This was such an enjoyable review to watch! I love this guys sense of humour. Also love seeing little glimpses of England and the cold weather (cold weather loving Australian here). Also so fascinating that the car is inspired by diamonds and the build quality is top notch because it insulates well.
I drove a rental hybrid C-HR 4000km around Spain and Portugal during October and November this year. The car had 10000km on the clock and was a delight to drive. A funky little car with good styling and plenty of power. I was getting 5.1l/100km fuel efficiency, which. compared to my 2014 Camry 2.4l petrol with 11l/100km is quite amazing, albeit mostly highway. The seats are worth a special mention - I could easily drive 3 or 4 hours without any discomfort in my backside compared to the Camry, which has terrible seats only good for maybe 2 hours. The worst and most dangerous feature, however, was the adaptive cruise control! Together with Lane assist, it pretty much takes the pain out of highway driving, so much so that there is a sensor to warn that your hands are no longer on the wheel, and disengages if continued for too long. What's really dangerous for someone like me, who has got used to the "manual" cruise control that needs to be engaged and disengaged by the driver, is that the system on the C-HR overrides the accelerator pedal. If overtaking a truck and we are both in the same inside lane, the system sees the truck ahead and slows the car down by itself progressively as you get closer. Now move into the adjacent lane to overtake, and it once again speeds up to whatever speed was set. Moving into the other lane well ahead of the truck seems to be the way to go, but you then run the risk of pissing off other drivers coming up way faster behind you. Of course, the system isn't infallible, and sometimes the camera controlling it slams on the brakes without warning at 120KPH while overtaking. the real danger for someone like me who is not familiar with the car (no manual of course) is that I'm no longer in charge. If I overtake a truck and the sensor camera overreacts, the accelerator (gas) pedal was shut down and actually collapsed on the floor, until it reset itself. This happened several times and I lost faith in the car. A shame because otherwise a great little car as said previously, except that its attempt at safety features backfired. I could not find a way to turn the feature off.
When the CHR parked for automatically for you if in adjusting to the space it went forward Q.what if a car was coming from your right or left, would the CHR stop to avoid a collision?
I have the 1.8L self-charging design spec of this car, and overall, it's been a very positive experience. It's incredibly comfortable to drive, and 500 miles in, I've averaged 60 mpg (UK). However, there are a few quirks that I've noticed along the way. For starters, syncing trip data to the app requires you have to be stationary in park and click the privacy screen three times, otherwise, the trip data gets lost! The motor that drives the wipers are super noisy (as is the boot opening and closing), and the rear screen tends to fog up easily, which can be frustrating, especially considering there's no rear wiper. We've had so much rain in the UK lately, yes it does need a rear wiper! Visibility out of the rear is rather limited, and the reversing camera's in the design spec has poor resolution nothing better than my previous Juke. Another annoyance is the constant beeping - whether it's for going just a mile over the speed limit or changing speed zones, the alerts can get a bit excessive. The major crash alert has come on a couple of times, when there's no way I was going to crash - just driving normally during busy school runs. There's quite a few other minor annoyances. Sometimes randomly the alarm sounds for 5 seconds when locking the car. Every other drive it sends the app an alert to check the rear seats and if you turn off the alerts for those darn bleeps, it's reset the next time you start the car. When reversing, the screen does not always show the radar when approaching objects you could hit. When a couple of passengers are in the rear, the 1.8L engine feels like it struggles and boy does it growl, like driving a Ferrari growl. Other than that the 1.8 engine is fine esp in busy town driving.
Those constant audible alerts, especially the one that bleeps when you are 1mph over the speed limit, which is probably, bearing in mind speedos over read by a couple of mph, on average, is actually still under the speed limit, is enough to put me off buying one. It would drive me absolutely loopy. In fact, since all cars have them now, I probably won’t be buying a new car for many years hence, I’ll just wait until my current car gets ropy and then buy one of the last model year cars that DOESN’T have it fitted.
