- Our guest this week is none other than the legend Brian Windhorst (ESPN). We get into so much about The Los Angeles Lakers free agency, his career covering LeBron James and much more... But in this clip, Brian talks to us about free agency, the evolution of the business of the NBA and how we got here. It's fascinating.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter TH-cam channel today for more NBA analysis, player interviews and highlights.

Shoutout Windy. And shoutout you all. We are somehow inching towards a million TH-cam subscribers (905K right now). That's pretty mindblowing for us. So big thank you all for being so supportive of the channel. We have something special planned for when we cross a million subs so be sure to subscribe if you haven't yet. Windy full ep drops tomorrow. Cheers.
Windy’s awesome! 👏
Lebron James is The Greatest Flopper of all Time. 6x lose and swept 3x in NBA Finals. That's why he had no.6 in his jersey 😂🤣🤣
Proud of you fam!
Nyc is the best city in the world... where JJ going

This is the most eloquent and informative I have ever seen Brian Windhorst, and the reality is that's completely an indictment of ESPN's segments and choice of narratives to cover as opposed to the absurd depth of his NBA knowledge.
I don't think ESPN is to blame for that. I remember taking a journalism class and you would be docked a grade if the professor decided the reading comprehension was too high. They're trying to explain/entertain in a very basic manner for a bigger audience. I just appreciate JJ can do a podcast like this for the people who are interested.
@@zzcoolj21that makes sense but to get paid to give such basic and uninformative opinions is a joke. I dunno what they get but I guarantee it’s loads so at least pay them the equivalent to the level of insight they provide.
@@kammo9935the average american isn’t very smart lol, they would be lost by this information 3 minutes in.
for those of us who can comprehend, it’s amazing + what we’ve wanted all along.
He’s like this on his own podcast three times per week
It’s the hand waving
I absolutely love absurdly detailed NBA talk
Same lol it’s wild
Man same
Lmaoo facts bro The NBA is like a reality TV show they just happened to play basketball😂
😂😂 same
Agreed We all do😁🎙
Windy in this format is one of the most entertaining NBA personalities I've ever listened to. Windy needs to be a regular on here, especially after critical cut-off dates in the season (free agency periods, draft nights, trade deadlines, etc
He’s on/has the hoop collective podcast too
He has his own podcast is this great every episode. It’s called the Hoop Collective
He got his own pod it's really good
Scoooop!! He’s my brothers best friend. We see each other in Charlotte all the time. He gets a few mulligans tho on the course 😂
Hoop Collective is a goldmine ❤️🔥
This is more exciting to me than having actual nba superstars on, thanks for giving the fans a better insight on the inner workings of an nba front office
More of these episodes please. I’m not as sharp on nba contracts as I should be and this helped !
Windys knowledge is always on point. Hes definitely a basketball junkie at heart. Hes always giving us extra info that makes you think too. Love listening to his insights 👏🏽
My favorite part about when he does things like this is you can tell he loves teaching people about it, it isn't just him being "look what I know"
@@aj_5339 he's a nerd sharing his hobby, you can tell how much he loves it
I never knew Windy had this much knowledge. ESPN should make him focus as a financial analyst. ESPN keeps trying to make him a tactical analyst, but he's not a coach and he's not a former player. That's why I didn't like him because I felt he had no right to tell players how to play.
Windy is so insightful no wonder players respect him... Can't believe I didn't like him back when he was lebron's personal media
He is a clown, don't let this info fool you. This is basic, but he still lied there.
Luckily Lebron is retiring soon and Wemby can start being honest about Lebron
@@blablablaa14 Wemby is not hones to himself. The guy is mediocre
@@blablablaa14sounds like a clown convention in here

PLEASEEE PLEASEEE if it’s possible to have more episodes/topics like this. I love learning about the business side behind different industries and etc…. This is conversations that is NEEDED‼️
I can't wait for the day Windy goes independent... He is going to tell us everything
Disney broke as a joke bro. We ain't gonna have to wait long the way they laying off people over at ESPN lol
@@JoshuaFrick3 haha you have a good point. They let go some of their best talent.. Jeff Van Gundy talks about coaching again haha
@@JoshuaFrick3why is disney’s broke / going broke ion have any social media can you tell me.
@jtymon24 yea windy is insightful i feel like he has a wild personality to lol
@@MF_Jah from what I've heard Windy has a very big mouth and spills a lot of insider things that shouldnt be put out... But for us fans it's great.. ppl in the league are constantly getting mad at him but he has covered lebron since lebron was a child
I love insight like this.. no provocative predictions, no recency bias hot takes. Just clear concise structured conversation.
