rather than talking to guitar store employees, perhaps you should talk to people who went to school for this stuff . . . (Or people who are in bands that are seasoned veterans, which I assume is the case with this guy, haven't researched him yet . . .) I went to school, so I know what's going on when I twist a knob on a pedal or amp, generally speaking . . . (I studied audio engineering . . .) That makes videos like this the delicious icing on the cake. You and anyone else can feel free to pick my brain, if you like. I love talking audio, I can do it all day. I think the thing with Andertons (and comparables), is they are a store, first and foremost, so . . . You know, there's a lot of time spent on shmoozing and coercion . . . I could watch "that pedal show" all day long, if I had the time . . .

loopers are fun but useless as an amp simulator you don't use them in gigs and plug your guitar into your sound card of your pc open your studio use the multi tracker play a riff loop it for as long as you want even hrs add drum loops bass loops ect from your studio that match your riff next track play and record next riff to loop then next track and next track then open up cab or fx processors change the sounds with every clone of every amp or pedal till you happy with each track loopers cant do that but cost an arm in a leg think 10mins record time at most for a looper if your starting out recommend line 6 spider amp for £100 new 30£ used less then a Chinese single pedal and it gives you an amp and all your main pedals included crunch metal phazer reverb tremlo delay fuzz chorus ect and tones are good for starting out and records well straight into your sound card for all the mony you can spend on trying out shoes every ones ears are not same like head phones you can spend for ever looking for that that sound that dosnt exsist and when you sell a pedal to try another you get a fraction of what you paid for it or it dosnt sell however loopers can be used in simple riff bands that need an angus or a rick neilson a show man jumping around with both hands up in the air or flipping guitars over their head like rick while the guitar is still playing riffs in the volcal world known as lip singing in that case you need a looper or if you have an alcoholic guitar player or bass player who cant put his drink down then you need a looper

This setup is alright if you're already in a rock or metal band, If you are just starting off the first pedal you should get is a looper pedal that will allow you to put in a rythem section and practice you're scales and patterns over chord progressions
or play through backing tracks in youtube and save a couple hundred bucks?

Caylor Sirk Playing live a tuner is a must. Nobody wants to hear you tune so mute your signal while tuning if that's how you want to do it. Secondly nobody wants to wait while you tune. The tuner allows you to tune on the go and fast, if your really good you can 5une while playing and no one will ever know. Tuner pedals also act as a "noise gate" so to speak by muting your guitar between songs. Does every guitarist need a tuner pedal? not really. If I had to pick only five it would be in no particular order. Phase, delay, noise gate, wah, overdrive.
I think you're missing the point here... When recording into a looper, you'll hear all your mistakes directly, speeding up the learning process a lot. Moreover, when writing music, it's a great tool to check whether a certain riff/chord progression will work nicely with a solo or not.
You don't need a super fancy looper for these things, 100-150 euro/dollar gets you there.
Can't agree with #1, *myself*, I wouldn't say someone ISN'T a guitar player without owning one of those. I did for YEARS until I got one for free from a friend, but I still never use it, hah.
I would say my top 4 are:
1. EQ - these can shape your tone in front of the amp or in the loop. Great for when your sound guy just isn't on his game or when your amp's rotary controls centre around a frequency that isn't what you wanted to boost/cut. You can also clean up your tone by cutting the lows out since you probably don't need past 80hz anyway, you hip-hop artist, you!
2. Delay - These can make your solos sound dramatic in the loop (or in front) Breathe some space into your leads! They're also good for song creation. Lot's of riffs can come from the creative sound options in a multi-effect reverb. Add 2 for differing combos of delay effects and get psychedelic!
3. I agree with the phaser/chorus option. Sounds awesome, that's it. Adds depth to chords and cleaner playing to boot.
4. Compression - Compression can do a few things, but most notably is used to minimize the transients of your playing, especially when clean strumming.
5. Wild Card - Tremolo - A trem can do wacky and strange things, especially if you have a tap-tempo enabled model. I think they're cool and I'll stick by that. Not something you wanna overdo, but that's why it's a wild-card.

The only 4 pedals I need is for a badass metal sound 1- Overdrive 2- metal distortion 3- Equalizer 4- Noise gate . Of course they will all be "on" at the same time when I play. Effects Fx pedals are only optional.

