- There Erie Canal is a cyclists dream! It's flat, beautiful and it passes through towns every 10-15 miles. From Buffalo to Albany, this trail is perfect for a weeklong bike tour.
I'm excited to announce that Ali and I are riding across the USA! We're riding Trek's new gravel bikes, the Checkpoint, and the goal is to take the road less traveled in search of great people and inspiring stories. Besides profiling the wonderful people along the way, we'll be asking everyone for LOVE advice. Our route will take us from Oregon to New York and WE WANT YOU to help out. If you have any ideas of places to visit, friends to meet, or burritos to eat, find us on social media and point us in the right direction.

We’re making our way across NY on the beautiful Erie Canal Trail and everything is SO GREEN! Has anyone else ridden this trail? I wanna bring my mom here someday. Getting closer to nyc!
Great Wow Happy Health
I used to live in Syracuse. The trail can be hit or miss in terms of how well it's maintained, but overall I give it a thumbs up if you are on a hybrid/gravel/cross bike. Skinny road tires can be problematic in sports. A full mountain rig would be overkill.
Yeah, the gravel bikes were great on the Erie Canal trail!
Ryan Van Duzer How do you charge all your gadgets whiles out on tour?
Ryan Van Duzer Back east is always so green, I want to move somewhere back there. Always green, except in the winter when everything turns white. Something like Boulder. Haha
Great photography, thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks for watching
In the first video Ali said she was not a professional TH-camr. After 33 videos, she is now.
Spent the day watching all 33. Great adventure and wonderful videos. Well done guys.
All 33 in one day?? Wow!! you deserve an award :) Thanks so much for tuning into our story. But...there's 2 more, one will come out tomorrow morning, and another on Sunday.
Love this video. I teach children and youth music and teach the Erie Canal every year to my students. It tends to be a favorite. The footage of the canal is great. I did jump at the little surprise after the "haunted" section.
That’s cool!! I love the history around the canal
Lovely to be introduced to all the lovely, interesting friends you met and made on your trip across America, Thank you
My dad use to take us to the locks during Sunday drives as kids ...very remenisant ! The Erie canal trail goes on the bucket list of rides now. Thanks Ryan & Ali
Hi Ryan and Ali,great to see you 2 again in your new video.
Hello!
Ryan,
Your art talent is definitely videography! Some of the very best on the web my friend. Thanks for sharing this epic journey with us.
Thanks my friend!
Ryan great video, the canal reminds me my 2016 bike trip from Vienn to Budapest thanks for showing the great America the way you guys do keep enjoying, we are too.
Thanks for watching Carlos!
Just happened on your page. What a genuine and unique series that exemplifies the heart of America and the American spirit/ experience. Seeing you two interact and experience the countryside as you grow as a couple is so refreshing. You guys remind me of when I met my wife when we were in medical school and we spent many a weekend cycling and rock climbing across the southwest and southeast in the 90's before we settled down and had our kids. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us. As an aside you sound just like Thomas Haden Church :)
Welcome Jon! Glad you found this channel. This trip really reinforced our love for the American experience, we met so many wonderful people out there. Stay tuned for more!
Another great trail, and so much great history beside it... added to the list! Some of the best love advice, too.
Love this trail!!! Hope you get to do it someday
I've been glued to this series and I am always happy to see a new video come out. Until a few weeks ago, I had no idea you guys rode RAGBRAI and rode through Madison. I rode all of RAGBRAI and I live in Madison. I'm a little disappointed I missed you guys, hopefully someday our paths cross. Safe travels!
Bummer! Woulda been fun to have met you! Next year at RAGBRAI!
Another awesome video guys. Absolutely an inspiration. Nothing worse than that feeling of crashing your drone into a tree. Looks like you managed to get it fixed up.
I was shocked that it still worked after that mighty fall...just replaced one propeller and it's good as new!
Hah! Found Ryan after following Adam!
You ARE an artist Duzer. Your videos do the spirit good.
Thanks so much!