Just rented one for a month in Germany. Good point is the esthetic, and the totally seamless transition between electric (not a lot of it) and gasoline engine. The economy is quite good, about 50 euros for 600 km (in Germany). But… From the driver standpoint, the CVT is a huge pain, it’s totally basic and if there’s any up and down in the road the RPM go up in an extremely annoying way. It feels like you are driving an old Fiat 500, if you know what I mean, even though there’s actually some power (Btw, I’m pretty familiar with CVT, within my vehicles there’s a Subaru Forester, and that CVT is a much better thing, night-and-day better). The gear selector seems standard, but it isn’t, you need to do a kind of a left-and-right dance to go from P to D and R. In a month I never got it completely right, I had to always hunt around to make it work. And the *beep* at every speed signal !!!! Triple *beep* if you dare to go over the limit by one kilometer… Huge, huge, huge annoyance that after the initial amazement gets old very soon if you are driving countryside… I had rear passengers for a week, and they all lamented a very high noise and most importantly a very bad outside visibility. The cute exterior lines evidently didn’t consider the consequences… So, all in all I was happy to have this car, worked reasonably well for the month I needed it. But I would NEVER buy one, no matter what…
Currently driving one brand new hire car . One the gearbox will keep reverting to eco mode , on shut down and have to select normal each time I start it, Apparently there's a mode select button for cruise control and speed limiter , where is It? .One mile an hour over the speed limit and there's a quiet chime starts . How do you turn that off ? The steering wheel is not leather. Feels very plastic. Steering far to light, and the drivers seat will not go down far enough. Feels like you are sat on it not in it . By the way I am only 5.10
Preordered a CHR due to come in December. Just cancelled it last Saturday because it's very claustrophobic in the back. Everything js very compact. If you like that. 😅
Agreed on the claustrophobia aspect of the rear seats. I think they could mitigate the effect by using lighter upholstery. It’s so dark in the back. Love the divided cockpit design upfront though. No complaints upfront. The C-HR is top of my list with one caveat, the boot space may be a problem for certain scenarios. Airport and/or tip runs.
It’s a shame it’s over inflated in price I don’t know what Toyota have done Lexus was SUPOSE to be the premium expensive brand yet Toyotas are now 30k upwards for decent spec and car
But has it a updated battery as the the older C-HR dies to 8amps if left for a few days left for a fortnight definitely Reason big electronics small 12 v battery Well has it in the new one !
Very tired of the leading deals being based on 5000 miles and high deposits. Very unrealistic. Same recipe for anything you buy these days, the lead price is nothing like the real one.
Right when the CHR finally becomes interesting Toyota discontinues it for the North American market and brings in the horrifically boring Corolla Cross. What's wrong with Toyota 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Seems to be the perfect car for people who don't really like driving. But that they still need a car to get from "A" to "B" because, let's face it. Who likes using the bus? 🤔😬 _However._ And this isn't just about this car or Toyota, but applies to all car makers. *When is someone going to make a "tracked (Not a wheeled/tired!) hatchback" to cope with all the £¬(%ing huge potholes we have to endure on the terrible British roads today?*
Toyota and other Japanese auto companies are working on hydrogen powered cars where in You have a huge tank of saline free water tank at home which produces hydrogen from electrolysis process .Cheapest and efficient.
I will EASILY give you 10 reasons NOT to buy one: 1. the car sounds like a tin can when closing a door. I f you fancy tin cans this is the car for you. 2. passenger side dash is so badly designed that makes entering cumbersome without any real benefit. 3. the glove box simply can not be opened (there is no room !) when there is a passenger sitting in front. 4. The forward extension of the front door internal facia may look nice to the eye but is so flimsy that you should better not touch it at all. 5. Toyota has made so many 'cutbacks' to save money that make no sense because they do not save more that 100 bucks (no pockets behind front seats, no arrangements in the boot, etc) 6. overall quality of materials is FAR behind the competition, no matter what the 'reviewers' say. 7. graphics on the driver screen are sooo outdated that start giving on your nerves after a while... 8. no central armrest on the back seats, not even as an option... really??? on a 40k car? 9. soundproofing is simply non existent 10. the fact that handling has improved from previous CHR does NOT mean that it is good - comparison statements is a gimmick interviewers use to avoid the actual truth, be very cautious when you hear them... . The ONLY advantages of this car are its external design (many cudos on that) plus the efficiency and reliability (you do PAY for that multi year warranty, most of it is actually insurance you know...) of the powertrains (although they are not the best when it comes to smoothness or response...). ALL else (including price...) are simply BAD.
Totally agree with most if the above. Much more cheaply made than the original CHR, poor passenger and luggage space, horrible dark all black plastic interior, my 2016 Yaris is nicer. Triumph of style over function. Lots of Preregistered or low mileage short lease ones at dealers at big discounts off new - no surprise! Really wanted to like the new CHR but just too flawed.
It doesn’t have a CVT Transmission. It’s described as an e-CVT only because is mimics a CVT gearbox. There’s actually NO gearbox. No, I’m not joking. I've owned the first generation C-HR when it was released over 6 years ago, and have never once used the rear wiper at all, as I find it unnecessary. I have driven it plenty of times in the rain too.

