The Sims 1 feels like a depression simulator. You struggle to stay connected with people, productive tasks are hard when not in a good mood, you make and do lots of meth.
And you just sleep and "vibrate" for fun...

Fun Fact! In an interview, Will Wright, lead developer of the Sims 1, stated that this was his intention. In the early game, taking care of your Sim was difficult, but not impossible, and the catalogue of items for dealing with your Sim's needs paved a clear path forward. However, in the late game, it would turn out that maintaining all of these gadgets and gizmos would be a more difficult challenge than simply staying in the early game. It was satire on how modern materialism presents itself as the solution to our need for creature comforts, but has created a supply chain that over time requires more labour to maintain. Wright came up with the Sims after his house burnt down, so, uh, I'm going to stop, because this fact isn't fun anymore.

the earlier sims games were so fun and chaotic but it’s so hard to have your sim be a functioning member of sim society without them constantly being on the brink of death

You just need to know what to do, and also arriving at the top of career is not always the best imo. It will change eventually in another career, and sometimes is even wors. There is a lvl 7 or 8 career (I think hacker?) It basically gives more time at home, and the card event is one that gives tons of money. I ended up avoiding a promotion because this is the best case scenario.
I always used cheats in TS1, and later decided to play cheatless in TS2, which was difficult but manageable. When I went back to TS1 without cheats, it was pretty much impossible. Needs and relationships decay insanely fast. Even being a celebrity doesn't pay that well compared to the effort your sim puts in. They're basically half-dead when they get home from Studio Town after doing 3 gigs (and they don't even get paid if you fail the minigame)

in my head i thought the reason why playing the sims 1 as a 7 year old was so hard was due to the fact that i was a child playing a fairly complex game with many different things to look out for, but now i realize that i was a child being handed the keys to a nuclear power plant ready to go off at any second
I'll have you know nuclear power plants are very safe and stable, unlike The Sims 1.

Love how in Sims 3/4 they have relatable and accurate needs and goals, but Sims 1/2 sims cannot do anything without dying and taking the whole community down with them
you can almost say the games follow the development of a human life. 1-2 high dependecy child age, 3-4 low dependency teenage to adulthood

I don't remember Sims being so difficult when I used to play it, but watching these videos, I don't know how the hell I ever managed it. I guess because we didn't have anything to compare it to.
The burglar stealing your suits of armor hurt! I did a black widow game where I built a gothic castle funded only by dead husbands. I remember the armor costing a husband each!

I played back when I was little, and it felt like playing on a timer. A race to see what I could do before they got depressed. I skipped the walls one time, and usually the floor, to save money. Was a rough game tho.
These types of videos give you a skewed impression given Kevin is basically intentionally messing up to be funny. It wasn't actually that hard, though the friend grind certainly got tedious after a while.

I remember when I first inserted this game CD ROM in my comp and then spent hours trying to get it to work. When it did finally work I was rewarded with the hardest game of all time.
I remember acquiring the base game along with several expansion packs, before I even had a computer to play them on…lol

The day I discovered death by guinea pig in Sims 1 was the day that my whole play style changed from desperate 8 year old trying to be a benevolent god to full on maniacal overlord. Also my sound card couldn't handle the sneezing, which made it much more horrific.

I'd argue that the Sims 1 is the most accurate to real life; with how hard it is to balance everything, keep happy/sane and healthy, having money, and staying alive 😂

I love how he was constantly losing money buying and selling fences instead of just placing them somewhere else.
Actually beating the sims 1 may be a quite difficult challenge, but luckily Kevin has figured out a brilliant work-around.
After all, if you torture and/or kill everyone in sight, everyone will be too frightened or too dead to claim you didn’t beat the game. Kevin truly is a military genius!

The last time I downloaded this game, I realized how hard it was. Then I wondered how at the age of 9, I had somehow mastered this whole game, had a 5 star celebrity and even lived in Magic town because I had mastered magic too lmao. I do remember playing for HOURS and my dad getting mad at me for that. I also remember having to figure out the exact sequence you need to interact with people so they don't get annoyed with you so you could be friends lol I don't have the patience anymore.
Fun fact the living room WAS actually referred to as the death room till the early 1900s as the deceased were kept there for mourning/for loved ones to say goodbye.

Played sims as a kid, my parents came in one day to see me making a church for the town/village/area, which obviously needed to have a graveyard, to get all the gravestones and ghosts and such I moved 8 person families into lot which had a single building filled with flammable furniture and fireplaces, burning them all to death before moving their graves to the graveyard ready for the next victims to be moved in, I had about 40 graves outside.
Kevin's sim is honestly very similar to the story of Walter White

So as strange as it sounds, when I was younger I found the best way to get family friends was befriend a ton of kids. They’re much lower maintenance and I’ve always found them easier to befriend.
Just go to a vacation lot and wait for them to show up, befriend them, and they’ll count.

As a kid playing this for the first time when it was released, I always found the extreme apathy of the “Okay” or “Cancel” options so hysterical. Particularly with some of the more wtf game moments. “Bob, do you canoe?”

I'm only surprised that it took until the third video in this series before Kevin had his Sims quit their jobs and start trapping people in their house until the whole neighborhood dies.
He really did try for them to have a happy and normal life. But them he remenbered hes playing with Jim Pickens and the only way he can be happy is by trapping people in his house and watch them slowly wither away. He just cant change his nature, no matter how much he tries (though, being honest, he didnt try that hard).
The fact that Kevins seems suprised every time pure chaos unleashes, make this video even funnier

Fun fact, the baby screaming in this game was intentionally created to be as obnoxious as they could, to ensure that players wouldn't ignore the babies.
These playthroughs bring back so many memories haha. Kevin saying they got out of bed to pee then fall asleep in the pee really describes the gameplay well
I remember being 12 and having to explain to my mum that locking my adult sim and the baby in a room with just the bare basics to survive was the optimal way to raise a baby without it ending up being taken away. Now at 25 years old wondering how I ever had the patience to play this game
I don't remember the Sims 1 being so hard but then again I always just cheated money, bought fancy crap and in the end trapped everyone to kill them with fire

The sims need a social warm up before kissing, even when they are romantically involved. Queue up a couple of friendly interactions before skipping to the romantic ones.

I still play Sims 1 because I still love it, it's tougher and crazier than later Sims games. Sims in Sims 1 are so funny, situations are often so ridiculous and your game can get fucked in a couple of seconds. Plus soundtrack is a masterpiece.

its hard to rizz. its hard to keep your motives up. its hard to have a kid. when you do have a kid its hard to keep them from the social worker. its hard to travel without the game breaking. its hard to get a job. its hard to make friends. its hard to cook without killing your entire family. its hard to exist in the sims 1. its hard to open the sims 1. its hard to download the sims 1. heck at that time the sims 1 probably felt impossible to make

About a minute and a half in, and the baby being taken right away brings back fond memories of locking a single jobless sim in a room with that damn baby with all the necessities they'd need to stay happy until it aged up
