    In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we delve into Julianos.
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

      It pretty much sums it up. One of the most powerful and learned mages in the history of Tamriel was a Nord, Shalidor, founder of the College of Winterhold and allegedly builder of the entire city that would later become the capitol of Skyrim. Thu'um is an ancient form of magic natural to Dragons and gifted to Nords by the Gods.
      Alchemy, the art and science of making potions and poisons, is just as magical as casting a fireball or summoning an Atronach.
      In TES magic isn't just in everything. Magic IS EVERYTHING. For someone in that universe to say they hate magic is like them saying they hate themselves.

      Breaking games is generally not a desirable feature but when such broken mechanics are taken and instead made a part of the game and used to accentuate the world, then you know you have a true masterpiece in your hands.

      @@AdventurerOfOblivion From a lore stand point it makes sense, you can see effects from ES 4 in ES 5 and I'm sure we'll see more in ES 6. What you're saying is fine, in our world. However this is from a Lore standpoint and it makes sense. The nine are crumbling as a religion, that's kinda what it looks like going from 4 to 5. ES 6 will probably talk of another in-between game war that ultimately lead to the fall or divide of the nine.

      @Grant Ellifrits while chalking it up to skyrim only mentality seems plausible there is one key detail that isn't talked about, but it has been a constant presence throughout all previous games, The Mages Guild. There is no mages guild in Skyrim. Why though it's an international organization that should be present almost in every major city, yet all skyrim has is the college. How come only the thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood are present as their proper denomination. The fighters guild had trouble competing with freelance mercenaries like the Blackwood Company, but the mages guild was fine before the Oblivion Crisis, so people familiar with older lore might notice this. Hope this helped you out.

      I imagine that the fourth era Empire trying to fight the Aldmeri Dominion must have been like our guys in America trying to use classical Battle Tactics during a civil war where Modern rifles had already been invented. The Aldmeri Dominion was described using destruction magic on an incredible scale during the battles, and they mowed down a lot of Imperial troops before they even had a chance to engage.
      Now if a guild of Magic was still in use and good favor, a coalition of smiths and mages could produce some Magic Resistant/Reflecting gear for some of the Imperial troops and they would actually have had a cat's chance in hell. But unfortunately not, they lacked vision cus they lack our boi Jules.

      I think it's more to do with the fact that they "invented" it and it was used by great Nordic heroes to unify the land and accomplish legendary deeds, so there's a lot of pride behind the Voice for the Nords. In reality, just like TheSuperRatt said it's just another form of magic that realizes the musical nature of the world, like Sword Singing for the Yokudans (and maybe Redguards, dunno if there are any that can still do it) and the Tonal Architecture of the Dwemer.

So why exactly would they need a new engine to allow for levitation? They removed it for gameplay reasons (because it completely invalidates a lot of level design aspects), not even remotely because it's something that they couldn't do from a technical standpoint. Either way though, we already know that they're building (or have already built) a new engine for the next Elder Scrolls game.

