Only in Korea can a judge deny a divorce as if keeping people together would actually work and fix problems. The only way it came to court is the wife also signed the papers. After that its supposed to be a done deal, after all it means both have agreed to not be together. Court should only help divide assets etc. but in Korea a judge can tell both of them, NO you have to stay married! 1st world economy with 3rd world primitive society.

It's not just in Korea. And to the person babbling about women's rights, Korea had a female president in 2012 before 98% of "feminist countries". Korean women themselves have an issue with western feminism which is why it didn't take over, yet they had a woman running the whole nation 10 years ago, so the men have no problem with powerful women, and the korean recipe must be working 🙄 and if you guys think the bulk of people including netizens bashing and trashing her are not the women, you are delusional. I’ve seen children suffer because their parents stayed together for the family. It didn’t work and it never does, it really messed them up mentally. Infidelity in a relationship is devastating especially when you have children but to hold on to a loveless marriage makes no sense. Refusing to sign divorce papers is hurting the wife, more than him.

So true, they've stated some facts wrongly. This cheating man she is having an affair with keep casting her in his own movies and she had acted in others too. They even got an award for a movie they did together this year iirc or maybe it was last year. This actress is living comfortably and well-off doing what she loves. There was a period when she lost many deals so the director (her lover) stepped in to help her cutting his own daughter's education fee or something. I don't why they're sympathising with both of them. Living and loving a person your half of the life and then getting 'discarded', you live brokenheart and spend your rest of the (old) age in tears while the cheaters get to enjoy their life, so unfair.
Very sad how the Korean entertainment industry really punish the women and put them in very high expectations even when these are events in their personal lives. He filed for divorce in 2016. Denied by the courts. No one knows what two people go through and it shouldn't influence their careers. Work and personal home life needs to be separated in their judgements of people.
As a Korean I also feel that netizens need to be more generous about outside-work stuff. I think it has to do a lot with Confucianism and people want public figures to follow ethics and be good role models for viewers (especially young). If they commit something immoral (DUI, cheating, etc.) people generally think it's unfair for unethical people to be so successful. In a way, they believe the same opportunity should rather go to someone more ethical. Hence, why netizens fall in love with genuinely pure and nice celebrities. I think to a certain extent, this makes a lot of sense. But I agree that netizens sometimes take this too far. Korean society can def benefit from more flexibility when it comes to celebrities and ethics
this is the problem with people talking about other countries you don't understand the cultural implications and reasonings for the law. They had to deny his divorce because it wasn't in good faith, if the person in power cheats, divorces, is able to keep most of his assets, it takes away the power, money and land of the "poorer spouse", by denying his divorce they're actually helping his wife and countless other powerless spouses because they would lose those assets. LOL
A normal guy marrys normal girl, the guy becomes rich due to his job, assets have to be split normally, however in this case rich guy marrys normal girl, raise kids, have a family, cheats on wife, files for divorce, gets divorce, assets aren't split equally. Marriage is a legally binding contract that means you’re telling the government that you want this person to be legally recognized as family since you don’t get to choose your family but get to choose your spouse. Love maybe A REASON to get married though most often love is NOT the only reason to stay married. Marriage is a choice.

Min Hee had a STELLAR career ahead of her. After watching The Handmaiden, which was a huge success internationally, I thought this would be beginning of great things for her but "love" just tore it apart. I'm not justifying her actions, nor I condone it, but I sincerely hope this issue dies down eventually so she could make an awesome comeback. However, people keep forgetting that South Korea is quite traditional still.

I find Korean justice system odd, I’ve never heard a judge deny a divorce petition. I guess only in SK that happens.

My friend said that in Australia, you have to wait a year or have to file and have separation for a year before divorce can be considered/finalized. That is so different.

The Handmaiden is my favorite film of all time and her performance in Alone at the Beach is truly one for the history books. The fact that she was blacklisted, to me, is an act of misogyny. Well that the punishment for him, so he can not live peacefully for the rest of his life. I witnessed cheated man having 2 mistress but the wife didn't divorce him, then in his old age the man got chronicle illness (cancer) and want to go back to his 1st wife and be treated by her. His 1st wife already forgave him but don't want to care about him. Meanwhile the mistress also don't want to take care of him too. In the end he died alone in hospital without anyone care for him, even his kids from his wife and mistress only care about their Dad money, none of them cry in his burial ceremony, they're fighting for the inheritance instead.
It's unfortunate that in Korea, you are always being judged by everything. Your physical appearance, what you do including things you done in the past, where you go, etc. Any controversy or scandal you get into can ruin your career forever.

The way people react to cheating scandals is so over the top. It's terrible to cheat or to get involved with a married person but there are far worse things a person can do. This scandal should have died out after some time and allowed her to be able to rebuild her career instead of completely destroying her. Meanwhile, he's suffered no consequences even though he is the most to blame since he was the married one.

This situation reminds me of a similar thing that recently became big news in the western entertainment world (Ned Fulmer, ex-CEO of the Try Guys).
It's so interesting to me how this clearly shows the stark contrast in thinking there is for the west and the east.
For people who aren't aware of what happened, basically Ned Fulmer cheated on his wife his an employee at the company he was formerly the CEO of. Therefore, the general public opinion about this is, that although the relationship was consensual, there was a power imbalance to begin with, so the "consensual" aspect is irrelevant. And also, since Ned had built his public image around being "the wife guy", always bringing her and their children up, he messed that up and lost the public's trust, basically.
In the end, though both Ned and his mistress were in the wrong, the judgment was heavier on Ned. She did of course receive a lot of hate too, but people understand all of the previously stated reasons, and therefore she is seen as the lesser culprit, in a way.
However, from what I see in this case, people aren't even bringing that point up. They are simply too blind by their patriarchal views of how society is supposed to be, at large but also in the sense of the ideal family structure, to be able to see how in this case too, there is a power imbalance. Kim Minhee met him while at work, and him being a director already makes him a superior. I am not saying this is the case, but hypothetically, if this affair wasn't consensual both ways and Minhee didn't want to accept the director's advances, she could be fired from the project and that could lead to her not being able of getting other projects.

I don't know... moral of the story is though, just don't cheat. Personally, I am polyamorous, and I am this way specifically because I don't ever want to face a situation where I am "tempted" to cheat, I'd rather choose the option of having free will to tell my partner from the get go that I could fall for someone else too, and that doesn't mean I stop loving them and caring either. So yeah, if you know you could possibly feel love for more than one person at once, at least consider being honest about it.

Reading the comments and seeing how Western people approach cheating and having an affair, remind me why I and many of my friends don't see their movies anymore. I'm not an east asian and I'm not a religious person but believe it or not some societies and people do not approach cheating like them and most importantly their approach and opinion on having an affair is not standard for many people. I'm just thankful that drama exists so we can relate to their culture and standards.
