technically it's an orchestral work with organ written by a composer who played organ very well wanting to bring the organ sound to an orchestra but also to stick his nose at Berlioz who said the organ could no way work well with a full orchestra

Not necessarily. A big, powerful organ, such as we have in the UK, as in many other countries (not just in America!), is capable of overwhelming a 70-piece orchestra. It's just that the conductors and orchestras don't like it!

Also, he was an admirer of Franz Liszt and was certainly influenced by his work. Liszt frequently transcribed his own compositions for various instruments and orchestral ensembles. Even with the best cans, it doesn't really do this organ justice. You have to be in the building to experience not just the aural but the physical experience of a recital. The way the lower pedal notes thud through your chest is quite literally breath taking.

I am involved in a complex project and wanted to tell my co-workers to start simply and end BIG. I thought of musical metaphors, the War of 1812 is obvious, better the Moldau (Ma Vlast No.2 Vltava)...a little brook begins in the mountains and passes past hunters, a village wedding, next the gorge, then the mighty Moldau River flowing thru Prague itself. The Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 also occurred to me as a powerful metaphor. This transcription is an absolute musical masterpiece.. Listen to the orchestral rendition then replay this transcription to fully understand the enormity of the achievement.

Saint-Saens "Organ" Symphony is one of my favourite works of music. The organ part on its own is challenging enough. I have heard it played on two organs but never just on one. How about a piano-organ arrangement with brother Tom? Jonathan´s mastery of the organ is awesome. He didn't even have a score!!

In the English Organ, one thing that shines through is the quality of the work of 19th century organ builder T. C. Lewis. This is one of his rare surviving instruments, as well as at Cullercoats and St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne. It is a tragedy that few of his organs survive in original condition.

I have died and gone to heaven. This is the first time I have heard the Finale without the orchestra. And with Jonathan's Brilliant arrangement, and his tour de force playing, who needs the orchestra?

This has been my favorite piece since I first heard it as a young man in the early 70s. This rendition is the first transcription I have heard, and it rendered me speechless. Scott far surpasses any other organist I have heard on this piece. I am thrilled and will play this over and over. Thank you Jonathan Scott for this precious gift.

Holy mackerel.... I have always said that this is the music that will be playing as one enters the gates of heaven ... what a colossal recording of it. I am dumbstruck. I had to listen a couple of times to be sure I hadn't hallucinated the whole thing. W.O.W.

I never realized there was a score for organ without orchestra for this section. Amazing and well performed with excellent registration proving the organ is indeed the king of instruments.

Jonathan Scott produced this wonderful organ-only arrangement himself - and sells the score on his website. However, I suspect that only he has the ability to play it 😀! I saw and heard him give a transcription masterclass just yesterday, and he demonstrated clearly that his musicianship and facility with the instrument with music like this is quite unrivalled IMO (and I know, and have known, many great organists and also play the organ to a high level myself). He also played this wonderful arrangement in a concert later in the day! I think I'll buy the score now... 😃.
