  • Dean Ornish, M.D., is the founder and president of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. For over 34 years, he has directed clinical research demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery. He was appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President Obama to the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. He was selected as one of the "TIME 100" in integrative medicine and by Forbes as "one of the seven most powerful teachers in the world." He received his medical training from the Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned a B.A. in Humanities summa cum laude from the University of Texas in Austin.

    One thing I've learned is that no matter how heart breaking it is to watch a loved one descend into disease through bad habits, you cannot push someone up a ladder if they don't want to climb. All you can do is show them that there is a ladder, that they can climb if they want to, and then stand back and let them decide on their own. It is a real shame that most will decide wrong, but if you keep pushing they will resent you, become deeply entrenched and likely worse off.
    This is from personal experience, I am a vegan for reasons of sustainability and health, and rarely get ill, am full of life and energy and health; I am happy that my decisions are based on sound evidence and my own personal principles, yet my sick relatives still think there is something wrong with me, even my aunt who at this moment is in hospital dying of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and my father who is following her. Apparently I need to be more like them.
    Stick to your guns and do what's best for you, help those who wish to be helped, educate those who ask. But don't preach, even your close family members may end up resenting you and making your life difficult. Stay healthy.

      I feel you.... for me is a moral imperative to keep pushing in the right direction whit all the ability that I have, over and over and over again, even if my mother is angry at me etc, I keep my ground and whit calm attitude and information on my side I keep going .... 2 years of battle! the result is: my father is 100% plant based vegan and my mother is vegan 100% and plant based for about 90%!
      but even now I remember to keep bring new info and be aware of what they eat because the pressure of the enviroment is too high and here in Italy, veganism is still a taboo word, almost nobody even know the meaning of that word

      Very often, when speaking with those with dire health issues, I can see the scope of their inner emotional pain, almost palpable, driving them to miserable, slow suicides...because, that’s what it is, when those who have consumed their way to illness, HAVE the information to change, but their inner emotional state drives them to just let that take them out.
      It’s heartbreaking.

      The same is true regarding vaccines. I'm certain the reason I am so healthy at age 63 is due to only having had 3, and I had all the childhood illnesses. I'm not on any drugs and I've never spent a day sick in bed. I have a mild cold every few years and that's it. Never had a flu shot.. why would I, I've never had flu!! I do eat meat but not much and I eat fish at least 2x a week.

    Kathy Raine, so TRUE! My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer back in '86 (he passed in '88)...and his doctor advised all of us kids to CROWD our plates with vegetables and stop stop stop eating red & processed meats. I took that advice to heart and also quit dairy about 5 years ago. I feel great, have awesome energy and haven't had a sick day from work in over 10 years. It MATTERS what we eat!

    At age 66, I had a heart attack and a stent procedure. I got myself educated and within one year I was off all of my heart meds. Today, I'm 73 and see my cardiologist annually and funnily, he keeps asking me how I'm feeling. The change was truly remarkable, some of which I didn't even anticipate. I'll never go back to the Standard American Diet. ❤❤

      I completely agree. Dr. Ornish should receive the Nobel Prize in medicine for showing that clogging of arteries can be reversed! Not to mention that healthful diets help with prostate cancer and lengthens telomeres as well. If you are eligible, please nominate him to the Nobel Committee.

      Most people don't want to hear this information. If you ever work with low income families you will soon discover that they don't want to change. They want to do exactly what they desire to & then have a doctor fix them. We live in a society that does not take accountability for their own actions. Dr. Ornish published his seminal research about 20 years ago but few people even know about it. People like Dean Ornish are American societies' REAL heroes. Hollywood celebrities, many of whom never finished high school, make millions of dollars on one single movie and yet do virtually nothing for the advancement of mankind!

    Back in the 90's had met Dr.Ornish in Pittsburgh to train in his Reversing Heart Disease Program. He's an amazing doctor and has done fantastic research that has actually reversing blockage in coronary vessels. The best experience was working with some of the patients that followed his program. Some these patient were on the heart transplant list because of their grave cardiac disease. Over a 6 week program these patients
    had made remarkable progress reversing blockages in their coronary arteries greatly increasing blood flow to the heart. When talking with these patients they stated they felt better than they ever would have expected. So again nutrition plays a big role in preventing disease and also reversing it.

