Argentina and their fans are too proud to be humble, and can't accept defeat well (Brazil has this problem too. Although so many questionable decision by ref in this match, German was simply better team that night.
Argentina was in full anti-football-mode this game. They just wanted to reach the penalty shootout for the third time in a row, because they knew with Goycoechea in goal they had a big chance to win it.
Imagine a Germany-Italy final in 1990.....a dream.

Caniggia was sent off for the final, Maradona played being injured the whole competition (and he kept reciving fouls) and we had to play with 10 men the last 30 minutes. What did you expect the team to do?

Everyone says Voeller dove for the penalty. A lot of people forgot Goycochea took down Augenthaler and did not get called for a penalty (which is rarely shown in short highlights). 13:06

To be fair, there should've been three penalties. I was kid back then, I watched the final but I am not sure how strict rules were but I doubt they changed it much considering penalties - so penalty on Augenthaler was clear, but also penalty for Argentina a bit later. Also, the only penalty that was called was clear.

@@Kantaroification no the penalty was not clear. Brehme, and Matthaus both saw it 2 meters away unlike codesl who was 100 meteres away both german players admitted that was not a penalty.
Argentina were really lucky reaching the final. They made it through several injuries, sent offs, some bad football, extra times and penalty shootouts. Maradona was in a horrible shape, I believe he was also injuried too, and Caniggia was the guy who scored the key goals but missed the final because he was booked with a yellow card against Italy in the semis. Germany were far more consistent through the tournament. It was a deserved win.
Thinking it took a penalty to beat this ragged Argentinian side otherwise it would have gone to penalties with Goycochea as GK.
Yeah, Maybe it was a deserved win for them, but even Argentina played badly, they should've won or at least given a chance to play extra time or penalties. Referee didn't give a clear penalty to them when Lothar Mathheus fouled an Argentine inside the box, while the referee is so near to the incident. But the penalty that Germans got, i think that is 50-50.

I have a recording of this match with German commentary. They were quite sure the penalty given was some sort of compensation for the penalty that wasn't given a few minutes earlier. And I have to agree.

Or they just swapped tactically. Matheus usually took the penalties and Goycochea knew his way of taking it. It was their element of surprise.
Matthaus when taking a penalty just closed his eyes and hammered it, usually straight down the middle, at least Brehme brought some elegance to his kicks, and also, he was the most two-footed player ever so you never knew with what foot he'd take a penalty.
I get why Argentina complained. But, there was a penalty for Germany not given. Also, during the group stage, Maradona should have been shown a red card during the second match, so most likely Argentina would be eliminated since they lost the first match against Cameroon

The worst World Cup final, not only for the drought of goals, but due lack of chances, fouls, negativity especially from Argentina, and bad refereeing.
The penalty that gave Germany the winning goal is a joke. This was a bad gift from the referee. In total Germany deserved the win, because they were the better side and tried to creat chances, and the best team in the tournament with Italy. However, the way the won was disgrace .. Penalty that wasn't. Say that, a penalty for Klinsman earlier in the second half was not counted by the referee (push by Monzon in the air) and questionable one by the Argentinian goalkeeper shortly after that was not called for (he was so close to the incident). Also a penalty for Argentina was not given against Matheus, although the referee was close to the incident too.
If Argentina didn't have 4 key players suspended, we would have seen better game for sure. Argentina came to the game with only 1 player can do something .. Injured Maradona .. Who was alone with no support and surrounded by German players. The other keys for them the goalkeeper and packed defence to prevent the Germans from scoring.
Anyways it was one of the worst World cups in recent times. Less goals, too many fouls and red cards, and defensive tactics in general (5-3-2) as well as low stadium attendance.

i agree, no contact for penalty. didnt get the ball but neither the german player. mattheus did a penalty earlier but overall the referee was just plain bad and argentina didnt have the players for the final. bad world cup. italy could have been to final so could england that lost to penalties from germany. but i believe that 3 teams didnt deliver enough to make a strong world cup. holland the euro 88 winner was a favourite, jugoslavia with all the incredible players in their youth (sadly that was the last time they played together) and ofcourse denmark the 92 euro winner. france was on a post platini transition and english players were on a 5 year ban from euro club cups so with all these i believe the big names were there but most didnt deliver...
@@taftybufty That was a dive regardless of Sensini not getting the ball. Very minimal, miniscule contact that doesn't warrant the theatrical fall. And if that was a penalty then Matheus' tackle on the other box was more obvious and more warranting of a penalty kick.

Ich war bei den drei Finals dabei und werde das nie vergessen, zumal wir spezielle Aufnahmen von den Spielern haben, die wir mit unseren SONY CAMERAS gefilmt haben. Da sind Dinge bei, die nie ein Mensch gesehen hat!!!
Wir mussten der Nationalmannschaft versprechen, diese Aufnahmen niemals zu veröffentlichen und daran halten wir uns auch.

This final saw 3 things happen for the first time. It was the first time a team failed to score a goal in a world cup final. First time a European nation defeated a South American one in a final. For the first time, a player was sent off in the final.
Firs they let Cannigia out of the final, and in the final a fake penalty, Italia gave the world cup to Germany, and Germany gave his World cup to Italy
Germany deserved, they dominated the whole game, and they were robbed for a clear penalty too. Argentina was so defensive, Germany could have scored more if they didnt waste so much chances.
Caniggia was not available for the final match. He was suspended.

A preety awful final....
Germany desperately did not want to lose in the final again after 82 and 86. They played very tight and Argentina kept it that way throughout. Many tackles, dives and play acting. As a German I was embarrassed but at the same time they played a great tourney and deserved it overall.

It seems like the Ref was looking at other place, not directly at the guy that fell. He probably believed he just fell by himself and was trying to get a penal of that. This was in the 90's, after all

You can see in the replay that the 'foul' at 16:24 didn't connect. That was classic Klinsmann diving. He was so badly 'injured' that he was back up and playing seconds later. He always did the exact same dive to with that legs going dead thing.

It is not one of the worst. Even of Argies played negative and never approached Germany's goal in 90 mins expecting penalty shootouts, Germans did create fair share of chances (like 5 clear cut goal chances) and had 23 shots, overall. Obviously, not exciting to watch one team trying to break through and play football and another one just stands behind the ball with 10 men. But worst final? No. Italy v Brazil in 1994 can be called the worst or most boring (lack of chances, no goals, very defensive from both teams). Then 2006 final can be viewed as very boring - only 2 goals and one from penalty via dive, then lack of chances and defensive football from Italians as usual. Also 2010 final can be called among the worst. Dutch played dirty and didn't play football. There was lack of chances, only one goal (also entangled in controversy over wrongly given throw in), a lot of negativity and no excitement.

Argentina lost 4 headliners and Germany have all of it. It`s a lot of advantage. Imagine the match with Caniggia, Olarticoechea, Giusti and Batista, and Germany without Klinsmann, Littbarski, Brehme and Buchwald.
Arbentina managed somehow to reach the final. They should have been kicked out earlier by Brasil or Italy. They already started weak agains Cameroon. They had definately Not deserved a title in 90!

The first Red card was poor referring and a manipulative dive by the German. Throughout this game referee looked quite biased towards Germany. Even the penalty awarded to the Germans was not justified. On the other hand, a clear penalty was not awarded to Argentines.
