My Dad, a Sergeant with the 101st Airborne, 506 PIR (A Toccoa man who jumped into France the night before D-Day, survived Operation Market Garden and Bastogne and was wounded for his third and final time during the attack on Foy) would never talk about his experiences during the war. I mean he would talk about things that had nothing to with the actual fighting, funny stories about him and his buddies, but never about the horrors of combat. My Dad did open up to me some, once I like him, had experienced combat, but it was through Stephen Ambrose's excellent book and the follow on Mini-series "Band of Brothers" that I really began to understand his experiences.
As a side note the Toccoa Camp is about an hour north of where I live in Georgia. Back in 2002, before my father passed away, we ran (well jogged) 3 miles up and 3 miles down Currahee side by side! It was amazing!

The gentlemen being interviewed at the beginning are the men being depicted in the series. They are identified at the end of the series. They do not want you to know which of the men were killed and which of them survived. This series is WONDERFUL and TERRIBLE at the same time. You’re in for an emotional ride. Absolutely worth every minute. ❤️

Why did she need to be told this information? This is something she would've learned on her own from watching the show. And this is a reaction channel. Why not let her learn that information from the show she's reacting to ON CAMERA instead of learning it from an unnecessary comment OFF CAMERA? Because that'd be one more reaction we viewers of reaction channels could be treated to.

And honestly, people like to (or at least used to) bash and laugh at Schwimmer because he was goofy Ross and a few other goofy roles but he really is a fantastic actor. 3:32 Just a bit of a correction. Weekend passes as the name implies, allows you to go off-base to have some R&R but it doesn't have the effects that you might be thinking about. Your passes could in fact be revoked for infractions or failing to meet standards, yes.
But for most of these men, they couldn't just "go home" for the weekend. Maybe for those that did have relatives or family in the area or Georgia; where Easy Company trained at Camp Toccoa.
Minor fun fact, Private Malarkey is from Oregon where I'm from. So in his case, for example, a weekend pass to get him home to see family wouldn't be possible. Especially back in the 40s since air and land travel was not as fast as today.

The British had the parachute regiments nicknamed the red devils and some other specialist units alongside glider regiments However was still relatively early days for them as well.

There is a reason I make sure to show parts of this series to my history classes. It is so well done in all aspects, and it just pulls you in from the start. You absolutely have to react to the documentary "We Stand Alone, Together" IMMEDIATELY after you finish this series! It is all the clips of the veterans interviews that you see before the episodes (and more), and you find out who each person is.
A couple of pretty good actors you either missed or edited out your comments for noticing them:
Michael Cudlitz - He plays "Bull" Randleman, the guy who says "Lt. Sobel hates us." He has been in a lot of stuff over the years, but is probably best known for playing Abraham in The Walking Dead.
Donnie Wahlberg - He plays Carwood Lipton, the guy who had the thread on his patch that Schwimmer called out at the beginning. He is the older brother of Mark Wahlberg AND he was part of the boy band New Kids on the Block in the late-80's and early-90's. He was also the patient that shoots Bruce Willis's character at the beginning of The Sixth Sense.
Neil McDonough - He plays "Buck" Compton, they guy Winters chews out in the jeep for gambling with the men as an officer. He is most notable for his role in the Arrow tv show, as well as playing opposite The Rock in Walking Tall. He's been in a bunch of stuff also.

The colonel was played by Capt. Dale Dye, U.S.M.C. (retired) who was also the military advisor on the show as well as many other military-themed films and tv shows. He can be seen in Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan and even in Starship Troopers. He is the go-to guy for helping keep accuracy in military stories being filmed.
Most recruits went to certain bases around the U.S. for basic training and advanced training (Jump School, Officer Candidate School, etc.), so almost no one ever got to go home on their passes. They would just get off base for a set period of time to relax, get drunk, find and romance girls at the USO, or whatever.
The book that this is based on is by Stephen Ambrose and is just amazing.
It's kind of amazing how many of the cast of the show, including upcoming episodes, you will recognize...no spoilers! It's really a who's who of American and British talents.

    • @adamwhite767
      @adamwhite767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Dale Dye was a pretty beloved Marine, he and his partner were combat reporters for the military newspaper during Vietnam. They got to pick and choose where they went to do their reporting (always where the action was), but they would always fight along side the soldiers and Marines where ever they were and really earned great reputations. The fought along side other Marines in the battle of Hue City during the Tet offensive, a notoriously brutal battle.

The parachutes open immediately because it wasn't like skydiving. You don't start at 20,000 feet and slowly drift down, or nobody would be alive by the time you landed.
They dropped as low as possible, and if you didn't know how to land properly, you'd still break your legs and shit. They usually landed with the same force as jumping off a two story building.

