I was in Japan this month, I'm 6'5" so I got a lot of stares. I just ignored them and kept it moving but my lady noticed it more than I did. If you stand out in a foreign country, just be prepared for stares and comments but if you can't handle it, remain in your home country.

There's starring because they are nosy. Or starring to intimidate and then possibly inflict harm.

I've traveled internationally, in Italy and had men approach me and chat me up even though I didn't speak much Italian. I've also had men chase me down the street in other countries as well, lets say they are much more direct and not afraid to approach you. I heard many years ago that men in Italy often stare at women and will pinch. I didn’t dig deeper because I wasn’t planning on going there.
I did a semester in France (the ‘80’s) and encountered a good deal of men (French and other nationalities) who approached me (I was shocked by how aggressive a couple were.) I also encountered a few men/women who were racists (The French have been known to have xenophobics - they only like the French way.). One salesperson was somewhat standoffish and rude until she realized I was American.
I also just walked into the French Vogue reception one day (trying to do an internship), and the people were very nice.
I believe you take a chance on encountering some form of racism wherever you go, just like you might when you leave your home in America. I recommend doing the research before you travel so you’re better informed.
One thing I have learned is to also avoid looking lost, predators will pounce on that and try you.

I had like two or 3 African women not only stare at me intently but touch my hair. I am Queen Latifa's complexion just as a reference. No one said hello, they stared at me like I was an object. I felt invisible. I asked my friend who is black American and lived there at the time. I said, "What are they doing?" He said they like your hairstyle and they are going to copy it. I had my hair in a flat twist updo. I was like whatever and remained until they took their notes or whatever. After I left, two weeks later, my friend told me that he saw a woman walk down the street with my exact same hairstyle. Lol I was like man, I understood Spanish culture, but I wasn't prepared for this but for me it was all good. I was just taken a back at the moment.

Some of you Americans need to understand that YOU are in THEIR country. Many Europeans stare. That's what a lot of them do. How about doing some research on the culture(s) and people(s) before going to your destination of interest. Just because it is rude to stare in America does not mean it is the same in other countries.

Soo if you and the person is in the same area for 10, 15 even 20 minutes they are just going to keep staring so your best advice is to let them. That is freaking weird and I don’t care if that’s what they do in their country. How about this educate yourself on the difference between looking and just being weird?

For your information I know the difference, and it still does not matter. Even if one LOOKS at another wrong it's weird. Knowing the difference is not going to prevent people from staring (or even looking) at another.

@@bornlikethis7536 people stare for various reasons - someone is pretty or handsome, dresses nice, never seen a black person before (or never seen a Black American, as many foreigners can tell the difference between Black Africans and Black Americans, and are pretty good at it), out of disgust, out of hatred, and the list goes on. I know it matters to others, and yes it sucks, it's uncomfortable, it's weird, but it's not worth getting into trouble for.