Modulation and delay/reverb effect tend to be more controllable when used in a good effects loop. Delayed distortion is generally more pleasing to the ear than distorted delay.
I agree totally. My 4 are Wah/Uni-Vibe/Delay/Distortion.

Nice video. I know many people will probably disagree, but I've always thought a noise suppressor is an essential pedal. It keeps everything quiet and is versatile. You never know what room, electricity, etc. is like so it's good to keep things quiet when you're not playing. That makes the music more enjoyable to the audience. I just take out the hum and am good to go. Otherwise, I agree with you 100%. Nice videos and very informative. Keep em comin.
What noise suppressors do you recommend/use? I've been using the TC one and it works well once you get it dialed in. But at some point, I probably just need to shield my guitar more and try to clean/filter power, I guess?
guitar-kitchen yes. All of those things are helpful. I use an ISP Decimator and put it before all my distortion pedals.
This is hands down, one of my favourite gear videos ever.
There are so many overcomplicated pedal setup videos out there but this is refreshingly demystifying.

What about a tuner pedal?
+Bob Oliver Sure why not, It is always good to have a tuner. A lot of guitar players are using clip on tuners so that is why I left it out. But you can never go wrong with a tuner pedal.
+Phillip McKnight I love those headstock tuners, and relied on them when I used to be all about going straight into the amp. Lately I've gone back to having a pedal board (straight into the PA using a Carl Martin Rock Bug... I went from no pedals in front of the amp to no amp after the pedals. LOL), and one really nice thing about a tuner pedal is it also doubles as a cut switch, so if you have to change guitars or something you won't see the sound tech glaring at you.
+Phillip McKnight Honestly, at gigs, better to use a tuner pedal. The background noise sometimes messes up the clip on tuner, not to mention the tuner pedal works like a killswitch as well :D

I thought about that too, but then I feel like tuner pedals are pretty much near a requirement as you can get and so are even a step above 'must-have'. I actually liked that Philip McKnight didn't add a tuner because saying it's a must have is nearly redundant.
One of my fly rigs primarily for church services and some sessions consist of :Guitar into HOTONE mini Wah, Volume, expression pedal into EHX Mod 11 pedal, OCD OD, Revv G3 Dist, Keeley Cavern Reverb/ Delay last pedal b4 amp or FOH Joyo American Sound. The Joyo is a sleeper cheap awesome pedal. It can be used as a great Cab and amp sim, nice Fenderish clean pedal platform, takes the other pedals well. Or the Joyo can be used as a clean lead boost if the board is being used going into an amp. This set up covers a lot of ground! It all fits snugly into a toolbox I found outside, and it’s powered by a powered frame I took out from the small Tourtek powered pedal board/ case!…It’s all you need basically🤘🏾

As a Fripp/Howe/Hackett fan, I would add a volume pedal.
Roland Gr55 - and you have everything - with alternatives (i.e. 5 types of wah - multiple distortions multiple everything) alternate tunings with the press of a pedal. sample triggering, and its all neat and tidy in one box in front of you. Go from a clean sound with rotary speaker (in stereo) to any lead sound you can imagine with one pedal press. Go from Open G to GADDAD to standard in three successive songs with the same guitar and NO retuning downtime.
I've been using one for 4 years - and the sounds you get out of it just keep getting better and better. You can download other peoples patches and sound settings for free if you want to. With multiple effects on its super clean - no degradation form a long chain.
I might be the only on here to say this, but I’ve always thought a Tube Screamer was a waste. My go to OD flips between an OCD and a Boss OD2.
Just bought TS Mini. It's nothing like my OCD, which works really well as a stand alone OD pedal into a clean amp. The TS works OK as a boost into the OCD, or into a distorted amp channel.
Chorus is one of my favourite effects besides distortion. I just love it. Gives my tone so much beef.
How about a tuner as a must?
My must have pedals are a strobe tuner, TS808 Tube screamer, 2 delay pedals, and a Carl Martin compressor/limiter, and an MXR 10 band EQ but I don't use that too much.

Volume pedal is my number 1. Dynamics without affecting your tone through a pot, amp knob, or playing harder/lighter (and changing how the tubes are driven).
I bought a cry baby 15 years ago and i have used it constantly ever since, i never saw the need for any other Wah. All of my other gear has come and gone, only the wah remains.