    I don't know if anyone else has pointed to this yet but WHY, oh WHY, is there, yet again, the confusion about Julianos and MAGNUS? Everywhere I look (UESP, ElderScrolls Wikia, The Imperial Library, etc) Julianos is noted as "the God of Wisdom and Logic (or Learning)". Magnus? Always, always the God of Magic (or Sorcery).
    The Ayelids worshipped Magnus as the God of Sight, Light and Insight. What was light to the Ayleids? Magic. The purest form of it in fact. In that case, Meridia is more magical than Julianos fod goodness sake.
    In Daggerfall (source: The Imperial Library), Julianos' Schools are noted as being like academies and you even quote the lines. "[...] we advocate literacy and education for all Tamrielans [...]". Does that sound like magic to anyone? Because it doesn't to me and I always prefer magic and being a magic wielder in all my games, hence I do like to dig into its origins and related topics. You even mentioned the Schools and the Mages Guild. Why would there be TWO of them? The Bretons have BOTH Julianos and Magnus in their native pantheon and the difference is clear: the former is about learning, knowledge and logic while the latter is about magic.
    And this line pops up everywhere as well: "Cyrodilic legends say he [a/n: Magus] can inhabit the bodies of powerful magicians and lend them his power."
    Is magic logical? No, I would certainly say it isn't. It's mystery. You can't apply logic to something like that. That's why, in TES, it comes from a realm far beyond Nirn (as noted: Aetherius). If Julianos was Jhunal and he was the god that gave mathematics and langauges to mortals. What are languages and mathematics ruled by? Logic, strict patterns and rules, everything that magic isn't ruled by. Why do I see magic as not ruled by logic and rules? Because it comes from another realm: Aetherius. It's highly arrogant and illogical to think that the rules that apply to OUR world would apply to even a neighbouring world. And in this case, there's Oblivion between the two.
    At most, I could agree on that Julianos/Jhunal is the heir/apprentice to Magnus but THE God of Magic? No, that he'll never be to me with so many sources quoting Magnus as the God of Magic. At most, I would say it's similar to how religions in our world have cannibalised rituals and holy days of older faiths in an attempt to make the transition for the new converts.
    But we're all allowed to agree to disagree. I WOULD have given this video more credit if it'd brought up the case of Magnus vs Julianos though. Especally since Magnus, the Architect of Mundus, holds the title of God of Magic that this video bestows Julianos, the Scholar.

    • @roderik4
      @roderik4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One word: Syncretism

    • @Ajehy
      @Ajehy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The question, though, is “Is Magnus a god?”
      In terms of power, he is actually stronger than the Divines (having fled Mundus partway through creation)... but he is not technically a DIVINE. Aiunic, yes, but he’s not bound to Mundus, and his “planet” is a hole punched in the sky when he noped out of there.
      So, then, when the “Eight Divines” pantheon was being put together, it makes sense that Magnus (not technically a divine) would be pushed aside in favor of Julianos.

    • @Ajehy
      @Ajehy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also, Re: Logic and magic, magic may come from Aetherius, but it behaves in reliable, recognizable ways in Mundus, and the study of magic is ABSOLUTELY a science in the ES universe.
      You learn spells (repeatable formulae with predictable results) from books, experiments are constantly being done to expand people’s knowledge of magic, it’s being taught and researched in a college, etc.
      Most scholars are mages, and vice versa: The Court Wizards, Orcish wise-women, it’s a cultural thing. And the Dwemer, the greatest scholars and logicians of all, were MASTERS of magic.
      So while Magnus may be the source of magical power, Julianos is the god who oversees the study and learning required to master the art, giving him an equal claim to the title “God of Magic”.
      ... it’s like the “Dibella vs. Mara” debate, both are goddesses of love, but it’s different kinds and aspects of love.
      Or, for a real-world example, Ares and Athena. Both are Greek gods of war, but Athena is the goddess of battle strategy and justified war, while Ares is the god of senseless bloodshed.

    • @David_Alvarez77
      @David_Alvarez77 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are good comments. I agree that the video ignores Magnus the actual god directly governing magic and whose exit through the firmament allows magic to flow to Mundus. It conflates Julianos the god of wisdom, logic, and learning with the real god of magic perhaps because, as mentioned in the previous comment, magic is studied in rule governed ways in Tamriel. However, this does not mean that Julianos is the god of magic, since learning, reason, logic, and the like are also needed for other disciplines and life in general. Magic is the study which most paradigmatically requires the use of logic and reason to acquire due to its abstruse nature, yet this only points to a close working relationship between Julianos' and Magnus' domains.
      As to the comment on the differences between Athena and Ares, Athena was the god of strategy and intelligent warfare not because she was specifically or only a war deity, but because she was a god of crafts, wisdom, and of achieving purposes in the best way. Warfare is where these things--applicable to many areas of life--take on their most life and death quality.

    it is not magic that is fading, it is the natural cycle of all societies that relly on magic.
    if magic is the thing that leads to greatness, it is also the thing that leads to decadence and therefore to the eventual downfall, the candle that burns twice as brightly only burns for half as long.
    just look at all the great magical empires, they grew fast and died even mroe qiuckly.
    the alyeds where whiped out.
    the snow elves where enslaved and twisted into beasts.
    the dragon cult was whiped out.
    the dwemer disapeared.
    the mages guild was ended.