I don't know how old this video is, but it is a terrific presentation, a real historical documentary. I too am a car- free guy, vegetarian, and rely on your videos for inspiration, information as well as entertainment.
Your newer videos out west are a little bit dangerous, if you get hurt out there, well many of us would miss you.
I was an USAF Air Rescue HUEY crewchief out there and know how bad things can get... you gotta be more careful man.
Thanks mate.
Thanks! I loved riding the Erie Canal, so beautiful!! Happy trails, Frank
Love the screamer at 8:30 ROFL
haha, trying to add a little spunk to the videos :)
I'm all about being creative in videos but the screamer made me cry! lol. Keep it up though, your videos are awesome :)@@duzer
Super video story. I'm slightly older, but I'm planning it for the fall.
It’s a great ride, enjoy!
Hey guys - thanks for these videos - really inspiring to watch and see the good people and hear what you all have to say. It's easy to forget that the world is generally full of good people in these days of polarized news coverage. I'm in the UK, 59 years young and returned to cycling a year ago to get fit and push Type 2 Diabetes into remission. I have been following you across America through these videos and, one day, hope to take part in Ragbrai :-)
Hello Simon! Thanks for watching our adventure, we loved sharing it with the world. And yes, showing the goos side of humanity. Best of luck on kicking Diabetes Butt! Hope to see you at RAGBRAI someday
I loved this episode Ryan & Ali. I live just over the hill from Conesus Lake and your videos have revived a bicycling spark in me that I haven't had in years. I plan on hitting a lot of Rails to Trails this summer to help me lose 50 lbs or so that has accumulated over my lifetime. You and some of your fans have been an inspiration to me. I really dig your drone shots while you are pedalling along, that is some serious skill! LOL!
Love your videos, you go on some amazing adventures, thanks for letting us share them! Erie Canal makes for some great riding, glad you guys enjoyed it. Wish I had found this sooner though, I could have offered a place to crash for the night near where you stayed!
The best couple!
Awwww
In AZ Elementary school child, we sang the Erie Canal song. A videographer can be an artist that tells stories. Ali sees it. Apparently you have not biked through the Atack Geese Formation at CSU (Ft. Collins CO). Great love story for many of the near empty nest folks to consider.
I was happy to find that erie canal song, it has a nice tune. Attack Geese formation, ha!
Thanks you two!!!
I remember seeing the canal from the NY Thruway. Thinking what river is that? Then ding ding ding ding! IT'S THE ERIE CANAL! I have to try riding it some time. The D and R Canal is my favorite.
It's a great and easy ride!
Rode the entire state 5 yrs ago from Buffalo to NYC,the trip was awesome loved the Hudson valley area,I would do it again in a heartbeat.🤖📡
8:30
Thanks for that 😂
ANother awesome movie! The dynamic duo should get out on them Boulder hills for a fatbike adventure..
Great idea!
Wish I knew of your channel around the time you did this, I lived less than a half mile from the Simms store in Camillus NY, It would of been awesome to of ridden with you Ryan.
Very good!
Very,very, very,very good!!!!!
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!
Scared me when the drone crashed...I thought you had gotten hurt! I don't know you guys but have followed you from the beginning of the summer and your videos are so beautiful, fun and also informative...you rock!
Thanks Carol for following along, we appreciate it!
Sir. Right at the beginning of this video you said I'm not an artist. I say phewy . Your videos are art. Amazing art. dont stop. I've been wondering through your library and I am impressed. P.s. your additude is something to be jealous of.
Why thank you my friend, that means a lot to me. And my attitude is fueled by being outside, it truly makes me happy deep down
@@duzer I understand. I usually am happiest when I am outside doing anything.
Duzer as if I couldn’t love your videos any more! For one that scare bit in this video was HILARIOUS. But more near and dear to my heart is that you and Ali biked right through my home town, like literally past my house!
