@@TokageSan I'd be interested to know too. I've read it's a struggle with months of acclimatization even with the "toughest" plants. And it will most likely still have a hard time growing.
Great video. Beautiful tank. Cool voice-over. And then of course there is Butterbean; I reckon it is impossible to not just LOVE this sweet guy! Thank you sir, and B-Bean for this inspiring clip!
The puffer and the Goby's are some of my favorite fish. I love to watch saltwater tanks video's just because of them. I know the Goby and the shrimp have a bond and they work together. The Goby stands watch in front of the cave and protects the shrimp. I just love watching them. Thanks Dan for sharing.
I have a figure 8 right around his size and let me tell you it’s the best fish I’ve ever kept. So personable! The friendliest fish I’ve ever owned hands down. It’s worth the extra effort it takes to own one of these fish but he’s 110% correct when he says algae grows insanely fast in these brackish/salt tanks.
Wow what a beautiful looking Figure 8! His color is really vibrant. I was leaning towards a GSP for my new tank set up, but he's making me reconsider...
Oh my God i can't believe that he's friends with the shrimp. He is so cool he moves like a helicopter. Yea Butter Bean is my favorite and you have a lot of cool fish. Not an easy pick....an Sqeeker.
Great color coordination in the tank! And what a puffer! That's a fat boy - great colors. I really want to get into these guys in the next year. Cool vid!
Well hello there Butterbean! I love the way he uses his fins to navigate the tank, he is SUCH a handsome boy who has more personality than any fish I've ever seen (except "Porky", may he Rest in Fishy Peace)! I never get tired of seeing him do his thing, maybe some time you could set him to music of some kind?("Octopus's Garden" by the Beatles comes to mind) Again, thanks for posting this!
I've had my eyes open for them ever since I got the first batch. They all grew old and died before I could bolster the group. now I'll start with a new group when I find them again.
5 years later.. I love the tank with algae colors.. But, if you haven't already experienced this... There are brackish seed shrimps and Amphipods (scuds in fresh) that will process unbeaten foods... And eat algaes. They also provide Butter bean with something to hunt after all day. 😁
He is absolutely adorable!! Is Butterbean crushing the shells? Wow.. it's very cool watching him. What else do you feed him? Great share! I found it super interesting.
Blood worms and freeze dried krill. They need the shells from shrimp and snails to keep their teeth from overgrowing (similar to how a rodent has to continuously wear it's teeth down)
Amazing fish dude, you are a real storyteller... great mix for an awesome video. And btw all your videos are really incredible. Big hugs from southamerica.
Amazing looking Figure 8 Puffer- he looks so healthy and happy! How big is he and how much bigger will he get? I'm debating between a Figure 8 and a GSP- I want a fish that gets a decent size... I am aware of the brackish conditions they both (especially the GSP) will need... Thanks!
The GSP will need marine water by adulthood, whereas the F8 will spend it's life in brackish. He's about 3 inches now and almost ready to move into his new 40 breeder tank.
thank you for the video. your commentary about Butterbean's personality is helpful. i just picked up a figure 8 puffer after wanting to get one for a while. i call mine p.diddy or "puff". i keep him solo in his tank because i'm not sure how he will tolerate others in there with him. i have a young bristle nose pleco that i want to put in there every once in a while to clean up the algae already growing quickly in the tank after just 2 weeks. if they get along i may leave him in there with puff. i will just keep an eye on them at first to make sure no one gets hurt. i hope you have a video about keeping feeder snails. thanks again!
The pleco can't tolerate brackish water, which you should have Puff in. (I just got 2 Pea Puffers I'm calling "Puff" and "Stuff") th-cam.com/video/_k2LDaP_-ns/w-d-xo.html
What made you get a Figure 8 over a Green Spotted Puffer? Do they have similar SG requirements? Also, can I move a Figure 8 directly from (what I presume) is freshwater from the pet store to my already seasoned brackish tank? Obviously, I will look at all the numbers to make sure the tank meets the requirements, I'm just concerned about the "shock" to the fish (although I guess in the wild they can adapt from the oceans to the streams).
Awesome tank and puffer! I'm interested in setting up a brackish tank like this with my 20 gallon long. Do you have any videos that show how to set one up for a Figure 8 Puffer?

You said its in brackish, what salinity? And also do you think they can be slowly acclimated to .26 salinity? Ive heard the spotted can be but 8s look cooler. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the videos and sharing your thoughts with the puffer. I have a small tank with five small green dotted puffer. The biggest one is only an inch and a half and it is so big and fat. They love to eat but one thing is that only this big one would get the belly dark easy. Maybe I also have five different types of fish in this tank as it happened to you previously? Anyhow mine puffers are also very gentle and people also wonder why other fishes have not been eaten until today. Now I also found out from you that I shouldn't come too close to the tank and I might scare them. Thx for sharing. Planning to get a three feets tank very soon. And more puffers!
Are you sure about them being brackish? I have had some conversations alot abot that with people. Me on the "Yes they are brackish" and other people, inlcuded a guy a know that kept 2 Figure Eight for 4 years in freshwater.
Long term experience has shown that at least mine started doing poorly in brackish water after a few years, so I reduced the salinity and it got better. I've not got the salinity at 1.002 (just below brackish) and he's doing great.
Hey Dan, I have a few questions: Do the Tetraodon biocellatus has Spikes to inject poison, is he dangerous for humans? How big is you’re pufferfish currently and how big can this species become?
No, they don't have spikes and are harmless to humans (possibly toxic if you ate one?). They only get about 3 inches, and Butterbean is full grown now.

Bumblebee gobies, live bearers, or any other brackish fish that will not get too big for your tank. Keep in mind that some puffers can be aggressive towards other fish. In my case, the other fish stressed the puffer out so I had to reduce the number in the community.
for some reason i find the algae rather attractive in that aquarium.

I don't think it's much of a problem (it removes the nitrates/nitrites of the fish waste) but putting actual plants in there would probably fix it.
I let it in my aquarium because it’s not out of control and it looks natural

Aquarium salt doesn't make water brackish, just salty.

There are, but they usually get very large, like the Fahaka. The Dwarf Malbar (Pea Puffer) is a very small freshwater Puffer though.
