DIY PLASTER CLAY CRACKING! Making More Satisfying Viral ASMR for my TikTok

This was a video I've wanted to make for so long! Back in summer there were lots of clay cracking clips on Kwai & Instagram that looked like plaster. I figured it must have been gypsum plaster / plaster of paris. Once mixed with water, you have 5-10 mins to work with it and it will harden in 30-40 mins. I greatly prefer this over nail polish for clay cracking because it dries faster, is much cheaper and there is absolutely no smell.

PLASTER CLAY CRACKING
1) Make your design using paper clay. The shape should be at least the size of your palm.
2) Mix plaster according to package instructions. In the video I used a brand that was 3:1, though plaster of paris is often 2:1!
3) Add food colouring to if desired
4) Pour it over the clay and shake vigorously to create a thin, smooth layer
5) Add sprinkles or glitter if desired
6) Check that the excess plaster is not forming any puddles, move your piece around if this happens
7) Leave to dry for 30mins and paint on final details if needed
8) CRACK!

i've never personally tried this, but a possible nail polish alternative is duraclear varnish from americana, or a similar polyurethane-based varnish. it's a little flexible, and dries to touch in a few minutes, but has no fumes and is much cheaper than nail polish. it's clear but you could paint over it with paint if you wanted. hope this helps!
I like that idea! The plaster just doesn’t seem as satisfying as the nail polish, but that’s so expensive and time consuming. So a sort of varnish similar to nail polish might have the same quiet effect!

If you have an extra cookie rack you could put it on top and the plaster will drip through to reduce the mess. Then put a tray below the elevated cookie tray

@Sinead Lemonade Productions yes, but coppa states that it is illegal for any minor under the age of 13 to be on platforms like youtube, Instagram tictok ect. On TH-cam it doesn't matter what age you put in because they found a way around that. Let's say that you put your age in as 18 and you watch gaming videos, some of macaroons old videos and some other random videos targeted to a pg audience, TH-cam's new algorithm picks up on what you watch and compairs that to everyone else who's watched the same videos as you then depending on how much content that you watch that has been deemed 'for kids' you will be counted as a child by TH-cam and the content you watch will end up getting restricted

I actually use plaster of Paris a lot for my art class since I’m in a sculpting class. If you don’t have any art stores nearby you can very early buy small containers of plaster of Paris in Home Depot or almost any hardware store.
Also for the mixing part in my class we actually put the water in and then the plaster to make it much smoother and we mix it with our hands since we make big batches.

This will definitely improve my skills for clay cracking. i was told before to just dip in the model into the plaster, but now i realize, compared to your models, my outer shell for mine was WAY too thick and hard to crack. now i know you have to pour it instead, thank you so much again!

This was cool! Just a quick pointer from an artist who works with plaster- never wash plaster down your sink. It can destroy plumbing! I use a special flexible bowl to mix plaster, so I can just bend it to clean it off once it hardens, and throw away the dry pieces.
A towel under the plaster when cracking it will probably help better than a tablecloth. The thicker material combined with the texture absorbs the sound better, plus it cushions the fall if you accidentally drop the piece, so it won't just explode into chunklets before you can crack it.
This is such a satisfying trend!

Try mixing plain flour and water until you get a dough consistency then leave it for ten minutes then crack it! 😊

I experimented with something similar and had a piece of foam core down. The ASMR of the pieces hitting the cardboard was actually quite satisfying and not echo-y.

Edit: when pouring the plaster I would probably place the piece on an elevated wire rack so it drips down instead of having to move it from the puddle

I already love clay and the sound of smushing and kneading it is really appealing. These cracks from the nail polish or plaster ..really remind me of stuff like popping bubble wrap or my finger knuckles and even a crackling fireplace. So combining the those sounds really ticks my relaxation boxes. 😂