The story of Syracuse is integrally tied to the Erie Canal and with it a bit of my story too. Unfortunately, the industrial boom and urban sprawl that came with the canal would resulted in some terrible pollution of the local watershed. Growing up in Syracuse, we wouldn’t dare step a toe in Onondaga Lake for fear of growing a third eye. This legacy of environmental neglect in the face of industry lead me to study biology/environmental science.
I’ve since turned my sights towards the big blue, as I watch this from Eleuthera, Bahamas I’m defiantly missing biking those same trails!
Cheers you guys!
wow, we biked right by your house?? so cool! Good for you for studying enviro science, we need more good people like you making this world a cleaner place!
*definitely
Ryan Van Duzer couldn’t believe it, right through my old stomping grounds haha. Hope you two enjoyed that Upstate NY goodness - loving this series brother!
we loved it up there last summer!
Biking and ice cream go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Agree!
I Love Erie Canal, I live in Rochester, Ny and I ride the canal almost every day
Lucky you to have this in your backyard!
@@duzer Yeahhh, but the winter time here is really cold and I need to travel south for a nice bicycle ride and you gave me a lot of inspiration about. :)
True, south is where I head during the summer too!
Hi Ryan & Ali!
I've just discovered your channel and totaly soaked in it. Really good educational contents and I enjoy it very much. So far I watched your last year Baja Mexico trip with Mike and I follow your America trip . You're inspiration for my bike trips. I love your friendly attitude to people. Thank you guys, good luck and greetings from Poland 🚴😀, Tom
Thanks Tomek. I hope you have some amazing bike trips in the future. Happy Trails
Great video yo! I want to bike across America someday! Maybe once I resolve my health issues I can do that. Also I love the idea of bike touring as a couple. Maybe once I find love I can do that too. You’re an inspiration Ryan and Allie! Stay awesome 😎!
Awesome stuff! I'm about to do this in a week or two, all the way from Toronto to NYC, where I grew up!
You're gonna LOVE it!
One of your best videos!
Thanks!
I sure wish I had known ahead of time that you were going on the Erie canal trail. I live just up from the town you rode through in Chittenango, NY. I would have greeted you guys. Some of the sections of the Erie canal ( where you were saying you didn't know where the canal was but it was beautiful through there) are actually the old canal. A lot of areas have turned into swampy and even marshy areas. I'm currently riding sections of the canal from East Syracuse (Cuse as we call it here) and heading East. And yes, it's beautiful. I like the tunnels and stone formations from way back in the 1800's. You should bring your mom and Ali and whoever with you back here! I live in Cazenovia, NY or Caz. You're more than welcome to stay here for the night or some extended time. Yes, I've been biking for years and I love watching your vids. That's why I just got myself a new Trek 920! You guys are such an inspiration. Feel free to contact me kcbbiker2@hotmail if you're serious about coming back through here or just want to know more about it. Looking forward to the next video('s).Tell your drone " No crashies no whammies".
Awesome! Awe your poor drone! I love how you guys love to be Cozy. My hopes are you guys hold on to those little moments. They are what gets you through the normal everyday hussle of the day. We have 4 kids and sometimes, we just exist as transportation and food makers, before we fall into bed and do it all over again. It’s 100% worth it and I wouldn’t change a thing though. I’ll look back one day and miss it.
We love those simple moments...been thinking about them a lot lately, as it's cold and snowy in Boulder. I'm one of 4 kids! You have your work cut out for you
Ryan Van Duzer LoL. They’re 19, 17, 10 and 9. Been at it a little while. 😉
Nice video i have to admit i stopped watching this channel when Ryan met Ali but i think im over the heartbreak now
Awww, thanks for coming back.
We used to sing that song 15 miles on the Erie Canal... Which sounds like a day's work... Barge mule wise... 15 years makes it sound like a prison sentence... LOL
What a great trail! That forest section looked amazing!
My drone also met a tree branch once. One set of blades completely stopped, causing it to flip upside down. My eyes were the size of dinner plates, thinking I broke my brand new drone. Nope, it only dropped a couple feet before correcting itself midair, I was shocked!! Hope all is well with yours, the shots are amazing!
