Both my kids ran hurdles and their coach put them in the 4x400 as well. I thought that was a great idea - helped a lot with conditioning and confidence for the 300H. Timing was perfect too, 100/110H at the start of the meet, 300H in the middle and 4x400 at the end. Also I definitely agree with not putting kids in 100/110H races until they are comfortably 4-stepping at least - just do open 100 or 200 until then to work on starts and speed. I'm enjoying your videos, thanks for posting them!

Thanks! I recently hired someone to edit my videos and make my thumbnails. He’s obviously way better at it than I am!

I do 5 steps. Im a dancer and all ive ever done was leap with my right leg in front. My coach said i’d train for hurdles this year and compete next year but had me run 55m hurdles at the first meet on low hurdles. Then made me do the highs next meet. Ive done them at every single meet. My mom was upset. Right now im thinking about telling my coach to stop putting me in hurdles at meets. I want to focus on high jump bc my performance has been really bad lately compared to last year, but i will train for them still. Is that a good idea?

Your plan is good. I would suggest expressing these feelings to your coach and hope they are understanding.

As a hurdler in the past. You don't train to jump with both legs but drills need to be done for both legs when applicable. If you only train one leg its going to lead to hip plates being off and future back problems for your hurdler. Trust me on this. Balance is important.

Mistake number one is what led me to an injured and bloody knee. It is has never been the same 28 years later. My coach made us practice in 35mph winds…running with the wind. A gust of wind carried me over the hurdle faster than I was anticipating which meant my trail leg wasn’t fully in place. It ended up hooking onto the hurdle and I went flying into our cinder track. Terrible experience.

I assume you live in a pretty nice climate. My athletes wouldn't do much racing early season if they waited for good weather. And we have club team competitions that I'm not going to pull anyone from unless they're just too good to bother. For the U14 / U16 kids... well at least two per team have to do hurdles. If they can't 4-step (yet), then 5-step it is. As long as they learn it the proper way during training, a few 5-step races won't undo the good work.

Good feedback! You’re right, it’s gonna be different in different situations. When I made this video, I was coaching in Colorado, where most kids didn’t do indoor track. I’ve since moved to the Midwest, where I see how common it is for Indoors. You’re right, it changes things a lot.

I run 110 hurdles and then the 4 by 2 is that acceptable?

I think that’s ok, I think maybe he is talking about running any really intense races right before hurdles, but as long as your not hurdling right after another race u should be good
