  • Mark Prior was the number two overall pick for the Cubs in 2001 after winning the Golden Spikes Award at USC. He emerged as one of the best pitchers in the league in 2003 along with his teammate, Kerry Wood. But after 2003 including the Steve Bartman game that he pitched in, things took a turn for the worst for him as he dealt with numerous and a huge decline in performance that saw him never return to the majors after 2006.

    The Bartman incident...
I saw it live. I honestly do not believe that meltdown happens if Alou didn't lose his shit over the game state not changing at all. I was on edge at home watching it on tv, I can imagine how his teammates took it, particularly Alex Gonzalez, who booted a routine ground ball seconds later.

agree 100%...I've always believed that Alou's overly-demonstrative protest made the entire situation much, much worse.

Saves streak be damned. Gagne might have the hardware on a mantle somewhere, but Prior won the Cy Young in 2003. The hardware is in our hearts, where it matters 😅

I don't know that there's another 1-2 at the top of a rotation that I enjoyed more than Wood-Prior for that short stretch.
Maybe a Randy Johnson rotation (Clemens, Schilling, Pick One)

Mark Prior mechanics were so bad it almost hurts to watch.
Go on slow motion.. He's extremely upright, gets very little dip and leg drive and proceeds to throw across his body..
It was only a matter of time before he had a serious arm injury with that delivery.
It wasn't Dusty Baker who ruined his career smh..
And you are right, he definitely had HOF potential

@@s.henrlllpoklookout5069 Baker was wrong. Having a rookie throw 140 pitches is stupid now and it was stupid then. Then in 2003 you have him throw two complete games in April in only his second professional season when he's only 1 year removed from short college seasons. And he lead the league in pitchers-per-start. In his first full season.
If it wasn't for his 3 weeks on the DL, Prior was on pace to throw around 230 innings. This wasn't 1990 it was 2003. 225 IP got you in the top 10 IP in 2003. The years of the 275 IP starter were long gone.

From a honest Cubs fan. I now ask all you a question, let’s say Dusty didn’t ruin Mark’s career by overworking him. Where would he be after 2003? Would the Cubs still be good?

Three points: 1. Bravo for hammering Baker for not visiting mound and chewing out Prior and all who could hear after “Bartman” moment; 2. Bartman did not cost Cubs the game, the shortstop’s error did; 3. Cubs still could have won game 7 with Wood, but he failed in key opportunity. Prior, like Chris Sale, another example of incorrect emphasis on strikeouts versus putting ball in play and letting fielders make the plays. Fewer pitches, less arm strain.

When they came up, it appeared that Kerry Wood and Mark Prior would be outstanding for a long time. Unfortunately, as so often happens, injuries can derail promising careers.

Baker was wrong. And after Wood's early injuries the Cubs should have been more cautious.

So untrue. I can’t even watch anymore. Mark prior did not have great mechanics, in fact the Mets were terrified of drafting him because he threw all arm, no body. The SI article I read said that if you cut prior off at the waist he would still pitch 95mph. So yes, bad mechanics and a motion that utilized all arm put his career In an early grave.

Astros fain here and despite the recent winning seasons I'm glad Baker is gone. He did tons of head scratching moves and I feel like with a competent manager the team would have 3 or more rings right now.

Agree. I always thought Baker was a below-average manager and simply got lucky to win a WS by hanging around long enough.

Mark Prior is the reason why pitch counts are so overly monitored today. It was his mechanics, over pitching, and Dusty Baker. A combination of all of those things that ruined him!

That comeback hit that hit his elbow 100% proves that his career was cursed. At that point there was no way he would ever be the pitcher he was supposed to be.

Stories like this are why I cannot get mad at Dave roberts pulling his pitchers early, even when they are throwing a no-hitter or a perfect game.

    • @shoukatsukai

It still happens regardless. Buehler, May, Treinen, etc. on the Dodgers alone got lengthy IL stints under Roberts. If you have the chance to go for history, go for it because with how pitchers are developed nowadays, they're guaranteed to get injured.