Drones are surprisingly tough! Thanks for following the adventure!
Thx👍🏼for another good one!
That was a fun episode. Hope the drone is ok.
Drone is A-ok!
Hey Ryan, I'm really enjoying your's and Ali's adventure across America. When this journey is over, would you go back over your route in a summary video. I have been so impressed by the various and numerous trails you two have ridden in the different states as well as the back roads with little traffic and of course the numerous towns with friendly people and food supplies. The routes across the States with Adventure Cycling Association doesn't include so many cool trails and some towns are few and far between plus they include quite a bit of hwy riding. Thanks again for the sharing this great adventure.
We'll do some sort of recap video...stay tuned!
freaked me out late night binging on your vids. and you had to put a zombie fash in. love it
haha, WATCH OUT!
I grew up 25 minutes from Chill and Grill. I love there big sizes. My parents and family are from Syracuse, NY and moved to Rochester, in the 1980s. I don't know if you eat fish, being a veggie person, but Doug's fish has the best fish sandwich, in the country.
That’s awesome!! Those were the biggest ice cream cones ever!!
@@duzer I agree and I am always full when I go there too
You guys are the best!! Keep it up!! ❤️
Thanks!
Be nice to familiarize the audience nice towns along way.
Great video on the Erie canal. Just wondering on how the two Trek bikes are holding out. This may be the Bike for me. Thanks
They've been solid! Really impressed with the Checkpoint, 3500 miles and no mechanical issues, plus it rocks on gravel!
Hi guys, nice vlog. Do you ride the same bikes? Mmmmmm ice cream over the last few months I have reverted to my childhood, I can't stop eating jelly and ice cream.
We are both riding Trek's Checkpoint bikes, mine is the Alr5, her's the is the SL 5 (ali's is better, it's carbon). Ice cream is so good after a long day!
I hope someone will pay you to give the whole US the "Erie Canal" treatment of this video. I'd watch it! Alsoooooooooo, but without the screeching demon cameos (although it was very funny)! :)
haha, sorry about the screaming daemon...just having a little fun.
Loving the history lesson guys. Pleased you flew the drone again. Not to happy with the scary face but considering you probably filmed close to Halloween I’ll let you off 👻
Not long till the end of this epic adventure 😔 take care 🍦🍦
haha, sorry about the scary face, I was just having a little fun! Stay tuned for more, final video will be out this sunday!
It's Utica near Marcy.... Often confused with Ithaca 😊
My bad!
Ha, you guys watch Netflix on your bike tours? When we're bike touring we watch Van Duzer in the evenings!!
ah cool! Glad we could entertain you in the tent with a little DuzerTV. Watching netflix was a new bike touring luxury, I kinda liked it
More inspirational stuff, Ryan and Ali! Wish we had something like that Erie Canal here in Oz. Come to think of it, I'd probably get bored with all the flat riding. Were there any hills at all?
No hills at all on the canal...it was kinda nice actually :)
I guess the obstacle avoidance was not working on the drone. That sucks
Yeah, it usually works...but not that time, yikes!
Another fantastic video, I wish I was there, note don’t eat a quart of ice cream in a middle of a long ride.🍦lol
I never learn my lesson with ice cream :)
Love your videos guys. Just one thing, at the risk of sounding like an a$$, Marcy is near Utica. You've got it as being near Ithaca. Anyway, would love to have the opportunity that you both have to tour the country on your bicycles! It's my dream. Being a native New Yorker makes me want to bike the Erie Canal trail and see what the beautiful state has to offer. Looking forward to watching your next video!
Randy ah darn!!! Utica, that’s what I meant.
3:32 Pee Wee Herman laugh made me almost snort beer out my nose.
I loved Pee Wee when I was a kid!
8:30 WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO ME!! 😂
haha, sorry!
how much of the trail is paved vs crushed stone, dirt and gravel?
mostly crushed gravel, a bit paved as well
G'day Ryan. Off topic but I was after some recommendations.
