This song is based on the love story of Sohni-Mahiwal, a young couple with a tragic end. The girl Sohni overpowered by her love tried to reached her lover on an unbaked earthen pot across the raging River Chenab (in Pakistan). But she unfortunately succumbed to the furious waves and drowned. Her lover Mahiwal seeing her drowning also jumped in the river and he also drowned. You can google Sohni-Mahiwal for details of this love story.

This song is based on true story of soni mahiwal
Soni meet mahiwal every night with a clay pot by swiming river chanaab but day her brother wife change the pot and put unbaked clay when soni went to river with pot in half way the pot melt and soni drowned in river from far mahiwal sees and jump in the river and also drowned and the love story ends
