After all the boring and long read from the textbook, this is "parting of the clouds moment" for me listening to you and making it easy to understand. Thank you Adriana
Banjo, I am so please that this video was what helped you to understand the team development stages! You are so very welcome and thank you for watching and commenting, cheers!
Thanks for doing this video, Adriana. I love the enthusiastic way you explained the Tuckman model. So simple, yet you've done a great job at being thorough about what might be happening or what people can expect. Thanks for the generosity of sharing your knowledge!
This is a super video featuring a classic Team development model that everyone can benefit from learning. Adriana, you have a knack for drilling down to the important bits, using great examples, and making content very applicable, not to mention, so much more interesting! I love your bubbly presentations! Thank-You!
Thank you for watching Maren. I feel it's very important that team leads know what their team will go thru so they effectively move thru each stage to reach a positive project outcome. We love yoda too, he's just one of our mascots:) Cheers!
Having a good understanding of the tuckman model and a clear breakdown on the stages of teams is a must for any PM. Thanks for your feedback and for watching, Cheers!
Great enthusiasm as always Adriana! You definitely make these topics easier to follow with your style and approach. I've taken a lot from this, and really got me thinking about my own team! Great video!
Thank you Suzanne. It's always wonderful receiving such positive feed back not just on the content but on how I deliver the information as well. I am so happy that the team development video was useful information for you. As always, thank you for watching, Cheers!
Great question! One of the best things you can do at the Forming stage is to inject team building exercises to build relationships and help the team get to know each other. I have some great team building activities you can check out here on YT. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Oh yes I have experienced a couple, but this one happened about 2 years ago. So it started when I was informally promoted by my manager to take on more responsibilities and I need to keep everyone in line as I am the experienced one and also as I am the one with loads of managerial experience regarding project and teams and insuring quality and standards are met. Basically this one team consisting of two guys was being hard up. Took critical critique so personally so that I had to call in my executive manager. Long story short the bar was set straight by myself, but yet again this whole issue persisted because they weren't notified which is mistake number one. Not long after they left the company as they could not keep up with the standards set out, even though everyone else pushed through and learned a lot from me and grew a lot. I guess that was just another wat of eliminating the weak links hey.
Thank you so much for the great feedback Roberta! Knowledge and understanding of team development is really important for PM’s to have. Thanks for watching, Cheers!
Great video outlining all the team development stages! I have been on a number of project teams and have experienced all these development stages. One of those teams actually did get to the Performing stage and it was fabulous. We really performed as a unit and you could count on everyone. One of the other teams I was part of never made it out of Storming stage and it was terrible...couldn't wait for that project to finish. The project manager didn't call people out on their hidden agendas.
Thank you for sharing your team development experiences. I think it's safe to say that remaining in the storming stage is not a place anyone wants to remain in for too long. Thanks for watching, Cheers!
Thanks Ali, no matter what a team is doing or who is involved they will always go thru some form of these team development stages. Thanks for watching, Cheers!
Hi, during a project and you're in the storming phase, do you call them out in front of the whole team? Here's an example: During a project charter meeting I've been stopped and asked if the charter was necessary. That they feel it's a waste of time. I've explained the goal of it, and essentially, this is our process to ensure we're all rowing in the same boat, and have goals and a vision of where we all need to end up. After several bouts of interruption and frustrated body language from this person, we ended the meeting successfully but at a weird vibe in the room. It also seemed really odd when this person was in the meeting and others seemed to lean back and not contribute. Eventually, I talked to this person 1x1 and seemed to go ok, but it still gave a weird vibe throughout the project. I was sooooo happy when it was over!
The tuckman model can really transfer into any team environment, sales, manufacturing, anywhere a team is brought together for a project. Thanks so much for watching, Cheers!
Tuckman's is a nice model (aside from the overblown 'storming' phase) but it fails to deal with the individuals who comprise the 'team' or group. The model seeks to profile the group qua group, but the manager/leader/chairman needs to be aware of the process that each member keeps cycling through while they find their place in the group. Pellerin's 4-D system is of some practical help in this. The model also seems more like one of Bion's T group's life rather than an outcome focused business group where 'storming' can be a brief period of mutual adjustment in respect of an agenda and outcomes sought. Most project teams in project industries come together like Legos as everyone knows their role, expectations and contribution.
Thanks for sharing! Adding someone/something new to stage definitely has me repeating some staged. But it's okay as you said, you'll move through the process again quite quickly!
It's really important that everyone understands that when there is a change your team will need to repeat some stages but yes, it usually does move back through quite quickly:) Thanks for tuning in Theresa! Cheers!
Hi Sergei. These came from Dr Bruce Tuckman’s team development model. He was an American Psychological Researcher. Regarding a good book on Team development....there are tons so anyone would be insightful. Cheers!
Hello Adriana Girdler! I like your video. Would a question be possible? If so, I would like to know if it is important/interesting that the group/team is aware of the phase in which it is? Should the coach/facilitator inform the group the phase in which he (the group) is? Thank you very much in advance, Geremias Cilião de Araujo Junior (Campo Mourão/Paraná/Brazil)
First teach everyone the stages and what to look for and then ask the group what stage does everyone think they are in. As time progresses or things come up, bring up the stages and us it as a reflection exercise. Hope this helps.
Thanks for watching my new team development stages video! Let me know what your biggest take-away was?
My biggest takeaway was how the team can be disrupted when a new person joins- whether it's a new member or a new leader.
After all the boring and long read from the textbook, this is "parting of the clouds moment" for me listening to you and making it easy to understand. Thank you Adriana

Yes…you call them out in front of the team in a professional and respectful manner. Sound like that is exactly what you did. Good Job!
Such great tips!!! This is super applicable even in my direct sales team! Thanks!
