Never been to Japan, so my impression is very simple and possibly wrong. I think the respect for seniority over accomplishment or ability in Japan is weird. You're young, why do you think it's appropriate to dismiss a young hard working smart individual in favor of some old person who may be stuck in his ways?
Some Japanese think about the same thing. But It's easy way to live for some Japanese (who have lazy mind).
That's way We still have this culture.