    I’m 61 and became vegan because of reading Dr. Ornish’s book only 5 weeks ago. I have no heart or diabetic problems…..I want to keep it that way.

      I'm only on day 10. Like you I am not aware of any heart of diabetes issues but I do suffer from anxiety so was starting to worry about my blood pressure. I already feel so different and I've lost several kg (some of that was probably excess food in my system of course).

      @@markseymour8365 I have since learned that up to 70% of arteries can be blocked without any noticeable symptom. My blood pressure has dropped dramatically since I became a vegan. I ate like a typical American my whole life so no doubt my arteries are most likely full of plaque. I hope my body is removing it now.

    Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease was the beginning of my vegan lifestyle. That was in 1991. I gave a copy to my brother who showed little interest and subsequently suffered a debilitating heart attack as did my second brother. At 75 I know I cannot live forever but I want to preserve that most precious of gifts - good health. Maybe along the way I can also help the planet.

    We would do well as a nation to try this for a few months. We've tried the meat & dairy diet, and it didn't work. Do whatever plant-based "diet" you want, call it whatever you want, just eat no meat/dairy, and as many fruits and veggies as you can, see how different you feel, and how fast you heal.

      Also watch What the Health and Game Changers, both documentaries are on Netflix and are excellent. But the best motivation to be vegan is that the innocent animals do not deserve to be exploited, tortured and murdered, but that is what happens to them. We cause them tremendous suffering. That cannot be ok.

      I was without meat for only twenty-seven years. I never told anyone give it up. I eat raw grassfed home fermented meat now. I feel so much better than the last seven years of vegan & my labwork proved it!
      I really feel for Ornish of the TedX though. His brother is horrible. Poor thing to probably have grown up with him. Same with me. My sister poisoned & beat me many times in the best predatory ways. No wonder I always had a heart for the animals, as I write this to you between my two older beautiful strong dogs.

    A most insightful TED Talk by Dean Ornish, MD. He shows himself to be a very sensitive and intelligent man. Low fat diets? That's his philosophy and not mine. But this doesn't dissuade me from appreciating a powerful talk like this one.

      +Tomas Nofziger He mentioned low "animal fat" based diet...he never even mentioned exactly WHAT people should be eating, as far as any 'food pyrmid" might be concerned. His talk was about making lifestyle changes...period. Did he mention that a diet based on the consumption of animal flesh is deleterious to human health? Yes, he did. Did he state facts about the overall cost on all levels of a diet based on the consumption of animal flesh? Yes, he did. I never heard him say anything about going totally vegan though.
      It is known now that there are some really important fats that we really need to eat, some of which are incredibly important for the health of our brains. But those fats mostly come from plants such as raw nuts and seeds, avacado and similar plants.
      Overall though, I agree with you.

    Oh yeah! I've gone 80% vegan! I've lost 15lb in the past two months, have 3x as much energy, need less sleep and you know what else? mosquitoes leave me alone when I avoid dairy! Who knew??

      My life totally and completely changed when I changed from a typical American diet to a Pesco Vegetarian diet. I am now changing to a 100% Vegan diet. On my Pesco Vegetarian diet, I ELIMINATED 3 medications...THREE. My weight and BMI is fantastic. I have chronic pain w/ortho and neuro causes, but, they are much better since I switched in 2013

    Some here have a bug up their ass re Ornish. Do you feel the same way about Esselstyn, Barnard, Campbell, McDougall and the many other well-spoken advocates for whole-food plant-based diets, (all of whom are healthy, fit & trim into their middle-age & senior years)?

      they all seem like very nice well-meaning fairly healthy medical doctors and the diet they are promoting is a puzzle to me, because You can find other MD's like Ron Rosedale, David Perlmutter, Andreas Eenfeldt, Peter Attia, Jeff Volek, Loren Cordain or clever guys like Gary Taubes, Joseph Mercola, Dan Lieberman, Mark Sisson, Timothy Noakes that will tell you something completely different. It's a mystery!

      I'm actually a bit frustrated with not being able to find the "truth" about diets. It seems a bit ridiculous that all these nice, well-meaning, intelligent people can't agree. All the while the official guidelines are totally wrong and the pharma industry is having a blast on our expense.

