  • In 2020 Kernow Model Rail Centre had a special offer on their 4TC sets made by Bachamnn, despite being ‘quite a price’ still, I was very tempted and purchased one.
    As you can see here the model is exquisite and fully captures the look and feel of these units. #modelrailways #modelrailroad #modeltrains

    I used to love the breakfastt in the REP, smoked haddock and poached eggs, kippers, or full English, sublime, those REPs were rockets.

    The 4REP units were 3,200hp (not 2,200hp as stated) as each power car used the same electric equipment and bogie design of a Class 73/1 (1600hp) design electro-diesel locomotive. As a result the 4REP "Power Packs" were the only "units" actually designated as locomotives, and as a result limited to 60mph if travelling alone. At 3,200hp (8 x 400hp motors) they were the worlds most powerful 3rd rail electric units to date.
    When the 4REP units were withdrawn some of the equipment from each of their power cars was used in the construction of the 5WES (Plastic Pigs) which were rated at 1600hp per 5 car unit. The EPB brake equipment and the 4 x 400hp motors of a 4REP power car went into a new 5WES. I know I was a BR Driver who drove all these types and others.

      Hi James, you are quite right, I said HP instead of KW which is what I was referring to. Like you I was a BR driver with 51s as my basic then all other EMUs there after apart from the REPs

    Most informative as usual. Thank you.

    The detail had already impressed me, but the lights really seal the deal on these coaches! It looks quite good with those older locos, something about the BR blue on the more recent diesels doesn't seem quite as nice as on the old Lima ones, though I can't pinpoint why.

      Well said! the old Lima locos look and run great and I agree with you. Glad you liked this, will you be getting a TC then?

      @@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Even with the trend towards extremely detailed ready to run models, it is great to see how well a lot of the older stock integrates with them, especially at any reasonable distance, or with additional things like crew, paint touchups, and so on.
      They're a very nice unit, though my current focus tends towards Victorian stuff, probably not helped by the great price of the new Hornby A1 Terrier tank loco - Just wish more similarly well made US 19th century locos were available at such an astonishing value!

      @@RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS Agree again, yes the Terriers seem lovely, I am trying hard to resist two more of them!

      @@ModelRailwaysUnlimited What really struck me with them is how well done the cab interiors are - I visited Bluebell and was immediately struck by just how compact Stepney's cab was. The fact that they could fit anything on the model version really did complete the whole package.

    Super-interesting as ever, Mike! Although I grew up on CEPs and VEPs, and later on refurbished CIGs when they moved to the Dover Ramsgate Line. Cheers!

      Hi Andrew, I don't think I ever moved a TC on my own, did as a 2nd man, but did have the honor of taking a displaced 4 REP from Fratton to Wimbledon after a bad winter, my word did it fly. Not sure the ECO approved lol

    The coaches look very realistic with the lighting. What amazes me is England had so many classes of diesels, for all different purposes I suppose. Our diesels out here were mainly co co's in the US style. Seen one you seen them all. Thanks Mike for the vid.

      Cheers Steven most kind of you, yes indeed we do have or did have a large number of different locos, and very glad I am lol

    Superb Mike, I was not aware of these workings beyond Bournemouth. Finally some lighting that looks realistic. I remember many a night making my way home in the yellow light of Mk 1 coaches. I noticed that your Cl.37 is missing half of it's snow plough, probably not going to need it on Bournemouth services in August though. lol.
    Regards, David.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Indeed the atmosphere of the old incandescent bulb was lovely. Ah yes the snow ploughs are a poor fit and drop off lol all the best David, Mike

    I don't recall seeing these when I was travelling between Pompey and Waterloo, or Petersfield - Pompey. I do recall the green third-rail sparkie things, no idea what the class was, as in those days I had no interest in such details - just where it was going, and how soon I could get there!

    Thank you for this video, It was great to hear that these would sometimes run from Portsmouth! (as my layout is very loosely based on there) would you be able to provide me with some more information about how these ran from Portsmouth if possible please? thank you once again for the video

      Hi and thanks for watching. The 4TC sets ran an hourly service to Reading on Sundays. Giving the 3Hs a rest. You'd also get occasional diversions as well. Headcode was 80.

    So am i right in thinking, the 4tc was eletric powered mostly and then only pulled by 33s beyond bournemouth. and the bachmann model is it powered?

    • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited
      @ModelRailwaysUnlimited  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, no the TC was totally un-powered. It needed to be connected to a loco or REP unit to power its lighting and auxiliaries. The model has no motor, but picks up for lighting.

    What other units can it run with? A MLV?

    • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited
      @ModelRailwaysUnlimited  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, The TCs were designed to run with the 4REP traction units, however they also worked with Southern Region locos. They could be pulled by any loco however the ETH could not then be used

    I think BR was lazy so they decided: screw it, we make this 4tc instead of doing London to Weymouth electrification. We’re they in debt?

    • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited
      @ModelRailwaysUnlimited  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, you are not far wrong. They were screwed down by the government but approval for electrification was not forthcoming as well.
