His ego went to his head and killed him. He had enormously talented musicians, but he refused to acknowledge that. A big part of the 60s success was due to them, but instead he robbed them of their money and abused them. After they left him he went straight down the gutter.
Those albums he released during the early to I say mid-seventies are not disco but the funk. He was part of the foundation of the music we call today funk. Yeah, he prepped up some of his band members to go to join Ths Uncle Jam Army with the Mothership.
They do and they don't at the same time. Disco music was just a mainstream version of a sound he'd been playing for years. A boring, repetitive version of his sound. 😄 It would be like...I dunno. Like if Bobby Flay opened up a chain of corn dog stands. Just a waste of his talents.
for example, take the Wikipedia article, what are the roots of disco music? Philly soul (the same funk, only with a tie, bow tie and a beautiful arrangement), funk itself (who is the father of this genre?) and soul (who is the godfather of this genre?) So yes, the disco music direction itself is 95 percent obliged to James Brown, and James Brown knew it, everyone knew it, but as they wrote above - disco is a predictable boring version of funk, it does not suit the explosive Mr. Dynamite 🤙

I knew James Brown's music from a few songs I have heard on the radio (I feel Nice, that was a popular one). After watching that movie about him from a few years ago, I get the feeling James Brown not only did. he crank out a ton of popular music, but he broke a lot of ground, made his genre of music. way more popular and marketable. Its hard to measure how big of a impact he made in music, but I suspect thanks to him, music is a lot cooler. Also, what a showman. I cannot think of any modern musicians who has foot work that can compare to what James Brown was doing, Michael Jackson would be tne nearest comparison (with the Moon Walk). James Brown was the man, was a one man show, kind of a shame that old school R&B is not as popular anymore.
@ 0:50 starts the funniest shit I've ever scene. When the camera shows the people clapping. I imagine he came in the house without asking. "Yea James we see you" 😂
'The Pressure', there it is, it's a Disco beat before it was Disco... Disco was a fusion of THAT beat, that Pressure beat, open hihat in the pocket, on the One, fused with Gospel, Soul, even Jazz and Classical music as a romantic element.
Polydor gave Brown a big lump of money to sighn with them because they felt that having james brown would have a halo affect on potential future acts wanting to sighn with them in the North American Market. They had no interest in james brown whatsoever other than the prestige he gave them. They sent "producers ' into his sessions with the intention of plugging james into the disco craze and ruined his sound. Polydor could not care less, they got what they wanted. Brown was contractually obliged to take that direction, it was in ink. Those earlier albums, payback, body heat etc, may not have been big in the white music world but were all innovative and james was big in the black community as he ever was. Right up to the dawn of hip hop, james was the 'toughest' sound , even considering stevie, funkadelic, marvin, al green, whoever, who were all enjoying crossover success at that point. Thankfully, the blues brothers and rocky kept him curremt in people's minds so he at least could do shows for good money still. Also, in his last years I feel he finally got the popular respect of not being an act that was past it but was one of your eternal, blue prints of popular music, like the beatles and elvis etc. Get up of a that thing was a last gasp .

Disco was mainstream at that time and hugely popular, and record labels were clamoring for artists to record disco records for a quick buck. It wasn't dead by any means. It was done to death, but it didn't die, it just turned electronic. Dance Fever and Solid Gold were still on Tv in 1979.

Some of those albums that didn’t hit top ten were classics tho. Especially Sex Machine and The Payback
More proof that the pop chart is NOT the ultimate barometer of what great music is.
Pop charts, that is. R&B charts he did just fine.
That Payback was everything
Not to mention they found new life after those albums were heavily sampled during hip-hop's golden era.

Too funky in here is a great track with a thumping bass line.
That's one of my favorites and I think it's underrated!
I like that
The Original Disco Man is one of the best albums ever recorded IMO. Let The Boogie Do The Rest is such an underrated song
To each their but I found the title track to be very sad. Pretty much exactly as Mike Judge described.
No.
I’m not a fan of Disco James Brown. He should have tried to follow Parliament, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James instead of following Disco.
RIP The GodFather Of Soul
It took a whole generation 2 Eclipse one man