      FrekeOne There are 3 diet categories; 1/The diet you grow up with. If you don't have any problems with it, it's likely your diet for life. 2/The diet you change to, to fix problems caused by #1. This can keep changing according to results, or lack thereof. 3/The diet your rational mind tells you is "better" for your future, even tho you have no current problem. This is the diet most subject to argument: Will you live longer? Never get sick? Will _I_ tell _your_ gravestone "I told so so" on my 100th birthday lying on the beach in Hawaii, or will _you_ tell _mine_? We don't know. Just be sincere, don't BS me, don't BS yourself. (I don't mean that you're BSing, but so many others are.)

      FrekeOne these nice well meaning people have a religious approach to their 'truth' the standard diet is so bad, that any changes can produce improvements, 'proving' their 'truths'
      consider this approach, animals live strong to old age, old ones are stronger than young ones, guided by their tongue,
      our tongue favours sugar, eat some fruit, our tongue favours fat, eat fats that hunter gatherers had access to, the same fats that our body converts carbohydrates to, but not as ground meat, which ruptures the cells and oxidizes the omega 3's etc.

His greatest and most important discovery ROCKETING HIN ahead of his peers is the fact that he is making head way to get the money following into his programs. There are power more powerful. that an one ca imagine. In my personal opinion factions with in the AMA and FDA are real criminals and I say this as a Criminal Trial Attorney for 43 years. I thank Dr..Jason Fang's incredible work, DR. Stephan Gundry MD,F.AC.S. F.AC.C.incredible work, Dr. Norman Walker who has discoveries that are yet to be noticed and talked about by this and all the others but that would speed up the incredible results seen here with these great doctors.     1) No, but according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): Taking the energy value of the meat produced into consideration, the loss of calories by feeding the cereals to animals instead of using the cereals directly as human food represents the annual calorie need for more than 3.5 billion people.
    2) Did you forget that we talk about the grain production for farmed animals, that is happening right now?
    3) Google "Rainforest Meat Production"
    4) Google "Greenhouse Meat Production"

      And that "grain" is now Round-up Ready soybeans not healthy for any animal or the planet. No cow is meant to eat soybean greens! And the farmers have already had to Double the herbicides they use for weeds because the weeds have already mutated against it! And that was what I read 2 years ago. I read a cattle/dairy pamphlet that assured the farmer that that behavior was "normal". NO it isn't! They are tortured until they are killed. Period.

    "Our genes are our predisposition but our genes are not our fate."
    This is such a powerful statement! When my mother got diagnosed with brain tumor last year, I was adamant to find a healthier lifestyle for myself since I presumed that I'm predisposed to cancer as well. Since then, I've tried my best to adapt a plant-based diet. It's not easy but definitely worth it.
    Many thanks to you and your colleagues, Dr Ornish. You have truly changed my life.

    Good man who talks a lot of sense. I would point out, however, that my angioplasty 6 years ago stopped my angina with no reoccurrence. I have become vegan, haven't touched alcohol for 3 years and do reasonable exercise for a 69 year old. The angioplasty cost me nothing, free on the U.K. National Health Service. The stents(2) would have cost £1800 let alone the hospital costs. The same operation in the USA costs around $150k which has to be paid for by the patient or his insurers.

      You are deluding yourself in perpetrating the myth that your medical care was somehow free. You and your fellow tax payers pay for you state sponsored medical care. You have no choice, only one choice. In America, we pay for the type of medical plan we want. Competition and the free market is the basis for American economic success, not corrupt governmental socialism.

    Why does it take so many professionals to change a persons diet? Maybe just a trained food specialist and possibly an addiction counselor, who can teach healthy food prep and abstinence of unhealthy choices for those who want to get to better health through diet and healthy living.

    When will the medical establishment catch up? You expect some ignorance, unfortunately, from purely allopathic practitioners. But even "functional MDs" and "holistic MDs" have balked at my being vegan. They wish I would at least eat eggs and fish. My newest doctor (family practitioner) thinks I should follow a keto diet. It's all very frustrating, because doctors are still seen as authority figures, so people follow their bad advice. What happened to "first, do no harm?" I see harm all over the place, even in 2020. This video was from 8 years ago. Thanks to doctors like this for calling out the truth, but I can't wait for the day when this is finally the accepted wisdom.

    Very insightful talk. In 2012. Unfortunately, this has simply gone in one ear and out the other. Today, obesity, diabetes, hypertension are still ballooning, and now covid-19 is wreaking havoc on these individuals. But people still blame and look to the government, medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry for salvation.

