I don’t think back then I ever expected 20 years later my favorite setup would be an 8.25 w/ Thunder 149’s and 58mm wheels

I’ve been spoilt as I rode to school in 78 on 70 mm kryptonics reds and a Wes humpson big foot board (10 inch wide ) great because my family moved. 7 miles from my school .so 14 miles a day .I learned to skate . Still skate today but mostly my electric board 35 mph .brilliant up hill .i do skateboard 🛹 a regular one in the park today as I’m only 61 years old 😂
i have a bunch of low-mid 40mm wheels from the '90s, but they're mostly pretty wide like 35-40mm. i would absolutely hate those. i don't like my axle nuts exposed, and wider wheels are generally smoother
Damn! You skated those so good! If you get a chance, check out the Snot Lil Wide boys. I have them in a 48mm in 83B. They're surprising smooth at my fairly rough skatepark, especially for such a small and hard wheel. I think the wider riding surface helps a lot. I also like them bc they cover the axel nut, pretty sweet for slappies. They'd probably be a bit better for locking in too.

I love the old clips of Rodney Mullen riding on his tiny 39mm wheels, both you and him are making me want to try them. The smallest I've ever rode was 52mm, and dealt with a lot of the differences that you're mentioning. Personally I think small wheels are really good for getting tech, especially things like manuals, since the slower speed gives you more control and more time to react. That being said, I'm more of a street skater, so I like larger wheels so I can glide over bumps and cracks. I definitely found that my flat ground/flip tricks were a lot better with small wheels, though. I can see them being good for a skater that wants to focus more on stuff like freestyle or park skating.

I think I get a higher ollie with bigger wheels because the angle of the tail is steeper. You need a little more oomph, though. Of course, there is a point of diminishing returns. My sweet spot is 53-57, though I have gone as high as 60.
I bought the 66.6mm big beatdowns on the other end of the spectrum and they’re fun but they’re heavy lol and there’s so much surface on the wheel that I slipped on a skate lite quarter pipe on a misty night

Positives of skating small wheels. Closer to the ground and lighter. Those aren’t really things I’m trying to get out of my set up. I basically like only rough street spots. I hate smooth surfaces
I got the 62mm with no risers back in February 😹 I absolutely hate the classic shape but had to get them just to troll (and I ended up breaking my wrist first sesh with them)

In the 90s we had these sizes and rode any ground. Not saying it was good ! Pebbles were a big problem 😂 Did help with flip tricks though! Nice review man!!
Try getting a bigger truck size and have your bolt sticking out just a slight bit so your wheels are actually at the edge of the board and tucked under

40mm SML wheels. The pros didn't outweigh the cons for me lol
38mm Santa Cruz leftovers… had to push 20 times to do one trick… next size was 50mm and I stayed at that size from 1993 until 1999
Smallest wheels I know of are Snot lil boogers 48mm and I would still only use 51mm as the smallest wheel size but they are alot of fun though
We used to cut our wheels down with a circle saw..ha ha they were so small..

@@adamgonesage 1/8" should do it on a regular board, 60mm with no risers usually works fine even with loose trucks, you just use a little wax.