Had my GR for a month and a half, love it, oh and I’m a 60+ female who perfectly understands how a hybrid works😅 this is my third C-HR.
U should sell me one. Three is a lot for a lady
Were you trading each one in for another one?
How is side and rear visibility for you?
Why oh why do you people always review the top of the range model. Why not review the ones real people buy.
I agree.
Honestly I’m looking for a review on the design spec 😭
God my 20204 Toyota CHR design spec a week ago! Love ittt😍
💯
Because this is how business works. How dumb can you be

My favorite car ❤ C-HR
Really enjoyed your insights! The C-HR sounds like a stylish option! 🚗✨👍
Loved my ch-r had hybrids for last 15 years now love them all Toyotas PRIUS ,AURIUS and now a RAV4
When the CHR parked for automatically for you if in adjusting to the space it went forward Q.what if a car was coming from your right or left, would the CHR stop to avoid a collision?
Yes
Great review, preferred it over the carwow review because you mentioned some features that Matt didn’t such as that acceleration safety feature

Makes the car worthless

Stunning car. Loads of cool features. The GR spec is gorgeous, I love the two tone colour and of course you’ll never go wrong with a Toyota.
We have had toyot for years tried a lot of different makes but the chr new chr is the best ever❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊wow
It parks itself omg I’m getting one .

