

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. They don't need any acclimation time.
      GSP gets pretty big and needs to be in saltwater when they're full grown.

      This is a Specific Gravity of 1.008. I don't know how that relates to .26. Figure 8s need low end brackish between 1.005 and 1.010 ideally.

    Thanks for the videos and sharing your thoughts with the puffer. I have a small tank with five small green dotted puffer. The biggest one is only an inch and a half and it is so big and fat. They love to eat but one thing is that only this big one would get the belly dark easy. Maybe I also have five different types of fish in this tank as it happened to you previously? Anyhow mine puffers are also very gentle and people also wonder why other fishes have not been eaten until today. Now I also found out from you that I shouldn't come too close to the tank and I might scare them. Thx for sharing. Planning to get a three feets tank very soon. And more puffers!

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Java fern or moss will work. Marrimo moss balls will do fine. Anubias is said to be able to tolerate brackish, but I've never had luck. Even the java fern in my current brackish tank is stunted.
      This tank has floating water sprite (Indian fern) and Money Wort is the green plant with small round leaves. I think Penny wort will work too. If your tank is open top, there's lots of different grasses and marginal plants that will grow out of the tank.

      I've always heard that they can and will severely over eat, since they're so elastic.

    I'm sure you've worked this out by now, but there's more algae because puffers are messy eaters and the debris from rotting snail bits etc. causes an excess of nutrients in the water column. It may be a sign you're overfeeding, or that you're undercleaning :)

      Not necessarily true. Lighting as well will grow algae, a lot sometimes

    Hey Dan, I have a question for ya. so I want a figure 8 puffer fish. I heard that the fry can be in fresh water until they grow up and then transfer slowly into a brackish water. Is this true and would it be better for them in the long run? or should I just start the brackish water now before getting the fish. Right now my 20 gallon long is in its end cycle without salt in it. I will need to slowly add in the salt anyway for the bacteria to adjust. thanks so much! you have a beautiful puffer there .

    How do you go about getting a regular supply of snails? I don't think I've seen "feeder" snails for sale in my local shop.

      They are pest snails and the PetSmart near me collects them up when I come in. I also have a small 5 gallon tank that I use to breed them.

    Can you keep 2 figure 8 puffers together? Love puffers!!

      I'm not really sure to be honest. I always assumed not, but that's just a "better safe than sorry" guess.

      Yes you can, if the tank is big enough. Preferably introduce them together, and similar ages. However, puffers do have individual temperaments, so be prepared to separate or sell one. I've had 3 together no problem for years, and another pair didn't get along - I needed to separate them.

      I seriously doubt it ate flakes at the pet store. Try bloodworms, or snails. Freeze dried krill will probably work too.

    Hey dude nice fish, I’m actually looking to get one myself here soon and i was wondering what kind of tank mates you recommend for a Figure 8

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bumblebee gobies, live bearers, or any other brackish fish that will not get too big for your tank. Keep in mind that some puffers can be aggressive towards other fish. In my case, the other fish stressed the puffer out so I had to reduce the number in the community.

    I just picked up a figure 8 puffer. Can I use standard aquarium salt or do I need to use marine salt to bring the water into the brackish range?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to use marine salts.
      Aquarium salt doesn't make water brackish, just salty.

    Really cool fish is there any fresh for freshwater?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are, but they usually get very large, like the Fahaka. The Dwarf Malbar (Pea Puffer) is a very small freshwater Puffer though.

    Just as a reference, how long is your puffer in this tank, and how long is the shrimp? Great fish btw 👍

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The puffer is about 3 inches total, and shrimp are hard to tell since they curl, but I'd say inch and a half-ish.