Tablature Butler Yeah they do have a bit of a noise but I actually enjoy that noise when I turn it on. With the overdrive I don't want my wah to be silent, I like that buzz it creates, it almost makes the wah sound like it's growling and waiting to be unleashed. I don't often use it when I need silence but I am working on finding the right suppression for if I ever do.

I first bought a Cry Baby Wah in 1971. Sold it around 1983. Bought another one in 2018.
One wild card pedal is a pitch shifter because if you are into very drop tunings, a pitch shifter will still give the guy with standard tuning a heavier sound. On the other hand, if you are playing bass and a guy brings his seven or eight string guitar to compete with you, you can set it a couple of octaves up and compete with him.
ooooorrrrrr you could pick whatever effects you want and have a sound that is original to you.

Realistically all you need is a good tube amp, tuner, and overdrive. Maybe a second guitar for alternate tuning.... That's boring tho!

If a Backstair Ht-5 is part solid state then Im a solid state fan.
The Rolands are always great. I heard that the Backstair HT5 is part solid state but cannot confirm for sure. I bough a solid state backstair ID series and it sounded weak, fizzy, and processed. It wasn't close but to be honest I haven't tried a lot of solid state amps. Randall makes some good SS amps as well. Later

I have a small pedal board with exactly what he recommends... but added compression pedal. Depends on your taste I suppose.

My three bare-minimum pedals are a volume pedal, distortion or channel switcher, and a tuner. After using those three for so long, I don't think that I could gig without them. Of course, I love a good wah, delay, and chorus. Great video Phillip!

i used to rely on my phone which is fine except at gigs its really hard for the tuner to pick up your sound, even if its right in front of the amp. also who wants to hear someone tuning in between songs? getting a pedal tuner is the most basic way to sound better :)

I agree with this... the wildcard for me is a compressor. Don't necessarily have to have it but a good one really bumps up the sonic color.
Here's a helpful tip from Joseph. Don't waste your money on pedals you will never use. The only pedal you really need is some type of boost or over drive and if your amp has shitty reverb then get a reverb pedal. You don't need a wah or phaser if you don't plan on playing space music.
I was beginning to wonder just... for a second or two when you got to the third pedal (modulation fx /phaser pedal) and cranked it up... I was thinking... er... am I missing something here? Then you absolutely killed it and cracked me up with your totally bemused expression and uncensored " I don't know why I'm doing that... you get the idea?". As for the pedal? Totally love the "bare minimum" sound? Too cool. Loved it. Stay true pal. As if you knew any other way, right?
Hmm.... For me:
1) Tuner
2.) Boost
3.) A really good delay
4.) A really good verb
5.) Overdrive
In that order. Then I'd go volume pedal, then maybe chorus. But wah is like the last thing I'd use... I'm not in a cover band.

So a few years ago I bought a Morley pedal, and loved the sound, but its a huge tank. A couple of months ago I sold it - and bought a Dunlop mini - on reverb. Love how small the mini is, easily fits on pedal board, but not sure I like the sound all that much. Just the other day I found myself wishing I had the Morley back. Of course I can't say this in front of wife ....
the issue with the mxr phase for modulation is that it sounds like you're listening to a band from a quarter mile away on a windy day...
For anyone searching for their first pedal but are overwelmed by the variety I strongly suggest the vox stomplab IIG.
it's a small multi effects board with a wah pedal, tuner and about a hundred different pre set sounds... most of them quite tasteful and you can even customise oder create new effects.
if your new to this kinda stuff I think this is an excellent way to check out new sounds and get a feel for different kind of effects before buying other single Effect pedals..

This is good advice you can noodle around for ever chasing the horizon as it keeps getting further away or go straight for the money shot .. it's not just get these pedals it's how to use them and why. I've got a Boss ME-50 and I set up these on board pedals it's excellent .. get a Boss ME-80 a 60 watt amp with drive and reverb start recording straight into your laptop via the voice recorder all you need is a drum/bass machine and like Jim Morrison said you're the future.

