I always 100% consider this a Christmas movie that is until I heard a good theory for why it's not. This person speculated that movies like this and Gremlins and Lethal Weapon are not Christmas movies because Christmas doesn't have anything to do with the movie is just the backdrop. I never thought of it like that before. This person to find a Christmas movie as a movie where Christmas is a key aspect of the movie whether it's a movie about people dealing with Christmas or a movie where Santa or his elves or the Christmas spirit or something like that is included. While the movies I listed have Christmas in the background in none of them is Christmas a major factor. And the fact that some of these movies were released in the spring and summer. But I still think of all of them as Christmas movies but I get now when somebody says they don't think it is

Yeah, I would agree with that. I’d maybe class it as a Christmas themed action movie (probably should have said that in the review haha). Thanks for watching and for the comment, and merry Christmas.

I wouldn't watch it in the summer cos it reminds me of Christmas given it's setting. So yes it's a Christmas film. Plus my local cinema brought it back for the festive period alongside other Crimbo films.
    So yes it is essentially.

Depends on what your definition of what a Christmas movie is. I know what mine is and this will never be a Christmas movie. 🎄 Although it’s a fun movie to play during the season. It takes place during that timeframe but the story is not a Christmas story thus not a Christmas movie.

Yes, it’s all dependant upon your interpretation of a Christmas movie. For me personally, I think of it as a Christmas film but that’s my own interpretation.
You are correct though as the story itself could take place at any time of year, it just so happens to take place at Christmas. It’s interesting to see other people’s interpretations.
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Colm.

I was gonna say being released during the summer of 88 kills the Christmas argument but you also make good points. No not a Christmas movie.

Not a christmas movie. It was released in the summer of 1988 as a summer blockbuster. so nah, no Christmas movie.
Why is it people debate this as a Christmas movie but not Die Hard 2? It had a Christmas theme and it too came out in the summer of 1990.

Interesting revelation that _Nothing Lasts Forever,_ the novel this was based on is set during Christmas. On the other hand, considering at the plot at its basic level, *there is no reason* to set it during Christmas. Hell, most of the staff could be absent because it's the Fourth of July or even Thanksgiving, and McClain and the Bad Guys just happen to arrive for different reasons than the holiday. Would that make it a Fourth of July or Thanksgiving movie if that had been the time of the even? Of course not. The time-setting of the story is not intrinsically related to the plot. Ergo, it is not a Christmas movie.

That’s a great point. The producers were keen to maintain the Christmas setting from the book, but as I said in the review, the writers could have written the plot to be at any time of year that coincides with a nation or international holiday, as you say.
If it was set on St Patrick’s day, for example, and the backdrop of the film was st Patrick’s day themed with Irish music in the score etc etc, would it not be considered a st Patrick’s day ‘themed’ action film? Although, the plot can be interchangeable with the time of year and the plot beats wouldn’t really change.
For me, I like to think of it as a Christmas themed action film purely because it’s set at Christmas and it’s a great excuse to watch it with my wife at this time of year (although you don’t need an excuse to watch Die Hard) so it is interesting to read people’s opinion on this, although your comment has convinced Sean that it’s not a Christmas movie.
Thank you for watching the review and for your comment, it’s much appreciated. Colm.

@@CriticalCinemaClub And thank you, CCC, for your response. I have a friend who is a diehard fan of this being a Christmas movie, and keeps saying he has proof (more proof, I suppose, not revealed🙄) to refute my essential argument about the timing of the holiday chosen for the story. I can also enjoy it as a holiday/Christmas movie. However, considering what the hell happens in it, that really does work against the Christmas spirit. In contrast, _Three Godfathers_ IS a Christmas movie, and there's hardly anything to do with Christmas in it except the timing when John Wayne's character arrives in town with the baby. Ain't it fun to argue over subjective issues at Christmas?😆😉

It's a Christmas movie because it's got Christmas music, takes place on Christmas and features Christmas decorations. If you disagree with this let me ask you, "How is Diehard NOT a Christmas film, yet The Sound of Music IS??? How?" While Sound of Music is widely considered a "Seasonal Classic" it actually has NOTHING to do with Christmas! It doesn't take place on Christmas and despite the song "My Favorite Things" often a staple of Carolers, it doesn't mention Christmas, nor anything winter-related.
So Diehard is not accepted as a Christmas film because it's an Action movie? Maybe because the Seasonal references take a back seat to the adrenaline-fueled action and its R-rating might not be for "family viewing". Still, shouldn't a "Christmas" movie actually feature CHRISTMAS in the film?

    • @CriticalCinemaClub
      @CriticalCinemaClub  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You make some excellent points there. I think of Die Hard as a Christmas movie (as I mentioned, my wife and I watch it together every year in the run up to Christmas) but it’s interesting to know what others think.
The Sound of Music is always on TV around Christmas time and I have family members who love watching it at Xmas but there are no Christmassy scenes in the film at all!
I did actually record a small bit about the musical score and that Michael Kamen included sleigh bells into the score. I probably should have kept that bit in because it does add to the ‘Christmassy-ness’ of the film. The section didn’t flow too well and I ran out of time in the end so omitted it.
Thank you for watching the review and a massive thanks for the comment. Colm

Its not a Christmas movie because it came out in the summer of 1988. How many Christmas movies come out during the summer? What because it has Christmas themes? well is Die Hard 2 also a Christmas movie because it too has a Christmas theme and it too came out during the summer of 1990.

Why would Home Alone be a Christmas film when it's just about a kid getting left at home whilst being robbed? Cos its set at Xmas and features Xmas songs/decorations and mood. Same as Die Hard.