Superstars get 30+ unless its an overpay by a weak team a la VanVleet, Above average class role players get 20s, and the bottom 60% of the league scrounge for
When Windy came out of nowhere 20+ years ago as the guy who attached himself to high school LBJ I thought it was super cring and thought he was laughable. Over the years, however, he has become significantly more comfortable in front of the camera and drastically increased the scope of his reporting to the point I thoroughly enjoyed this segment. Credit where its due he found an opportunity and made the most of it.
Windy’s combination of mastery of the details, storytelling, and humor is fantastic and impressive. He could explain some nuance on my mortgage contract and make me enthralled. Love the podcast JJ & Tommy!
Windhorst is him. Incredible insight.
Windy is a jerk. No basketball. Just business.
Windhorst is truly one of the best in the business!!
And at the buffet 😃
Best at what health training?windhorst build like he eat in the shower
At least he's not a d*ckhead ^^^
@@LooseBooty-tv7nyyou the one with a loose booty 😂
@@stevenhornostaj5676 so while your jerking off in your grandmas basement making 10 an hour at some yayhoo job, he is making 100's of thousands and is married with a family . but thank gosh your skinny and hes not cause that automatically makes you better than him cause your skinny
Windy is the freaking man.
It's rare that guys can talk business and keep your attention
Really solid interview. Windy seemingly have free reign to say whatever he wants/thinks about these topics is awesome. He genuinely knows so much more than I thought and is extremely insightful, almost like he knows exactly what we want to hear. Great breakdowns and always a solid job by JJ and Tommy to let the interviewer do majority of the talking. Well done fellas.
Simply one of the most knowledgeable and articulate guys around basketball. I always learn something when I listen to him.
I'm a basketball junkie thru and thru but I'm blown away by half of what I learned from Windy today. So informative yet he makes it sound understandable for a casual's ears. Awesome content that we wish we'd see more!
I can listen to Windhorst talk basketball for hours
JJ and Tommy, you guys keep producing FANTASTIC content! Glad I subscribed. That was truly great. Hope there’s more.✌🏿🙌🤗
To know these rules and details exist is one thing. But to cognizantly understand how they contextually fit / affect the business and cultural structure is quite amazing 👌🏽
wow, this was one of the best segments i've seen in quite a while. super informative. and i like listening to windy when he's not just doing 30-60 second blurbs for one of the network shows. great one jj.
Absolutely brilliant segment. JJ with the subtle flex about taking a pay cut if he would join a team at the veterans minimum was top notch 💪
This has been the best interview on this channel. Almost skipped it because I expected more of an ESPN like episode but this was a very chill but very educational video.
man oh man. I could gobble up content like this all day long! Keep it up JJ!
I cant get enough of these detailed discussions on all topics revolving around the NBA.
Shout out to Windy too, he is great when given time to speak in depth on things.
That was awesome. ESPN sends this man to France for a 30-second interview that no one cared about when he should be doing this more often.
Windy got the strongest hairline in the game
Jalen Rose
@@Roc_Officialhis is painted on lol
Windy and JJ talking NBA in a long form segment is about as good as it gets. Love to hear an intelligent, insightful, thoughtful take on the NBA.
Extremely solid episode. You guys deserve the milly. You're my only NBA media these days!
Now, this is one of the things I love to unpack. There's so much there. Thanks again, guys. I think everyone in this basketball and NBA space needs to learn more about this and understand how this affects decisions made (or not made) by teams and players who are savvy or unsavvy. It's definitely the deep cut that we all need. Thanks. I appreciate your work. Keep it coming. (So many questions though, but that's all good & positive).
Yo 😂 he spit so much information 😂 protect windy🎉
As a football junkie I’ve never been enamored with the on the court product of basketball but I’ve always loved the financial side of the game. From the buyout market to free agency, trade exceptions, CBA negotiations it’s all exciting. Personally I’d love to see another Chris Paul episode detailing his role within the union, the lockout, more on bubble negotiations, and current players he’s sees likely to join the union.
Just the opposite, love football, but the devastating injuries makes it less fun. I like basketball games in general, but the financial side is coma inducing, especially knowing the players would play for pennies on the dollar rather than stocking shelves. It's annoying that everyone associated with the NBA are millionaires when all my educated, hard working friends are punching clocks more or less.
Wow that was very informative. Definitely my favorite interview so far.
Windy is the absolute best in the traditional media. Love his NBA breakdown!
In this setting absolute, unfortunately espn wants hot takes and drama. This is the last thing they want talked about. But I agree. He’s awesome in this setting. He knows his stuff
Yet another in the lengthening skein of superlative episodes… this was an extraordinarily informative one, guys. Keep it up!
I love Windhorst. I’m so happy he exist in sports media because I know his talent will be around for a long time
My two favorite basketball analysts by far, JJ Redick and B Windhorst
What an amazing segment. Windy is truly one of the best in the entire business. Nobody works harder than him.
wowww, thank you JJ Redick -- what an awesome segment. I don't ever hear this type of informative dialogue on ESPN, this was great
What an excellent… excellent (!) episode! Great stuff. Thank you JJ and Windy
One more subscriber for you JJ and Tommy. Keep up the great work guys.