Lovely review. Thank you.
I like that you can split the color and do wraps and so on
Such a delight to watch, I want to owm this
GR Is my favourite C-HR Trim, great review as well 😊
This guy is funny !
I saw that in the EU there’s a AWD version, do you know if the UK will be getting that at some point?
How is the milage?
It's a shame that here in Australia, we do not get the 20 inch wheels as standard on the top spec GR model. We have to settle for 19 inch wheels.
19 and 20 inch wheels are just styling but you sacrifice comfort. Stick to 18.
Thanks for the humourous review 😅 Love the car, want it as a second pair of wheels in the house ❤ Toyota all the way for safety
Cool car ! Great price 👍
Really good review and really nice car
Would an electric version
Looooooove it!!!
no price??? how is that the first thing in the list that you completely missed?
When it come US?
It won't.
CHR has been discontinued in the USA.
It's not, and I'm sad about it.
When might it be available in the USA? Do you see how much better it sounds when you learn to write correctly?
It’s Coupe High Riding
Coupe High Rider
When its coming to india it will be a great choice to buy
You have Suzuki fronx
toyota has been losing their minds when it comes to pricing of the new generation of models
Preordered a CHR due to come in December. Just cancelled it last Saturday because it's very claustrophobic in the back. Everything js very compact. If you like that. 😅
Yes it's just a small car...
Airport and/or tip runs.
honestly this is my top car that im looking at. Currently driving 2006 tiny skoda fabia hatch so in terms of space this would be massive upgrade. :3
It’s a shame it’s over inflated in price I don’t know what Toyota have done Lexus was SUPOSE to be the premium expensive brand yet Toyotas are now 30k upwards for decent spec and car
You sound like Richard Hammond. Nice review, but negatives would have been appreciated.
Does any one have any problems with driving space .it's to small at the front can't relax my knees
Compact- High Ride!
But has it a updated battery as the the older C-HR dies to 8amps if left for a few days left for a fortnight definitely
Reason big electronics small 12 v battery Well has it in the new one !
As long as run it for 1hr once a week it will be fine. Do get people go on holiday though
❤❤❤
Ridiculously expensive than a larger SUV RAV4 hybrid is madness.
I am going to get one on Motability
cool design but the inside is realy tight space...i have more room in my Yaris 2022
That aluminium on the seats is actually plastic. Nothing wrong with that though. Its a beautiful car.
The back seats looked so claustrophobic.
Shocking mpg...my clio hybrid always gets 62+ mpg
It's too bad that Toyota doesn't offer auto parking and ambient lighting at lower trim levels.
Wow 41mpg, no space and will cost you £11k for the privilege... so you are paying for the toys then?
Yes it is possible to change the EQ, you just haven't found it 😂
Hit me
Very tired of the leading deals being based on 5000 miles and high deposits. Very unrealistic. Same recipe for anything you buy these days, the lead price is nothing like the real one.
Hang on…..what was number 1 ?
lol the price - "we will come back to that in a minute... but next number 2"
@@leasingdotcom oh
So there’s not 10 things then?
Anyway, good video, good presenter
CHR looks good, but not in the two-tone paint. Single tone is fine, two-tone looks weird.
Right when the CHR finally becomes interesting Toyota discontinues it for the North American market and brings in the horrifically boring Corolla Cross. What's wrong with Toyota 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Over priced price for Toyota chr
There is no wonder insurance premiums are astronomical! This car will be a nightmare for any body and mechanical repairs!
No more so that any other vehicle
it’s a Toyota 😂
Surprisingly the bumpers come in more pieces than before so it’s cheaper to repair then the last gen CHR which had a solid plastic bumper
Rear seats and boot is too small

41.3 mpg, thats rubbish. I get 56 out of my Honda Vezel and have more room and luggage capacity
I don’t understand this, I bought the 2.0 litre version in January and constantly achieving 60 mpg
Wrong info. Jbl have eq, u dont foundit
And sysrem is very good
yes it is..where is the setting please send link or screenshot please @@ddd1563
A friendly advice stay away from this car , it has many issues ,
Always prefer the Japan made toyota models
Uea what means: ugly, expensive and like an appliance
$60+k in Australia 🇦🇺 😮
Overpriced and no rear wiper
CVT gearbox and no rear wiper.....So a no from me
E-CVT, not CVT. And you have a rear camera on the mirror to compensate for the lack of rear wiper.
Rear window angle just like a sedan, why would u need a wiper for?🤷♂️
It doesn’t have a CVT Transmission. It’s described as an e-CVT only because is mimics a CVT gearbox. There’s actually NO gearbox. No, I’m not joking. It has a planetary gear set mated to a power split device. Ergo, the transmission is completely step less and ultra reliable. Zero issues expected. There’s no mechanical reverse gear cogs - reverse is accomplished via the joystick gear lever - and the electric traction motors reverse polarity and push the car backwards. Does this voodoo magic / alien technology (reverse engineered at Area 51) scare you? It shouldn’t. It’s ultra reliable. The same tech has been in use in my 2008 2nd Gen Prius Tspirit. It still runs flawlessly after 15+ years using the ORIGINAL drivetrain. Now at 154k miles. It’s a Toyota - not a Ford Eco boost. You have nothing to fear.

His loss!!!
Nissan juke teckna plus for me
Fuel economy is not good……
What economy are you referring to in the uk in about 7 degrees for 20-30 mile drives I get about 70 mpg
That's just a really expensive Kona 😂
That’s really a ugly car…..the new kona
The one reason not to buy one is that they are grotesquely ugly imho of course thats probably why they are no longer sold in the states.