Colonel Winters went to my highschool in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was visiting once, just privately, and I heard he was there. I ran and found him and shook his hand. He had a cane with the screaming eagle emblem on it.

David Schwimmer said in an interview once that he could understand where Sobel was coming from - he was older than most of the guys, a middle class guy from Chicago, a Jew tasked with training a new military unit in Georgia, one of the most racist places in the U.S.
That he must have felt both beheath and above those guys, and that was the reason for his pedantry.
I think he was not a good combat leader, but one hell of a drill sergeant.

If nobody has answered your "Ross" question, this was filmed while Friends was still on the air. If you've seen all of the episodes of Friends, think back to the episode where Monica proposed to Chandler... well, she tried to but think about that episode where Chandler and Monica get engaged. Everyone comes over to congratulate them and celebrate with them. All but Ross, that is.
David Schwimmer was away filming Band of Brothers while they were filming that episode. So that's why Ross wasn't there, but in the very next episode (the start of the next season of Friends), Schwimmer is back, so Ross is there.
As for the scene where they're running in full gear, no it's not easy. I can tell you from experience. Running in combat boots isn't much fun, either though.
This series is probably the greatest WWII mini-series (or movie, for that matter), ever made. I watch it at least twice per year, and have done so since it came out on DVD, probably close to 20 years ago. I won't give any names away, but you're bound to be saying "Is that (fill in a star's name here?!)" more than a few times.
Great mini-series, and I'm looking to seeing it again, through your eyes.

Sobel was a great trainer. He taught them attention to detail by popping them on all those minor infractions. He really toughened them up physically and all in all was one of the major reasons Easy turned into the excellent fighting force it became. He was very petty and vindictive however, and a horrible combat leader. Winters was excellent as a combat leader and truly cared for the men under his command.

Their parachutes are being deployed by what’s called a static line.
They hook a d as sort of ripcord to the parachute to a cable running the
Length of the plane.. as soon as the jump the cord pulls out the chute and the prop blast fills the canopy. This allows them to jump from as low as three hundred feet above ground levy

Sobel in real life couldn’t let go at the fact he never got to be the leader of Easy company in the war, that he was stuck training soldiers instead of leading them.
He played with him for his whole life, he later in life tried to commit suicide but survived, but left him blind in one eye.
Many Easy company surviving members said David played Sobel very well

Interesting fact: This first episode premiered on 9/9/2001, two days before the 9/11 attacks in the USA. It is was made in a different era than the current one, one of the last artifacts of a pre- 9/11 world.

That's why a show like this is very important. It can motivate people to learn more about WWII. I know that the historical reenactment scene got a big boost in Denmark after Saving Private Ryan and this show.

This is an amazing show and I can't wait to see your reaction to all of the episodes. Not sure if anyone mentioned it already but Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks made another WW2 series about the American soldiers fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. It's really good and definitely worth watching as well. Keep up the great work :)

Refusing to serve under any officer in command of thier unit during war was a Capital punishment ie. Death penalty, so those letters to the Colonel were very serious. He could have had them all shot.

13:34 If you haven't seen it, may we all recommend Saving Private Ryan? Steve Spielberg and Tom Hanks worked on that film before they produced for this series. It depicts the beach landings of D-day. It is one of cinema's most accurate portrayals of the real invasion that did happen on June 6th, 1944

The other thing to remember is that what you are watching is a very close representation of what the surviving men of Easy Company actually experienced. That message from Gen. Eisenhower was the what he actually said.

The same team that made this made another one called The Pacific about the island hopping campaign in the western Pacific against the Japanese. It's riveting as well but much more gory and brutal. (if you can believe it.) Its ten episodes as well.

I watched your review of Saving Private Ryan. All of those dog tags that they were searching through when Wade goes over and grabs them and says "the whole damn airborne is watching you", all of those dog tags belonged to guys from the 101st and 82nd airborne. Those were the guys getting on the planes at the end of this episode. A lot of parts of Saving Private Ryan are intertwined with Band of Brothers.

It wasn't literally the first time, but it was the first war where they were used in earnest. The Germans had great success in the early war with paratroopers, but didn't have the numbers to use them anymore at this point. Brits had used em, but of course they were waiting for D-Day at this point. If u wanna see the Red Devils in action, "The Longest Day" has some solid scenes with them, as well as "A Bridge Too Far".

    • @przemekkozlowski7835
      @przemekkozlowski7835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The invasion of Crete was a the last major airborne operation the Germans executed. It only succeeded due to the incompetence of the British commander and the German paratrooper units were almost wiped out.
If the DDay landings failed, the Allied airborne divisions would have been wiped out. Even with a successful landing, some analysts predicted a 80% casualty rate for the paratroopers. The Market Garden episodes show what happens when an airborne operation does not go to plan.