Bring him on more and ask him questions like this! Very informative and interesting
Great stuff and show JJ snd Tom 👏 Shoutout to Windy!!
NBA Contracts are so complex and convoluted. Layers upon layers of clauses and rights and thresholds. Like peeling back an onion! Amazing insight from Windy. Just goes to show that media reports of "4yr/$80M" is only a speck of what the reality of a contract really is.
Never really listened to Brian outside of small news clips…I love this guy!
Great show guys very informative.
This was surprisingly entertaining while informative!
long time listener, first time commenter. I have loved the range of conversations on the pod but as a one step above casual viewer whos favorite players all play in small markets, I've never understood the NBA at this level of detail an nuance. I really hope that yall dont stray away from this level of nerdom of the inner workings in the league because this was fascinating.
Favorite interview ever btw I love the way the nba works behind the scenes. I only got into the nba bc of player movement and moved teams had to make with the rules but because of it I have fell in love with the game of basketball. I watch nba games keep up with players I like. Keep tabs on trades. Best of both worlds
Amazing, Thanks JJ for brining this jem
I didn't know Windy was so charismatic and so great at giving complicated information into digestible everyday man's language. This is an amazing video
Love windy! Great guest once again guys 🙌
I didn't even know I needed this information, but I did. Thank you JJ and Brian!
More of this JJ please! Windy is a great listen always!
I love it, more of this please 🙌
I really appreciate the way you guys break down the business of basketball.
Great convo!!!!
imagine if ESPN had access to guys like Windhorst and JJ to talk about such interesting topics that all NBA fans want to listen to
I mean it doesn't really work on mainstream because the ratings have shown its all about debate. Its why they have so few writers left any longer because Ethan Strauss commented a long form well researched piece would get the same if not lesser number of clicks as breaking news.
Ive always loved Windy. Such an amazing analyst.
I could listen to this kind of stuff all day long
Love these conversations
Super informative a great listen
As a Cavs fan I am grateful for you JJ for remembering us 🫡
Haven’t listened yet, but I already know this is going to be one of the most informative guests. This is a great podcast for fans who actually wanna learn about the game and how the business of the nba works. Most sports media doesn’t do that. Most sports media just talks 💩 about people
Pure gold this episode
This was an amazing discussion. Contract talks 🔥 Can this be a regular thing? 🤣🤣🤣
amazing clip! I learned a lot!
Very detailed and high level discussion. Windy is a great communicator.
Mann about time we get to hear this guy 👏
nice to hear Brian's insight, love getting the origin stories of some of these rules
That was actually a fun informative session
Wow i had more fun listening to this than almost any talk about the game or players.. that 20 minutes felt like 5 it was so interesting, hope to hear more of this, fascinating
That was very informative!
Thank you for teaching me this information.
'Grats to JJ "T Rex Arms" Reddick ! You guys are nailing it!
I coach people wanting to stream online that you need the 3 C's
Content, Consistency, Charisma
Within that last one good broadcasters add in "Sincere" "insightful" "Self depricating" and a few more words that add to the sum of the parts.
Not every online show needs to be confrontational and over the top.
Did I mention you guys are nailing it! :)
Noicely Done!
Great explanation by windy 👏👏
That is a impressive episode!
Your listeners WANT to hear the “all the way back to Gilbert” explanations. Love windy for giving it and you for asking JJ!!
Best interview yet
Great segment!
Windhorst has reached the peak of his powers last year or two
This was so insightful.
This was quite informative
As the Brits say, that was a bloody brilliant confab!! Kudos for having Windy break it down like that. Very enlightening!
Loved this
Great info
Great segment
Every quarter you guys should have Windy back on. Such great takes! Also, with Sac not doing anything, they are saving for the trade deadline if they need to add any pieces
This just show how allergic the mainstream sports media is to discussing NBA finance. Loved this discussion!
Maaaaaan, the streets are gonna LOVE this pod. Already sounds like an all timer
Windy you are a legend-such a novel concept being an expert who really knows their stuff!!! Less hot takes more Windy , JJ , Legs analysis.
I would love to know JJ’s reading list, that bookshelf is chocked full
If you look closely none of the spines are cracked, meaning they've never been read
This was 🔥
Windy is the best!! Cannot wait to watch the full show!!
Love this
JJ brings the best out of people
Just great to see somebody who's obviously knowledgeable speaking extemporaneously on a topic without any spin
That was a wonderful knowledge drop from Windy. Really is a fountain of NBA information. Now I have to think about if Schefter stacks up NFL wise 😂
Damn. This is good content