Also, we don’t know what happened to winterhold, only that a bunch of people who already distrust magic blame the college. Even the mages guild collapsed due to politics and the public turning against magic after the oblivion crisis that the mages guild had nothing to do with. Cyrodil would be Better although knowledge overall would be Restricted. Magi forced into service of the empire and only able allowed to learn what would help the service. I don't know enough about Hammerfell to give an opinion, but then you got High Rock which would become the magical Capital. the best place for Magi to learn and grow with the least restrictions.
      You also have Elswyr, Which I don't think would remain Thalmor. The alliance is built on loose ground and I forsee a revolt at some point in the future. While not the most hospitable of places for humans it may be tolerant to them at least. Same for Morrowind but there would probably be a lot of Indentured servitude going on.

    I was thinking about this yesterday.
    A lot of advanced magic that has been recorded (lore), seen (aylied ruins etc.) and experienced, compared to what actually can be used, isn't there anymore.

    The most powerful military and political power is a magic focused race. The reason magic is less prevalent in Skyrim is because they associate it with the elven races, thus it becomes a reflection of their racism and xenophobia. The Mage's Guild did not dissolve entirely, it split into two groups due to discourse over the study of necromancy and conjuration. Both splinter groups are recognized officially by the Empire. Basically...I have no clue why you think the way you do. Skyrim has always been anti-magic and it's no surprise that they reacted the way they did, but that doesn't mean it's a reflection of the state of magic throughout all of Tamriel.

      You should extend your knowledge.
      Nords have not been against magic (we cannot say Skyrim because it is inhabited by many races with different views), arch-mage Shalidor, for example, is a perfect example, during which' life Nords have been practicing magic on quite a large scale.
      That is why Tsun says Nords forgot about their past as magic-users.
      Nords distrust magic because if the calamity that happened to Winterhold, it is only after most stopped using it that they came to associate magic with Elves (most Nords were not practicing it, most Elves were at that time).

      @guillermoolivaiii9550 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fisebilillah4406 That behavior is still delusional and absurd for the Nords to treat Magic like the many cause, it is an individual or a unfortunate calamity that caused Winterhold to turn like that. Over all, I do enjoy the lore of Elder Scroll, it has a lot of stories of many things.

    IMO magic should start getting weaker overall. Not in actual Power but in the level of skill the Magi have. The Colleges should fade form the public, Becoming small reclusive organizations away from major civilizations. Most cities would have at most 1 or 2 families of mages and lone magi not counting court mages and librarians. While smaller minor villages and town have none, even forgetting mages exist at most may have an Apothecary or Healer. Witch Hunters would begin coming more into power. getting more business and recognition as they hunt the Plentiful amount of Rouge and Hedge mages out in the wilds, sniffing out magic and abominations wherever it may hide.
    Places like High Rock become bastion for Magi as they are built as magic. In other provinces Magicks become more restricted, a typical Magi being pressed into military service or being forced to study in secret. Great noble houses becoming reclusive and mysterious with rumors of them being secretly powerful mages down to the lone hedge studying out in the wilds in hopes they can avoid the Hunters.

    I don't think magic will ever truly be forgotten, as there are many aspects of the world that involve magic. Healers and priests use magic to heal the sick and weak. So there will always be Restoration Magic.
    Battlemages are far too invaluable to a military to get rid of, so there will always be destruction magic.
    Thieves and assassins will always be needed, and those thieves will need invisibility and quiet feet to slip away. So there will always be illusion magic.

      Stendarr's Vigilants aren't mage hunters, they only go after Daedra, Daedra worshippers, and the undead. Granted, conjurers and necromancers are a type of mage, but your average Destruction/Restoration user, item Enchanter, or Alteration expert who worships the Eight (or Nine) ought to be fine.