I would agree with all this, but with the addition of an EQ pedal as a standard. Pedals have such a way of inadvertently changing the tone you originally set on the amp. Tube Screamers suck bass and add a ton of mids, some reverb pedals will add bass when the pedal's master volume is increased, etc. Having a good EQ pedal can help to normalize the tone changes your pedals make. I recommend the MXR M-108 which is a 10-band EQ. I use it constantly for dialing in specific tones.

I saw the title "the four must have pedals and why" and I thought to myself- I have only used four pedals in 90% of studio and live situations for many years now because in my view they are THE four must have pedals and everything else I can really do without and keep things simple. I had already started preparing my argument in my mind to explain why MINE are the real four must have pedals. That's right- my Crybaby Wah pedal, Tube Screamer, Boss Chorus (a modulation effect), and Delay pedal... wait... this dude nailed it!

This is a SPOT ON Advice. Thank you. But I did not hear you mention a tuner pedal. I use the "Tube Drive" on the Line6 M5 pedal instead of the Ibanez Tube Screamer. The Line6 M5 also has a tuner built-in. I also added a booster pedal at the beginning of the chain. My board: Mini Wah pedal, Line6 M5 for Overdrive with a tuner, MXR Phase95, and a delay pedal. The Wild Card Pedal that I take out and Add sometimes is my Boss looper pedal. Thanks for the video!

Yes, they're more essential than wah or modulation. Though, I'd even rely on amp's EQ to make room for some kind of modulation pedal.

Fuzz? Kinda hard to do chords with that. You don't need a tuner pedal, you can get clip-ons by the dozen for peanuts. Waste of pedalboard space
But most anytime you play clean, you'll benefit from a dedicated compressor, and realistically, a lot of players who aren't solely into rock music are going to get a lot of mileage from it. More so than from any modulation added to spice things up now and again.
Jazz cats usually just plug straight-in without any effects. Angus Young of AC/DC is the same way -- from the SG to the Marshall amp with nothing else in between except a cable. Granted, I'm not dissing effects. To each their own, but you'd be surprised how innovative you can be when you keep the effects to a minimum, or none at all.

I play straight into a cranked Matchless Lightning with an attenuator between the amp and speaker to allow me to use the amps natural overdrive and can go from clean to mean with a twist of the guitars volume knob. Only way to rock! Time based effects (delay, chorus, etc) are all gimmick.
+6672rock I saw AC/DC live at the Hammersmith Odeon (a large former cinema in London , now a big rock venue) in their early years . He had a radio transmitter on his shoulder-strap , and his signature move was to disappear from the stage during a big solo ,then show up in the upper balcony ( or the "Gods" as it was known ), still playing his heart out .
Only slight hitch , the radio frequency he was using was the same one as a local cab company ! Just as he reached the high point his guitar went silent , to be replaced by " Calling all Star-Cabs , anybody close for a collect from the "Sun King" restaurant ?" !!
6672rock ; I agree! A great sounding guitar coupled with a great sound amp ( totally subjective of course) is the bedrock of great sound. Effects are just extra ingredients that, if used thoughtfully, can spice up an already great sound. Add too much- the core " flavor" gets lost in the mix.

I think a compressor is the most important pedal especially for anyone who plays a lot of clean. It is the MXR Dynacomp is the most important pedal on my board. Also, it boosts the sustain for lead playing and solos.
My first pick would be something that offers a clean boost. To use transitioning from lead to rhythm. Keeps you from being at the sound mans mercy when going from lead to rythm
For me, the four essential pedals on my board:
1. Looper pedal- for chord progressions and backing tracks
2. Drop tune pedal - many rock/metal songs use drop tuning of some type
3. Wah pedal- blues and rock use it a lot
4. Delay/reverb pedal - used a lot!
the overdrive/distortion is available in most amps and no need for extra pedals.

for me is a tuner, an overdrive, and a distorsion for rock music, is rare when you really need to use anything more besides that playing with a band

I prefer a Small Stone over a wah. It kind of has an autowah sound. Combined with certain Dimarzio pickups, which are already dynamic and vocal, the sound is fantastic.
Blackstar amps and the PRS S2 guitars are just such a big bang for your buck.

That's a great starting point. It gets interesting when you add a few more drive pedals. I like a treble booster, distortion and an overdrive, boosting a driven valve amp. It's the spice of life!