    I agree with anything that prevents and reverses disease but I think everyone should take a good hard look actually how our stomach, the thing that digests our food Down to the functions and the meterials needed to do this job is all depending on the stomach PH and acidity. Everyone is running to their dr being put on PPIs then because they were diagnosed with Gerd or acid reflux disease and this is what people think heartburn comes from? Google what makes lower esophageal sphincter close and then ask why isn't it closing?? If you don't have proper ph In your stomach you can't even break your food Down. This causes malabsorption. Deficiency, Illness and disease. It's from all the crap we put into our made from all kinds of things that effect the stomach from doing the job God created it for. Some will think but if you eat a good diet then your stomach acid and stomach function will reboot the Massive number of Things it needs to do but first people need to be told the truth about stomach acid. Gerd and heartburn don't mean you have high amounts of stomach acid! It's more likely it's low stomach acid. It's called Hypochlorhidria. Google that too. Before we eat anything we need to learn the importance of how the mouth. Saliva. And chewing, and how the nose, mouth brain and gut all communicate to create the stomach acid to digest exactly what we are about to eat. How many people on PPIs with no heart burn but lots of deficiency issued and a worsening all issues except they don't have heart burn. Seems this is not as well talked about but most important subject not talked about? Why? Why? $$$!$$ !!!! Our great Drs are causing all this shit because this is a major piece of the puzle they don't have a clue about !!! Look up obesity and lepti resistant. Look up the fuctions of leptin effects on stomach and the brain, look up Pepsin function In the gut and how stomach acid works with Pepsin. Ask yourself what does tums and Rolaids do to the acid, what does water do to the acid if Drunk while eating a meal. This is key to realizing all the processed junk poison we eat is causing everything. Then I think people will realize what's going on and why.

      When people stop eating so much acidic animal foods, the acid reflux disappears. I was on Nexium for ten years, and was able to stop it after switching to a vegan diet.

    1lb of beef requires 8-16lbs of grain and 2000 gallons of water vs 110 gallons for corn. Grass fed is far worse. Consider the fact you're goal is higher quality fat by feeding a cow something that decreases it's fat stores. Flax would have been much easier. Humans like any animal; are drawn to calories, ie fat. We cannot eat fat and remain healthy like cats, because cats can bypass fat more effectively than humans. Not to mention cancer gene expression and IGF production.

    All plants and animals consumed and available today are a far cry from their counterparts of yesteryear. This is one trouble with using evolutionary studies of diets to come up with a 'unified' diet usable today. Plants have been cultivated to be both tasty, and easily digested for nutrients. Animals foods today are much different as well. Fish is probably the one exception, but even fish haven't been consumed by all human genomes that have developed, so it's not a strong example either.

    Have a healthy social life, intermittent fasting ("the one that you stick with for the rest of your life"), and sleep eight hours a day. 750 minutes of exercise a week (swimming, tai chi, strength training, walking, and kegel exercises), or two hours and five minutes a day for 6 days a week. Floss and brush teeth twice a day. Shower as frequently as you sweat for good hygiene. No drugs, no alcohol, and no smoking.

    An average size cow eats 20lbs of grain a day and they are kept alive an average of 18 months before slaughter.That amount of food could feed far more people than the cow itself.

    There are still uncountable ignorants out there who shameless discredit Dr Ornish' service to mankind. Everytime when I stumble over an idiotic, anecdotal video with "science" on the keto/atkins/low carb diet, it reminds me of tobacco advertisements of the past. A pinch of doubt towards established nutrition is sufficient to promote their toxic keto message.

    I totally get how having a vegan lifestyle is healthier, but those of you on here who throw insults towards meat eaters sound like people who fuss over religion or no religion. People are diverse and so are the ways that they choose to live! I have been diagnosed with an enlarged heart recently. I am researching diets and have come to the conclusion that as of now, I just can't go cold turkey on meat! Although people who eat a plant based diet do seem to live longer, they still die! I just don't care for beating up folks souls because they choose not to live like me! Besides, I will listen better if you do not dog me than if you do! Give the knowledge without judgement and I guarantee you that more people will hear it! Plant based diets work! I have seen it, but breaking habits is not easy. If you think I am lying check the insults towards those who do not follow a plant based lifestyle! It is what humans do, but it doesn't help! Eating food can be more mental than many of you understand or wish to understand. Everyone is not where you all are mentally!