At 55.5 yrs I have (partly due to inspiration from you) started trail running. From a zero base at the beginning of the year I am now comfortably running (jiggling actually) around 6km. I was wondering if you have any recommendations on books, websites or youtube channels to support my training. Goal is to enter some event in the future.
Thanks a heap. Ian.
Hello Ian! Great to hear that you're running! This guy Sage makes tons of training content, th-cam.com/users/Vo2maxProductions
Hey Ian, welcome to the trails! My advice is to hike up as many hills as possible, it upgrades your fitness rapidly, and makes the flat stuff seem easy after a while. I used to hate hills, now I smile 😊 slower and longer beats short and fast.
By any chance did you happen to record your Erie Canal Trail on Ride GPS? I have searched high and low on that app as well as everyone else that’s done this ride on TH-cam and I cannot find a link to a recorded version. Hard to believe being as popular as the trail is.
I didn’t, I’m sorry
Another great one from my favorite channel. But you scared the crap out of me! :(
haha, sorry about that...just having a little fun with the edits. Thanks for watching!
I have a couple of questions about riding the Erie canal, what time of year did you ride it, and how was the weather? I want to start planning this trip for next year, I'm a single female and I will be 58. Do you think it's safe enough? Due to budget constraints, I will have to camp it.
We did it in mid august and it was great weather! It's SUPER safe and I think that you'd be totally fine...and probably meet some friends along the way
i’m enjoying it, cuz i wanna do it. I’m not sure what i will do to convince my girlfriend to come live the adventure with me, but i’m thinking about it.
Are there more clean water spot safe to swim?
Marcy, NY is near Utica not Ithaca
Hi every one I'm from yemen
how many more miles are you from your final destination spot?
About 250 miles
What is your average speed
Totally Depends on the terrain
@@duzer on tarmac?
Are touring bikes slow or same in flats
I love to watch your videos! =) Could you come to Europe for a tour? :D Have you been still too long already? xD
Tommi Eronen I’d love to tour in Europe someday! I wanna ride from the bottom of Sweden, to the top...in summer:)
@@duzer Awesome! :D Maybe we can meet near Tornio :D
sounds fun!
And if you have time to see my most recent video it will tell part of the story of The Amazing Adventures of Eric the fat man on a bike on the hogsback mountain
You guys are so awesome Ryan question for you you have inspired me so much that I just got done hiking a mountain called hogs back here in Klamath Falls Oregon the question is Ryan can I give a shout out to you on my TH-cam channel I just got done uploading a video of a whole lot of pictures on my TH-cam channel and later today I will be editing another video of me and my friends hiking up the mountain the hogsback you and Allie are awesome I love the videos and I look forward 2 you're next Adventure together
Awesome!! I've heard of that mountain, way to go! Shout outs are always welcome! Cheers my friend
You need a snozle bag
OMG you made me touch cloth. Great video though :-)
that can happen... :)
Duze! Great video! Btw, if cycle tourist fans are looking for more YT vids to watch, check out Codey Orgill on TH-cam. He's an Aussie just starting out on a trip around Australia. Good kid. Nice vids! (His previous trip to Japan is worth watching too). Nothing beats letting adventures pile up some, and then catching up with a few beers, lol.
I'm sure you've been asked this before, but how are you doing laundry and drying your clothes? I'd probably be flying my bike shorts like a flag to ensure I had a dry pair of shorts the next day.
Another wonderful video. One comment though, skip the singing Ryan because you can't carry a tune in a bucket.
Wait! What? I have an audition tomorrow for America's Got Talent!! :)
Remember, you are a bicycle rider, not a singer. Hahaha. What about cooking equipment? Refried beans are better warmed.
haha, I was gonna try out for American Idol...you just crushed my dreams :)
Ryan Van Duzer So sorry! But better to have your dreams crushed now than on stage in front of millions. Hahaha I've enjoyed the videos, and even the singing. 😊
Thanks buddy!
I don't understand.
Jumpscare at ~ 8:37 :(
Sorry, ha