OK, what if coin is in short supply. All your money is tied up in agricultural commodities, textiles, and real estate (ie. food, clothing, and shelter). Are multifunction pedals an acceptable poor man's substitute, or should we sell a kidney or other body part to afford a big pile of pedals?
Honestly get a great amp with good reverb built into it and all you'll need is a wah and modulation, either chorus, phaser, delay.

I use an ESP/LTD ec 400 vf. A cheap $400 made in Korea guitar.
But I put Seymore Duncan custom shop pickups ,and coil tapping pots. For a total of around $525. Then bought a cheap Vox vt20+ amp for $150 new in the box. A Cry baby Wah $100 ,and a used DOD volume/wah. I then acquired two cirwin vega 12" stage mon. In exchange for some work. And was given a old empty Marshall 2/12 combo cabinet completely striped. I put the CV speakers in the cab wired for 4ohms. Then added a cutoff switch ,and a speaker 4ohm ext.speaker jack on the amp.
And purchased a footswitch for the amp $50 Amazon.
So all total about $1,300 invested over about a year.
This rig blows away almost everything I've put it next to.
Including full stacks!! I know it's crazy !!! I still can't believe how beautiful the tone , clarity, and power just cut through. This rig is also extremely versatile. As I play with multiple bands ,and multiple genre's. For small rooms or practice I just use the 8" internal speaker. This amp also has aux input for backtrack , and headphone for practice.
I say the tone is 45% guitar,45% amp,and 10% pedal when needed.
I believe there are numerous ways of achieving this with many different combinations of guitars, amps and pedals. The key is "less is more!!"

One solution would be to buy cheaper pedals. One example would be to buy the Joyo Vintage Overdrive in place of the Ibanez Tubescreamer. I have heard side by side and they are pretty comparable in every catagory except price. The Joyo one is about $30.
George Erdner I saved up for a boss me-70. It's 70 plus pedals in one unit durable as all get out. Use it as a "fast" set up pedal board or for just jamming with friends or noodling.

Great video. Nice tip on pedals. Agree with the selection. Distortion, delay, and reverb are top 3 for me. Add a phaser at min setting or put in a wah for some new cool sounds works for me.
But Tubescreamers make Strats even more lacking in bass :(
Yes I agree, but there are dozens of versions of it that will fit the Strat a little better.

Wampler Clarksdale pedal is a Tubescreamer with bass, mid and treble. You can turn up the bass.

tube screamer but a good nastiness factor, with better and more clear lows
and mids. Responsive tone control makes the pedal super versatile, very solid

Thanks for the video. Everybody has their own opinion, but this is a great start. I agree that these are the 4 main categories of tools on your pedal board that you can use to shape your tone. Just with a wah alone you can get so many different tones and give yourself a little extra sustain on leads. Of course my board has EQ, boost, 3 OD's, wah, and an M12 stompbox modeler, but in all honesty that's probably too much. I've just experimented over the years and found what I like with my amp, guitar, playing style, etc.

If you are just playing for yourself skip buying a ton of pedals, get a decent used guitar and amp and learn how to get the sounds you want from the amp settings and your own skills. You would be amazed how many fantastic recordings were made with no pedals. Gear does not make the guitarist. If you want to sound like U2 go ahead and buy a ton of effects. Cheap pedals sound cheezy.

Most people can’t crank their amps. Pedals are necessary to simulate amp saturation at the very least.
I also have a Barber LTD, and that one gives a mild, very warm tubey overdrive sound.

Personally , i'd go with EHX's (short for Electro Harmonix) OCTAVIX pedal, or, in lack of cash, EHX's satisfaction fuzz, or, worst case scenario (but not a bad pedal at all, just doesn't take batteries) , the XVive V4 FUzz.
Good choice Phil. I have those pedal types. Had a Boss Tremolo and Flanger but hardly used them - sold. Had a Boss Chorus but just didn't get on with chorus - sold. Settled for the MXR Phase 95 Phaser, and like you prefer the slow speed for subtle effect/movement, but as you point out, a phaser can cover a lot of bases.
Never did like the Tube Screamer.... decades later and I still don't!
I like the TS808 model rather than the one he is using but only as a boost for my tube amp, I don't consider it an overdrive in my case at all.
Richard Aaron I could see it being used as a boost. It most likely works quite well in your set up. I may be biased against the sound of the pedal itself because it has been so overused. I'm funny that way ;)

I'm using a Laney tube amp with the drive on 9 and the pre-amp on 7 which to me sounds awesome with my Orange cab and my Jackson Soloist. I feel like the amp, the cab and the guitar are responsible for my tone (and my playing style of course) I only use the TS808 as a clean boost really but I'm thinking of trying some other boost pedals like a TC Electronic Spark or an Xotic Booster.
Personally I'd reccomend a tuner on top of all those but other than that i 100% agree!! And really any modulation is good, but phasers are the most fun!!

I have one, but I never use it. Fun to use but not really practical for the type of music i play.
Automatic Wah may be useful to change the attack a little. It makes guitar sound sweet. If you don't want to sound like funk you can dial it down a little. It has so many uses. If you use it on low pass and have some crazy distortion in front of it you may get some brass like sound which is very cool. After listening to Kirk Hammett I get allergy to wah pedals :P
I've gone off the wah sound, but I fill find it useful just turning it on in the down position as a high frequency boost.

I play worship music at my church and I use the wah pedal all the time, just to spice up my chords by using like a volume pedal, or on a guitar solo. I wouldn't leave home without it.
The must have pedals depend on the amp. Sometimes one of them is a footswitch. A clean amp has different needs than an amp w reverb and a good dirty channel. So, for me, the essential functions between amp and pedals are: distortion, reverb, boost, tuner. Secondarily: wah and tremolo

Have what I need for me.Play out of a Marshall DSL 40.Les Paul,Tele, and Strat.Use Boss Delay and Tremolo.About to get a Cry Baby wah and that will complete my sound.There is a million ways to use your volume and tone on both the Amp and your Axe.After 38 years of playing I like simple but that is just me.

Haha so true! I had a 535Q and sold it on eBay after a couple years. I ended up buying the same exact pedal back a couple months ago.
Replace modulation with Noise Gate, and put the modulation as my "wild card" pedal and you have my ideal pedalboard.
My version of this list is not far from yours, but does include a few decision points:
1. Wah Pedal - Pick your favorite - For the same reasons you gave in the video.
2. Overdrive Pedal - Either Tubescreamer or Klon Like - Ibanez TS9, J Rockett Archer, EHX Soul Food, etc. are all great options. Getting an overdrive that adds a slight amount of color to your tone as well as pushes your amp's distortion channel just that little bit further for playing lead is super useful.
- Notice I didn't call this a boost pedal, as I find those pedals a bit more niche application where the right OD pedal can act as both a boost and an OD.
3. Delay Pedal - What you get first should really depend on what you like. Solid Digital Delays like the TC Flashback or Boss DD-7 are great for general purpose delay use. However, if you like you delay to be more responsive to your pick attack or dig late 70's/early 80's subtle trails, you're better off with analog or tape delay in front of your amp (not in the effects loop) like a MXR EP-103 or MXR Carbon Copy. Pete Thorn has a phenomenal video on this trick.
4. Choice Pedal - There are a lot of directions you can go in the last slot. Modulation is a fun and useful effect: A phaser is generally useful, chorus is the sound of the 80's, vibrato is a more vintage tone, and flange is just fun. However, depending on what delay pedal you get, you may be getting an on-board modulation effect with it too. If you don't go with modulation, my strong recommendation would either be a polyphonic single octave pitch shifter like the EHX Pitch Fork or a Looper with exportable tracks like the TC Ditto Stereo. Both of these pedals are indispensable for practicing are absolutely two pedals every guitar player needs. Pedals like the Pitch Fork allow you to bring the power of music theory to your board and accomplish ear training while Loopers are indispensable for perfecting techniques by allowing you to hear yourself and are also very useful for practicing keeping time with the tracks you write.
Two pedals I definitely don't think make this list in 2020 are Reverbs and Tuners. I love and am never selling my variants on both of these types of pedals but they are not really needed immediately with how far guitar technology has progressed. Plenty of amps these days have killer built in Reverb and there are a million very accurate ways to get a tuner outside of your pedalboard.
You could get one of those multi modulation pedals. Those are great. You have tremolo, phaser, flanger, and all of those things in one pedal. And they don't seem to be much more expensive than just one pedal.
